Abstract

Sustainability has become central in global agricultural research, especially since the SDGs’ adoption in 2015. However, technocratic and market-based narratives still dominate, sidelining equity-based and community-rooted knowledge, particularly from developing countries. This study analyzes 411 Scopus-indexed articles (1990–2025) using bibliometric methods. Focusing on co-authorship, corresponding authorship, and citation networks, the analysis compares the pre-SDG (1990–2014) and SDG (2015–2025) periods. The findings show that, despite expanded international collaboration and increased participation from the Global South in the SDG era, epistemic leadership and citation visibility remain highly concentrated within Global North institutions. While Global South contributions have grown, their largely peripheral positioning limits their influence over dominant sustainability framings. These results indicate that sustainability framing in agricultural research is not conceptually neutral but structurally conditioned by unequal knowledge systems. Addressing such epistemic asymmetries is therefore essential for enabling more plural and context-sensitive sustainability discourses.

Abstract

The Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) and the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) are the European Union’s primary policy instruments for achieving energy transition targets, sustainability standards, and emission-reductions. These regulations restrict the use of palm oil as a feedstock for biodiesel and tighten traceability requirements for deforestation-free products, thereby potentially affecting Indonesia’s export performance. This study aims to analyze changes in share and market concentration of Indonesia’s palm oil exports (HS 151100) in four major EU destination countries, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Germany, following the implementation of RED II and the early phase of EUDR implementation. This research employed time series data from 2011 to 2024, divided into two periods: seven years before the policy implementation and seven years representing the early phase of RED II (2019-2024). However, the data remain limited for comprehensively assessing the impact of the EUDR, as they only cover the 2023-2024 period. The methods used include the Market Share Index (MSI), the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), and a two-mean difference test using a paired sample t-test. The results show a significant decline in Indonesia’s market share in three main countries, Netherlands, Italy, and Spain following the implementation of the policies, while Germany remains relatively stable. The HHI value decreased from 0.016 to 0.06, indicating a shift in market structure from a moderately concentrated market to a more differentiated oligopoly market. This change indicates that Indonesia has undertaken market diversification in response to increasing non-tariff barriers and policy risks imposed by the European Union.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of agricultural extension in enhancing productivity of local maize farming systems in Siompu District, South Buton, an island ecosystem characterized by shallow sandy–coral soils and a dominant smallholder strategy combining maize cultivation and goat husbandry. Using a quantitative survey complemented by qualitative field observations, data were collected from 82 maize farmers selected through stratified random sampling. Four variables were examined: (1) effectiveness of extension services, (2) adoption of site-specific maize cultivation technologies, (3) integration of maize–goat farming, and (4) maize productivity. Results indicate extension performance is moderate, constrained by infrequent visits and limited use of field demonstrations. Technology adoption is also moderate; farmers readily adopt low-cost practices such as improved row spacing and organic fertiliser, but show low uptake of key soil and water conservation measures, including mulching, minimum tillage, and balanced fertilisation, which are crucial for sandy soils. The maize–goat integration index shows strong use of goat manure and maize residues, yet integration remains traditional and falls short of zero-waste nutrient cycling. Regression analysis shows technology adoption has the strongest effect on productivity, followed by farming-system integration and extension performance. Overall productivity remains low due to partial agronomic innovation uptake and suboptimal livestock-resource integration. The study recommends a more intensive, site-specific, and integrated extension model that prioritises soil conservation technologies aligned with existing maize–goat practices to strengthen sustainable maize production in small-island dryland agroecosystems. Government seed support is limited and irregular, strongly reinforcing farmers’ reliance on locally sourced seed.

