Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of using the Direct Listening Thinking Activity (DLTA) learning strategy in improving the listening skills of eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Eris. Direct Listening Thinking Activity (DLTA) is a learning strategy to improve students' understanding of the material being listened to. This study is pre-experimental design used quantitave research in one group pre-test and post-test. The subjects were 22 sttudents of eigth grade. The data were collected by using matchmaking questions wich the sampling students answer the question according to the instruction given by researcher. The result of this study indicates that the mean score of post-test was higer than pre-test. It can proof that the DLTA strategy can improve students listening skill.

Abstract

This research was proved whether the use of Pictionary games in teaching vocabulary can improve students’ vocabulary mastery or not. This research used the quantitative method with the pre-experimental design, one group pre-test and post-test design. Pre-test (T1) is given to the students before treatment and post-test (T2) is given after treatment. This research was conducted SMP Negeri 8 Satap Tondano especially 7th grade students. There were three classes of the first level students, and the researcher will take one class only and it will be chosen as the subject of study with the total number of participants 23 students. Based on the findings, it could be concluded that the use of Pictionary as the learning method to improve students’ vocabulary mastery is an effective way to solve students’ lack in vocabulary mastery, especially the understanding of the meaning of each English word. The result showed the score in the post-test is significantly higher than pre-test. Most of the students found the effectiveness of this method in their English learning activity such as reading, speaking, and listening. The following suggestions are regarded as important to be considered by English teachers concerning the way of teaching vocabulary: 1) English teachers at junior high school are suggested to apply Pictionary games to help the students in learning vocabulary. 2) The teachers must control the students in groups to make them active and initiative. 3) Teachers must be creative to find out teaching technique that could improve students’ mastery in Vocabulary.

Abstract

The present study tries to find out how students’ reading behavior in this digital era, especially during Covid 19 pandemic by assessing SMA students’ preference for online materials, their preferred language when reading online materials, the online reading habits of the students, and the amount of time they spend in reading online every day. The study was a survey that involved 44 tenth graders at SMA Negeri 1 Tabukan Utara in Likungan, Sangihe. The data were collected using a questionnaire adapted from Abidin, Pour-Mohammadi, & Jesmin (2011). The data collected were analyzed in percentages. Results of the analysis indicated that (1) the most common activities they are interested in are chatting, surfing the internet, and games, (2) concerning online reading materials, they prefer reading e-books, e-mail, stories, or novels, and comic strips/jokes. The majority of the respondents 89% prefer reading online reading materials in Indonesia, and (3) male respondents read more news, e-mails, and comic strips/jokes. Female respondents, on the other hand, preferred reading e-magazines, e-books, and movie reviews, and (4) the highest percentage of respondents (43%) spent 1-3 hours online daily reading. It is concluded that female respondents spent more time on online reading compared to their male counterparts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the students' perception toward teachers’ role in motivating students to learn English during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this research, researchers use the qualitative method. To collect the data, the researchers used a questionnaire that consists of 10 questions. The population of this study is the students at SMP Negeri 2 Tondano and the samples are the 8th grade students with a total of 23 students. The samples chosen are the active students who follow the teaching and learning process in their school in online and offline ways. The findings show that students are having great experiences in teaching and learning English. In general, the students respond to the statements very well with positive responses dominated by Agree and Strongly Agree. It showed that the students’ perceptions of the teacher’s role in English learning are various in the Covid-19 pandemic situation. In general, Covid-19 had a significant impact on the world of education, including in the educational system in Indonesia. Traditional and routine learning that emphasizes the interaction of teachers and students in the classroom and outside the classroom shifts to distance learning.

