Abstract

Sculpture is an iconic sign to convey a message or something that can be used to represent a state (context), events of the past, or those in the future. Sculpture consists of iconic signs that work together systemically to achieve certain goals. This study aims to (1) describe the meaning of denotation, and (2) interpret the connotative meaning of Anusapati’s work entitled “Bunga di Atas Batu” (Flower on a Stone), a bronze statue created in 2004, by employing the connotative semiotics approach of Roland Barthes. The sculpture portrays a monument, which invites everyone to see that ‘flower’ as the connotation of the forest has been elevated, not to be given a respectable position, but just to be remembered. Forests as valuable assets owned by the Indonesians and even the world are seen metaphorically as ‘the flower’ which is gradually disappearing, (almost) becoming a memory. In some areas in Indonesia, forests have even completely disappeared and only left memories behind

Abstract

IMPRESSIVE PENETRATION OF GENDER HABITUS IN AYAO WONIWON, TRADITIONAL PROVERBS OF YAPEN PEOPLE IN SERUI TOWN PAPUA Abstract: Penetration of gender habitus in Ayao Woniwon, Traditional expressions of the Yapen people is carried out through cultural objects. The penetration is impressive which gives suggestions to men and women so that they perceive differences in behavior not as a cultural construction, but as something natural and legitimate. This study used qualitative data. Data collected in the form of symbols of cultural objects that are reflected in the sentence Ayao Woniwon. It was collected by using the technique of observation and deep interview from Yapen people who live in Serui city and its surroundings. The holistic approach was adopted by combining cultural study (form and content model) and literary study (semiotic approach and feminist literary criticism).  The researcher found that Ayao Woniwon was created (anonymous) to protect males' roles that were symbolized by Kavi (loincloth), Yawainye (torch),  Ayume (sail),  Umbaio (wooden fork), and  Epane (Nibong floor) and position of females on private-domestic work that was symbolized by Keepo Anane  (papeda chopstick), Tewami (fireplace), and  Ingkuja (Noken ).The impressive penetration of gender habitus into Ayao Woniwon through these symbols causes gender disposition systems not to be eroded by time but continues to be inherited in the Yapen community. Keywords: Penetration-impressive, Gender habitus, Traditional proverbs, Yapen.PENETRASI IMPRESIF HABITUS GENDER PADA AYAO WONIWON, UNGKAPAN TRADISIONAL MASYARAKAT YAPEN DI KOTA SERUI PAPUAAbstrak: Penetrasi habitus gender pada ayao woniwon, ungkapan tradisional masyarakat Yapen dilakukan melalui benda-benda budaya. Abstract

Up to now, Balinese culture and art cannot be separated from the utiliza- tion of old Chinese coins which local people in Bali call pis bolong. The use of those old Chinese coins in traditional ritual in Bali is found even from the infants until the end of that person’s life at cremation ceremony. The cremation ceremony uses the Chinese old coins to be burned with the deceased and to be sent with the ash from the burned deceased into the sea. This practice makes the number of old Chinese coins decrease meanwhile the demand of using the coins increase. The condition is worsened by the practice of using old Chinese coins as souvenirs. The local metal craftsmen have tried to solve the scarcity of the coins by producing a local-made Chinese coins and making them as similar as the original Chinese coins. However, due to the lack of local craftsmen’s aesthetics assessment visually and non-visually on old Chinese coins, their physical appearances were very much different from its original Chinese coins. Therefore, this paper presents the result of the observation of aesthetics  assessment  visually and non-visually on old Chinese coins that can be used as guidance to produce local-made old Chinese coins as similar as its original.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the semantic construction in Indone- sian language by pre-school-age children. The present research consisted of a longi- tudinal study of five pre-school-age  children. The study of these five children is based  on the developmental  psycholinguistic  and semantic-pragmatic  studies.  To collect the data, we used the observation, recording, and interview technique. The results show that the semantic construction of word meaning in Indonesian language by pre-school-age children consisted of: (1) over-specification,  (2) overgeneraliza- tion, (3) intersection, (4) towards meaning spesification,  and (5) meaning associa- tion. Overgeneralization and intersection dominated language development by child- ren in 2 until 4 year olds, even though since 4 year old those indications are decreas- ing

Abstract

The old Javanese language (OJL) is a language with rich morphemes that form words. This implicates the syntactic process in the language. One example of a syntactic alternation is a causative. Causative is a valence-raising mechanism in the structure of a clause. This study aims to describe the formal causative in OJL. Causative in OJL is morphologically marked on the verb. Causative verbs can be formed from non-causative ones, such as adjectives and basic verbs. In OJL there are three types of causative: morphological, lexical and analytic causative. Morphological causative is formed by affixes like mang- / ng+-i , paha-+-in-, -um-+-akên (a), infix - um-, and -in- / -an, -in- ( in the passive voice). Lexical causative is the basic form which has a causative meaning. Analytic causative is formed by adding a verb form gawe, matangyan, and hetu. Intransitive verb clause is diathesis patientive. The transitive verb clause has two macro roles, namely actor and undergoer. When the two macro situations are merged into a single macro situation, the particles are connected by conjunctions: sawet, matangyan, apan, and karana

Abstract

Foreign language attitude plays a significant role in enhancing ones’ motivation to learn a particular foreign language. This study aims to obtain an understanding  of Indonesian students’ attitude towards Japanese language.  The  data  were  collected  from  160  students  learning  Japanese. Foreign language attitude questionnaire (FLAQ) originally developed by Pierson et al. (1980) was used in this study. Further, attitude factors identified by Pennington and Yu (1994) following the result of FLAQ factor analysis was also incorporated in the current research. It is evident in this study that the majority of students showed positive attitude towards Japanese language. That is, they showed no negative orientation towards this foreign language and culture. The study also observed no significant differences in attitude towards Japanese language between male and female students (p>.05). Both males and females responded positively on their Japanese language learning and use.
