Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out how Sahabat Lintas Iman (SALIM) organizes activities containing the value of religious moderation, analyzed using Anthony Giddens' theory regarding social movements. By using this sociological approach, the author tries to reveal the facts in the field regarding the socialization of religious moderation to the young generation of Bandung. The method used is descriptive by presenting the social phenomena obtained in narrative form. The type of data in this research is qualitative, equipped with data collection techniques through observation and interviews. In the research, data was found regarding the socialization of religious moderation carried out by the SALIM community to the young generation of Bandung. Researchers found three activities that have religious moderation values, namely: First, religious cafes are a place that combines enthusiastic young people with the experience of wise parents. Not just a meeting, but also an encounter that builds mutual understanding that inspires new perspectives. Second, the tour of places of worship is one of SALIM Bandung's programs in socializing religious moderation to the young generation of Bandung. The activities take place when one religion is celebrating its religious holiday. Third, the Interfaith Friends Meeting (PASINI) is a meeting between religious followers, without feeling low or high and without any secret agenda or goals.

Abstract

The relevance of how the Al-Qur’an is interpreted in the modern day is explicitly covered in this essay. This approach’s primary goal is to investigate the meaning and historical relevance of the verses under interpretation and then transform that historical significance into dynamic significance. The following procedures are used to determine historical meaning and significance: (a) textual analysis, (b) intratextuality, (c) intertextuality, (d) examination of the historical setting in which the verse was revealed, and (e) reconstruction of the verse’s major meaning. To determine the verse’s dynamic significance, the following procedures are followed: (a) classifying the verse, (b) contextualizing and re-actualizing the verse’s significance, (c) identifying the verse’s symbolic meaning, and (d) fortifying the verse’s construction with knowledge to assist others. It is impossible to divorce the research methodology employed in this study from the realization of the ma’na-cum-maghza approach’s urgency. Because content analysis is used in this study, Sahiron’s work in applying the ma’na-cum-maghza methodology to QS Al-Maidah (5): 51 may be thoroughly examined. Similarly, the qualitative method used in this study can interpret ma’na-cum-maghza in the context of today, particularly in light of modern interpretations, which are supported by information the author gathered from books, documents, journals, and notes. Some observations about Ma’na-cum-Maghza. The author explains the connecting bridge as an explanation of ma’na-cum-maghza by utilizing source triangulation to find the validity of the data and sample Q 5:51, which Sahiron interpreted. This produces research that is compatible with the disclosure of the urgency of ma’na-cum-maghza.

Abstract

This scholarly analysis critically assesses the literary work, “The Conclusive Argument From God: Hujjat Allah al-Baligha,” by Shah Wali Allah al-Dihlawi. Dihlawi’s Hujjat Allah al-Balighah delved into the intricacies of Sharia by unveiling its underlying principles and exploring its various branches. While grounded in Sharia’s esoteric dimensions, the work seamlessly integrates Hadith, Fiqh, ethical teachings, Sufism, and even philosophical elements. Drawing upon his expertise in descriptive and epistemological disciplines, Dihlawi navigated these mysteries with an unwavering commitment to knowledge. Remarkably, he identified the scientific justification for each Quranic and Prophetic mandate, bridging the gap between revelation and reason. Furthermore, he eloquently emphasized the importance of Sufism and spirituality within the Islamic context. Hujjat Allah al-Balighah illuminated the relevance and interconnectivity of the four primary Sunni schools of thought, highlighting their joint base in Islamic law and tradition.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the symbols of slavery in the Qur'an, the semiotic perspective of Roland Barthes and its relation to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This study uses qualitative descriptive methods and approaches with the analysis of Roland Barthes' semiotic theory that a symbol is a sign that is surrounded by other signs so that it becomes clearer. There are two stages: the first stage is called the linguistic system, and the second stage is called the mythical system. Myth, in Barthes' view, is assumed to be a system of markers built on three things signifier, signified and sign. The results of the study show that the symbol of Abdun and Amah as human beings who have rights and obligations, the symbol of Raqabah is a valuable item that must be paid, in the sense that it must be liberated or liberated and the symbol of Ma Malakat Ayman as a halal biological channel, a companion who is allowed to marry, and a human being who has rights. As for the relationship with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the two have the same spirit to abolish and eliminate slavery on the face of the earth.

Abstract

This study explores the role of the Bai'at Santri at the Islamic Boarding School (Pesantren) of Pangalengan in strengthening religious moderation among students. To achieve these objectives, the research employs a qualitative method with a positivist approach, enabling an in-depth exploration of data within its natural context. Data were collected through triangulation techniques, and the analysis was conducted qualitatively using an inductive approach based on existing facts. The findings indicate that the Bai'at Santri at the pesantren is not an extremist ritual, but rather a pledge by students to adhere to the pesantren's rules and respect the values of Islamic moderation. This activity supports the indicators of religious moderation developed by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs, such as national commitment, tolerance, non-violence, and accommodation of local culture. Through Bai'at Santri, students are expected to develop moderate attitudes, which include understanding differences, applying just laws, and utilizing science and technology to solve problems. This study concludes that Bai'at Santri is proven to be an effective strategy in strengthening religious moderation at PPI 259. This activity not only fosters tolerance among students but also reinforces the integration of moderation values into daily life at the pesantren. Future research is recommended to explore the long-term impact of Bai'at Santri on the surrounding community and to analyze factors that can enhance the effectiveness of religious moderation programs at other pesantren. Additionally, the perspectives of students and alumni should be considered to gain deeper insights into the influence of Bai'at Santri on their attitudes and behaviors after leaving the pesantren.