Abstract

Motivation is one of the keys to get achievement in learning. This study is designed to analyze students’ motivation in learning English. Specifically, this study focuses on finding out whether the students’ motivation is either integrative or instrumental. This study is conducted in the framework of mixed-method research in which the researcher used both qualitative and quantitative methods. SMP Berea Tondano is the location where the research is carried out. The data sources of this research are all the students at SMP Berea Tondano who lived at Etty Orphanage. To collect the data, the researchers uses a questionnaire consisting of 10 questions where 5 statements are to measure students’ integrative motivation and 5 questions for measuring their instrumental motivation. The data obtained are analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings reveal that the students have both integrative and instrumental motivation in learning English. This study further shows that students’ integrative motivation (with a mean score of 3.96) is higher than their instrumental motivation (with a mean score of 3.87). Motivation is an important part of the learning process. Because it affects the students’ attitudes, morals, and achievement in learning not just English but all the other subject.

Abstract

This study is to prove whether the use of the Matching Game in teaching vocabulary can achieve students’ vocabulary or not. In doing this research, the writers use quantitative research through post-test only with an experimental group and a control group. The experimental class is taught in test after treatment and the control class is taught by conventional method. This study is conducted on students in the second grade of SMPN 2 East Siau. The sample is taken from one class of junior high school. After conducting research, it can be concluded that the use of Matching Games is very effective in improving a student's English vocabulary skills. It also further supports that the selection of appropriate and educational games greatly affects the output of each learner, of course, by taking into account demographic factors and the background of each student in order to increasingly provide games that match their interests.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to reveal about the deviance of Josephine and its impact that reflected in Agatha Christie’s Crooked House. This research is classified as a qualitative research because the data are taken only in the form of words as well as the quotations. The data sources are taken from the novel itself and supported by other books, dictionary, journals and other references from the internet as the secondary sources. In term of the analysis, the researchers use psychological approach because it is very close with human life, such as feelings, thoughts, and desires. The result of this study shows that there are acts of deviance done by Josephine and it has big impacts. Josephine is planned and killed her family members; she is even willing to hurt herself as an alibi. It happens because of the id of Josephine, the desires to take revenge without thinking about the consequences and the relationship between the perpetrator and the victims that should be satisfied. The impacts of the deviance Josephine done was the left people are living in fear and afraid of being the next target. It is ruining the whole family and also it will effect to their mental health.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to determine whether or not using animation videos can improve students' vocabularies. The students of SMP GPdI BEREA Tondano, specifically the 20 students in seventh grade, were selected as the study's subject. One group had pre- and post-tests as part of the pre-experimental design used in this study. Two meetings were needed to complete the study. The research first provides a pre-test, the treatment, and a post-test. The method of data collection uses a multiple-choice test with 20 options as the instrument. This study's findings demonstrate that animation videos can increase students' vocabulary, as evidenced by the higher post-test scores than pre-test scores. The mean pre-test score is 31.5 and the mean post-test score is 80. It is true that watching animated videos can improve kids' vocabularies.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the thoughts of feminism through the struggle that women faced in the 19th century reflected through Josephine March in Alcott’s Little Women. In conducting this research, the qualitative method was used. This study can be classified as library research since the data were collected through reading the novel and reading some related books. The novel can be categorized as the primary source and the other sources as secondary sources. The data were analyzed based on the kinds of struggle and its impact and then the result was presented descriptively. In analyzing the data, the researcher used feminism approach. The result showed that the feminist struggle was shown in some aspects, like social relations, education, and job. The struggle brought a negative impact not only on women but also on societies. The struggle is caused by the negative treatment received by the women. Society taught that women are less important and should listen to what man says also woman can be happy with the support of man. The thought of freedom is so far away from her and other women in that era.

Abstract

This study presents the analysis of the Deceitfulness of Dr. Jekyll in Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The aim of this study is to analyze the qualities and conditions of Dr. Jekyll that form his deceitfulness by using the objective approach. The method used in this research is the library research method. This method is used also as the data collection technique to get information or references dealing with the object discussed. The objective approach is used here to analyze the structural elements of this novel like character, setting, conflict, and theme to reveal the research’s object. The result shows that the novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tells about Dr. Jekyll’s deceitfulness. The main instance of the deceitfulness of Dr. Jekyll in the novel is when he hides his real personality and when he is being a murderer. There are several reasons behind the actions of Dr. Jekyll: his strict childhood, his wrong ambition, and his bad environment.
