Abstract

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a gram-negative anaerobic bacteria which is an oral normal microflora located in subgingival area. This bacteria can cause inflamation and delayed wound healing after dental invasive procedures. Lidocaine 2% and articaine 4% are the most used anaesthetic agents in dentistry. Both of these agents have been studied for having antibacterial effect in certain concentrations. This will open the possibility of using local anaesthetic agents as antibacterial agent in dental invasive procedures to prevent infection after procedures. The purpose of this study is to analyze the difference inhibition of local anaesthetics drug lidocaine 2% and articaine 4% on the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria in vitro. The study subject was pure culture of Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277 divided by two group, one group with lidocaine 2% and other with articaine 4%. This study was experimental laboratory with post test only control group design. The mean of inhibitions were obtained by measuring inhibition zone formed around paper discs with caliper in milimeter scale. The result showed Inhibition rate lidocaine 2% had greater rate than articaine 4% in inhibiting the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria in vitro. The conclusion was lidocaine 2% was more effective than articaine 4% in inhibiting the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria in vitro.

Abstract

Covid-19 is an infectious disease that attacks the human respiratory system that can cause respiratory infections, ranging from the common cold to serious illnesses, this disease is caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. The process of Covid-19 transmission can occur through direct contact, droplets that are spread through coughs or sneezes from infected people and aerosols in dental care procedures. Aerosols can be generated from dental procedures such as, the use of high-powered tools requiring air pressure and water spray. The purpose of writing is to describe the potential of aerosols in dental practice as a medium for transmission of Covid-19. Aerosols in dental care procedures have the potential to pose a risk in transmitting Covid-19. This is because aerosols are found in the Covid-19 virus which can contaminate surfaces, dental equipment, and the air around the treatment environment which can endanger dentists, staff, and patients.

Abstract

Background: Pulp and periapical disease may also result from the presence of a cervical cavity reaching the pulp chamber as an abfraction lesion. Abfraction causes the dentinal tubules to be exposed so that it becomes a pathway for microorganisms to enter the pulp. Root canal treatment in cases with abfraction lesions requires special management, so that contamination does not occur during treatment due to the exposed cervical part. Objective: Discusses the management of root canal treatment in teeth with abfractional lesions that penetrate the pulp chamber. Case Management: A 53-year-old male patient came RSGM Unand because he wanted to be treated for a cavity in his right lower posterior tooth and had a sudden throbbing pain. Based on the results of subjective, objective and preoperative radiographs, tooth 45 was diagnosed with pulp necrosis with chronic apical abscess. Pulp and periapical disease of tooth 45 was probably caused by the entry of microorganisms through the abfraction lesion that reached the pulp chamber. Temporary coronal seal of the abfraction cavity and access occlusal cavity is necessary to prevent the entry of microorganisms during root canal treatment procedures. The final restoration is a direct composite resin using a fiber-reinforced composite (FRC). Conclusion: The management of root canal treatment in this case of abfraction lesion showed success as indicated by the absence of subjective complaints, objective examination showed negative results, and periapical lesions showed healing seen on periapical radiographs.

Abstract

Halitosis is a general term used to describe the bad breath coming out of the oral cavity. Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) are a major component causes of halitosis, formed from the break down of protein substrate by gram-negative anaerobes such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tanerella forsythia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia and Treponema denticola. Guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) contain high levels of quercetin compounds that can inhibit the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of 5% guava leaf (Psidium guajava linn) extract of white fruit variant to decrease levels of Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) in halitosis sufferers. This research method was pre-experimental which consists of 19 subjects. The guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) extract was made by maceration method and diluted with distiled water at 5% concentration. The levels of Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) were measured by breath checker before (pre test) and after (post test) treatment. Wilcoxon test showed that there was a significant difference between the levels of Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) before and after gargling with 5% guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) extract of white fruit variant (p<0,05). The conclusion of this research was 5% guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) extract of white fruit variant effectively decreases levels of Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) in halitosis sufferers.

Abstract

Gingivitis is defined as gingival inflammation caused by dental plaque accumulation. Bacteria in the plaque is releasing toxin that would trigger neutrophil to move to gingival sulcus as a main protection. Plaque control mechanically or chemically will be an effective prevention and care for gingivitis. Chemical control is done by mouthwash. Pineapple extract (Ananas comosus L.merr) contains bromelain which has antibacterial and antiinflammation features. The aim of this study was to find the effect of using pineapple-extracted mouthwash (Ananas comosus L. Merr) toward neutrophil count drop in gingival crevicular fluid of mild gingivitis patients. This study was quasy experimental using pre-test and post-test design, conducted to 21 patients having mild gingivitis with gingival crevicular fluid were taken by paperpoint 30 for 30 seconds. The neutrophil count was done with microscope. Paired T-test analysis showed that there was significant reduction of neutrophil count before and after the intervention (p<0.05). Mouthwash using 50 % pineapple-extracted solution for four days was proven to reduce neutrophil count in gingival crevicular fluid of mild gingivitis patients.

Abstract

Dental plaque is the main cause of gingivitis. Plaque control mechanically or chemically is an effort to prevent and eliminate dental plaque. Chemical control is done by mouthwash. Pineapple extract contains bromelain enzyme which has antibacterial feature. To find the effect of using pineapple-extracted mouthwash in reducing bacterial colonies in dental plaque of mild gingivitis patients. This study was experimental laboratoris using pre- test and post-test with control group design, conducted in January-February 2018. Sample was 20 female students living in dormitory of Andalas university, divided into two group of treatment (using 50 % pineapple- extracted mouthwash) and control (using aquadest). Data was analyzed by T-test using SPSS. The result showed average drop of bacterial colonies in dental plaque of treatment group was higher than control group. Independent T-test showed that there was significant difference of bacterial colonies count between two groups (p=0.00). This was influenced by bromelain which has antibacterial feature by reducing bacterial surface tension with hidrolizing protein and glycoprotein in saliva that become the mediator of bacteria to adhere in dental surface. Mouthwash using 50 % pineapple-extracted solution for four days was proven to reduce bacterial colonies in dental plaque of mild gingivitis patients.
