Abstract

An integrated farming system that combines the horticulture and beef cattle subsectors based on the zero-waste principle is one of the innovative solutions to reduce negative environmental impacts while increasing production efficiency. Barru Regency, with its potential in horticulture and livestock, is a strategic area for the implementation of this system. However, the success of its implementation highly depends on the active involvement of various stakeholders. This study aims to examine stakeholders' perspectives on the development of a zero waste integration system of horticultural crops and cattle in Barru Regency. A qualitative approach was used to explore the perceptions, interests, roles, and challenges faced by stakeholders in the implementation of this system. Data were collected through in depth interviews, including Focus Group Discussions (FGD), participatory observations, and document studies. The informant sources identified in this study consist of 15 cattle farmers, 10 horticulture farmers, 2 field extension officers, 1 government official, and 1 academics. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis methods. The research findings show that 80% of farmers perceive waste reuse as economically beneficial, and 40% lack access to composting and biogas technology. Based on these findings, synergy among actors, regulatory strengthening, and inclusive policy support are needed to realize a sustainable zero-waste farming system.

Abstract

Cocoa plays a significant role in promoting regional and agroindustrial development, particularly as a raw material for the food and beverage industry. Sulawesi, as Indonesia’s largest cocoa-producing region, offers good-quality cocoa beans; however, its processed products have yet to gain a strong foothold in international markets. PT. Indonesia Hijau, a cocoa processing company, faces several challenges in sustaining its business, including market demand fluctuations, production cost efficiency, raw material price volatility, shifting consumer preferences, and competition from imported products. This study aims to evaluate market demand trends, economic performance, and the competitive advantages of PT. Indonesia Hijau. Two main analytical approaches were employed: market demand trend analysis and Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM). The findings show that demand for PT. Indonesia Hijau’s cocoa products fluctuated from 2018 to 2023, with a decline during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021) and a recovery afterward. Chocolate bar and cocoa powder products demonstrated consistent growth post-pandemic, indicating promising market potential for processed cocoa. PAM analysis results reveal that PT. Indonesia Hijau holds both competitive and comparative advantages, as reflected by a A PCR of 0.76 and a DCR of 0.79 both falling below the threshold of one indicate that the company's production operations are cost effective and demonstrate strong potential for continued economic development. These findings provide practical insights for cocoa processors and policymakers to enhance supply chain efficiency and strengthen the global competitiveness of Indonesian cocoa products.

Abstract

Modern agricultural development requires not only technological innovation but also a deep understanding of social and institutional dynamics. This study employs Participatory Social Mapping (PSM) to analyze social structures and actor networks within cocoa farming communities in Polewali Mandar. Using purposive sampling, five key informants were selected: four leaders of cocoa farmer groups who are still active in cocoa cultivation and one local cocoa enterprise, PT. Indonesia Hijau. Data were examined through qualitative descriptive analysis combined with Social Network Analysis (SNA) to map relationships and identify central actors. Results show that cocoa farmers form strong, multi-layered networks. Internally, interactions occur within farmer groups in Luyo, Tutar, Mapilli, and Tapango, serving as hubs for knowledge sharing. Externally, farmers are linked with supporting institutions such as PT. Mars (development), Barry Callebaut (seed supply), PT. Indonesia Hijau (collaboration), and the UIH Cooperative (distribution and marketing). These networks are marked by openness and collaboration, with farmers as central actors. Despite geographical constraints, communication is sustained both physically and virtually. The UIH Cooperative emerges as the most connected and influential actor due to its daily engagement in farmers’ socio-economic activities. Supporting institutions contribute to innovation, sustainability, and input provision. The study highlights the critical role of social capital and institutional connectivity in advancing sustainable cocoa farming and effective agricultural extension.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the distribution pattern of rice commodities in Banua Baru Village. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation, interviews using questionnaires, and documentation. Primary and secondary data were collected from a sample of 40 people and analyzed using descriptive percentage analysis and marketing margin analysis. The results show that there are three rice distribution patterns in Banua Baru Village, namely: (1) farmer to collector to rice mill to retailer to consumer, (2) farmer to rice mill to wholesaler to retailer to consumer, and (3) farmer to rice mill to wholesaler to consumer. This study also found that the highest marketing margin occurs in rice mills (60%), followed by collectors (12.5%), retailers (7.41%), and collectors (7.14%). Based on the value of profit margin, rice mills have the highest profit of Rp4,500/Kg, followed by collectors (Rp1,500/Kg), retailers (Rp1,000/Kg), and collectors (Rp500/Kg). This study also identifies several problems faced by farmers in marketing their rice products, such as limited information on rice prices and delayed payments by collectors.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of agricultural extension officers in the development of the Pattiro Kondoe Farmer Group in Saharu Hamlet, Lamatti Riattang Village, Bulupoddo District, Sinjai Regency. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with the support of quantitative data through a Likert scale questionnaire, this study involved 18 active members of the farmer group who were purposively selected. Five main roles of extension workers were studied, including facilitator, innovator, motivator, dynamizer, and educator. The results showed that the roles of extension workers as innovators and facilitators scored the highest in the excellent category, followed by the other roles with good scores. Nevertheless, a number of barriers were found, such as limited field visits, farmers' dependence on external assistance, and low participation of certain members. These findings point to the importance of continued support for extension workers, strengthening of participatory mentoring models, and the need for more relevant agricultural technology training. This study recommends that agricultural policies in remote areas pay more attention to the sustainability of the role of extension workers in strengthening farmers' institutions independently.

Abstract

The vulnerability of agrarian communities to shocks, seasonality, and long-term trends is a complex challenge that requires holistic analysis. This study aims to analyze the dynamic interaction between the three dimensions of vulnerability (shock-seasonality-trend) in agrarian communities in disaster-prone areas, using a holistic approach that fills the gap in previous literature, which tends to be partial. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews (25 key informants), focus group discussions (4 sessions), and secondary document analysis. The findings reveal that: (1) Shocks such as natural disasters and disease outbreaks weaken economic resilience due to infrastructure damage and health costs; (2) Seasonal pressures (pest attacks, price fluctuations) increase income instability, exacerbated by dependence on monoculture and limited market access; (3) Long-term trends (droughts, climate change) threaten agricultural sustainability through extreme weather and declining land productivity. Community adaptation strategies include crop diversification, the formation of savings and loan groups, and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, but these are hampered by a lack of institutional and technological support. This study highlights the need for integrated policies that combine ecosystem-based mitigation, strengthening early warning systems, and climate resilience training programs. The study's implications contribute to the literature on multidimensional vulnerability and provide practical recommendations for achieving sustainable community resilience.