Abstract

Interrelated structural, social, and administrative factors still influence rural poverty in East Java. This activity aims to analyze the effectiveness of various approaches to poverty alleviation, develop an integrative model appropriate to the region's characteristics, and formulate recommendations for sustainable multi-strategy policies. Data collection was conducted through document studies, observations, and indept interview in three regency, Probolinggo, Blitar, and Nganjuk. The research results show that low agricultural productivity, limited market access, weak local economic institutions, dependence on social assistance, and inaccurate beneficiary data are the leading causes of rural poverty. Each region has a different context, ranging from mentalities and economic capacity barriers to infrastructure inequalities and data accuracy issues that trigger social conflicts. Based on these findings, a multi-strategy model was developed around three main pillars: sharpening fiscal and non-fiscal resources, integrating cross-sectoral programs with the same objectives, and filling program gaps through data strengthening and profession-based empowerment. The multi-strategy approach framework serves as a foundation to ensure that interventions are targeted and aligned with the real needs of the community. This recommendation model is expected to strengthen improve program effectiveness, and accelerate rural poverty reduction by increasing economic capacity and fostering more targeted policy synergies.

Abstract

Chayote is one of the main sources of income for the majority of households in Kampung Mananmur, Kayauni District, Fakfak Regency. The village’s location, approximately one hour from the center of Fakfak City, poses a challenge for farmers, particularly those lacking personal transportation, in marketing their harvests. This study aims to analyze the production costs, revenue, and the economic feasibility of chayote farming using the Revenue–Cost (R/C) Ratio in Kayauni District, Fakfak Regency. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach with a census (saturated sampling) technique, where all farmers in the population were included as respondents. A total of 33 farmers residing in Kampung Mananmur participated. Data were collected through structured questionnaires distributed uniformly to all respondents. The results indicate that the average annual revenue of chayote farming is IDR 22,267,002, while the average annual production cost is IDR 8,277,998. The economic feasibility analysis shows an R/C Ratio of 3.68, suggesting that chayote farming in Kayauni District is profitable and feasible for further development, as the ratio exceeds one.

Abstract

Clove farming is a strategic plantation commodity contributing significantly to farmers’ income and regional economic development in Indonesia. However, this sector is characterized by high uncertainty due to climate variability, pest and disease attacks, and input limitations, which lead to production and income risks. This study aims to analyze production, income, and production risk, as well as to identify the factors affecting production risk in clove farming. The research was conducted in Luwu Regency using a survey method with purposive sampling involving 40 farmers. Data were analyzed using farm income analysis, coefficient of variation (CV) to measure production risk, and multiple linear regression to determine influencing factors. The results show that average production is 720 kg/ha/year, indicating moderate productivity, with net income reaching IDR 40,290,000/ha/year. The CV value of 0.29 reflects a moderate level of production risk, implying considerable variability in output that may affect income stability. Regression analysis reveals that land area, farming experience, labor, and fertilizer use have a negative and significant effect on production risk. These findings suggest that improving farm scale, farmer capacity, and input management is essential to enhance productivity and reduce production risk in clove farming systems.

Abstract

The agricultural sector plays a strategic role in improving farmers’ welfare, particularly in the food crops subsector where rice remains Indonesia’s main staple. The Farmers’ Terms of Trade is widely used as an indicator to measure farmers’ welfare by reflecting their purchasing power. This study aims to analyze the effect of paddy prices and rice production on the Farmers’ Terms of Trade in the food crops subsector in West Sumatra Province. This research uses secondary time series data from 2015 to 2024 obtained from official statistical sources. The analysis applies a multiple linear regression model supported by classical assumption tests to ensure the validity of the results. The findings indicate that paddy prices and rice production simultaneously have a significant effect on Farmers’ Terms of Trade. Partially, paddy prices have a positive and significant effect, indicating that increases in paddy prices directly improve farmers’ welfare. In contrast, rice production has a positive but not significant effect on Farmers’ Terms of Trade, suggesting that higher production does not necessarily improve farmers’ welfare due to production instability, declining harvested areas, and increasing production costs. The model explains 61.4% of the variation in Farmers’ Terms of Trade. These results imply that improving farmers’ welfare requires not only increasing production but also ensuring price stability and enhancing production efficiency. Therefore, policies should focus on stabilizing paddy prices and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