Abstract

This study examines and highlights the relevance of Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum in addressing injustice within the context of environmental degradation. The researcher argues that these documents provide profound moral perspectives that frame environmental issues not merely as ecological challenges but as manifestations of injustice affecting humanity as a whole. A qualitative approach was employed, combining descriptive qualitative and comparative methods. The study involves an in-depth exploration of Pope Francis's thoughts on justice in Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum, utilizing literature reviews of Church documents and the Pope's personal history. The findings reveal that Pope Francis integrates social and ecological justice within a framework of integral ecology, emphasizing the interconnectedness of humanity and creation. Drawing from John Rawls's distributive justice and Brian Baxter's ecological justice theories, the study explores how these perspectives are reflected in the papal encyclicals. While Rawls focuses on the fair distribution of rights and duties within social institutions, Baxter extends justice to non-human entities. Pope Francis synthesizes these ideas, advocating for social inclusion and ecological stewardship as responses to exploitation and inequality. The study underscores the holistic approach of Pope Francis, where justice encompasses the dignity of the marginalized and the protection of the environment. His teachings challenge technocratic paradigms and call for collective responsibility to create a more just and sustainable world. By bridging social and ecological concerns, Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum offer critical insights for addressing environmental degradation as an issue of moral and social justice.

Abstract

Persis (Persatuan Islam –Islamic Union) is one of the Islamic organizations in Indonesia that has made a significant contribution to the development of education since it was founded in 1923. This article aims to analyze the role of Persis in building an education system based on Islamic values, starting from the colonial era and the independence to the current modern era. Using a historical and qualitative-descriptive approach, this research examines the educational strategies, challenges and innovations carried out by Persis through madrasas, Islamic boarding schools and formal educational institutions. The findings show that Persis is consistent in fighting for education based on pure Islamic beliefs, both through curriculum formation, teacher training and the development of educational institutions. In the reform and digital era, Persis continues to adapt to technology and global needs to ensure the relevance of Islamic education in producing a generation with noble character and high competence. This research confirms that the role of Persis education does not only cover the Islamic realm but also contributes to Indonesia's national development. Contribution: By promoting character education through various community initiatives, including social media outreach, Persis demonstrates its commitment to fostering a generation that embodies noble values while being equipped for modern societal roles.

Abstract

This study examines the characteristics of Generation Z as digital natives along with their implications for character education. This study is important to carry out considering that each generation has its own characteristics that distinguish it from other generations, especially in the education process. The research method used in this study is a literature study with the stages of reviewing, collecting, and analyzing these references. The results of this study indicate that Generation Z has a variety of uniqueness compared to other generations. The most prominent uniqueness of this generation is their ability and habits in using technology. In addition, this generation is also known as a generation that is more creative and innovative, has social responsibility, is active, likes to seek comfort, prioritizes security, is easy to connect with each other, and other characteristics. The uniqueness of Generation Z brings changes to various aspects of life, including the character education process. The character education process is considered still very necessary for this generation. Character education for this generation can be carried out through the family environment, school environment, and community environment. Character education in the family environment emphasizes more on the use of good approaches and the creation of a harmonious family environment. Meanwhile, education in the school environment for Generation Z can be implemented by choosing a variety of strategies, approaches, and learning models that are right for this generation. As for character education through the current community environment, it can be done by creating religious character posts that are uploaded to the internet via social media. This study recommends that subsequent researchers conduct character education experiments in the school, family, or community environment. Contribution: By identifying the characteristics of Generation Z, the research highlights the need for educational approaches that cater to their specific needs. This includes adapting teaching methods to incorporate technology and interactive learning experiences that resonate with their digital upbringing.

Abstract

Religious absolutism is one of the epistemological roots behind various acts of religious intolerance that threaten the order of life in a plural, dynamic, tolerant and inclusive democratic society. This research is a study of philosophical literature that explores the ideas of William James's pragmatic theory of truth and finds its relevance to religious education in order to anticipate symptoms of religious absolutism. James challenged the absolutism of truth that had been maintained for centuries in the Western philosophical tradition. Truth does not lie in ideas or notions, but rather in the process or event of verification and validation of those ideas or notions in experience. He offers a pragmatic concept of truth that takes into account the practical consequences of ideas in experience. For him, truth should be dynamic, open, continuously growing and plural. Inspired by James' ideas, the author conveys the importance of religious truth and religious education interpreted in a more pragmatic framework. Religious truth is not only built from religious dogma or doctrine but is a reflective and dialogical process through the experience of faith, which is formed in relation to other truths. In a contemporary pluralistic society, religious education cannot be reduced to simply teaching religious doctrine or dogma. Religious education needs to be carried out within a pragmatic framework as a form of religious moderation education that pays attention to efforts to develop critical-reflective abilities to grow faith in a sustainable manner, creatively interpreting human experience, as well as forming human ethical character to maintain a harmonious life together.

Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions of tolerance held by students at UIN Bandung and Parahyangan Catholic University (UNPAR), two religiously affiliated postsecondary educational establishments in Bandung. The data for this research was gathered through document reviews and interviews using a qualitative methodology. Fifty students from UIN Bandung and fifty from UNPAR Bandung were interviewed. This study discovers that students' perceptions of their religious texts—the Bible and the Qur'an—have an impact on how tolerant they are Socially, it is discovered that Indonesians' conception of tolerance has a national dimension based on the national ideology. Religious and social concepts provide these kids with the foundation for tolerance in a variety of ways. Students at UIN Bandung continue to exhibit tolerance, but only within the framework of their religion—Islam. On the other hand, tolerance is practiced in both the social and individual environments at UNPAR, a campus that is more diverse and cosmopolitan. Collaboration strengthens the two student groups' tolerant attitudes. This collaboration later initiated the birth of the Halaqah Damai (Circle of Peace) as a forum for the two student groups to have dialogue and understand the essence of religious tolerance to be disseminated in their respective environments.
