Abstract

Regular exercise has been proven to be effective in maintaining physical and mental fitness, but there are still many people, including farmers in Pondokrejo Village, who ignore it because they are busy and believe that farming activities are enough to replace exercise. Lack of understanding and limited facilities contribute to low interest in regular exercise, which risks reducing long-term fitness. This research aims to describe the interests and habits of the people of Pondokrejo Village, Tempurejo District, Jember Regency, towards sports activities. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, data was collected through an online questionnaire from 100 respondents aged 18–59 years. The research results show that the majority of respondents have good and regular exercise habits, with a frequency of 3-5 times a week, and are accompanied by an understanding of the importance of warming up and cooling down. These findings indicate that respondents not only live an active lifestyle, but also realize the physical and psychological benefits of exercise. However, there are still some people who pay little attention to sports because of busy work activities, especially among farmers. Therefore, ongoing education is needed regarding the importance of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle and long-term disease prevention.

Abstract

This study aims to explore arm strength training practices within the Pencak Silat community, focusing on Tapak Suci Martial Arts School at Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnographic approach, allowing an in-depth exploration of training techniques, routines, and practitioner experiences. The findings reveal that Tapak Suci's traditional training methods—such as bodyweight exercises, striking hard objects, and lifting natural weights—are still widely practiced and play a crucial role in building endurance and mental resilience. However, these methods lack structured progression and explosive power development, which are essential for modern competitive fighting. The study also finds that modern training techniques, including resistance band exercises, weightlifting, and plyometric drills, offer scientifically-backed advantages in muscle strength enhancement. The integration of both traditional and modern methods can create a more effective and well-rounded training program, optimizing fighter performance while preserving Pencak Silat’s cultural identity. In conclusion, while traditional training methods remain fundamental, their integration with modern sports science techniques provides greater efficiency, strength gains, and injury prevention. Future research should explore long-term impacts of combined training approaches and assess how practitioners culturally adapt to modern techniques while maintaining the essence of traditional martial arts training.

Abstract

Pencak silat is not just a martial art, but also an effective medium in developing the physical, mental, and character of athletes. Intensive training focused on kicking techniques can accelerate motor reactions and increase explosiveness of movement, so that kicking speed can develop significantly. In addition to physical benefits, pencak silat also has a positive impact on mental and emotional aspects. This training helps athletes increase self-confidence, develop discipline, strengthen concentration, and hone stress management skills. The courage, perseverance, and never-give-up attitude instilled in each training session contribute to forming athletes who are tough, competitive, and ready to face challenges. Moreover, pencak silat also teaches fundamental values that support the formation of athlete character holistically. The philosophy of movement and training principles implemented in this program not only aims to improve competitive ability, but also instill integrity, sportsmanship, and high fighting spirit. Thus, the implementation of pencak silat in sports programs to increase athletes' kicking speed has a strategic value in forming individuals who are not only healthy and skilled, but also have character and are ready to compete at a higher level.

Abstract

Talent identification in young karate athletes is a crucial phase for optimizing targeted achievement development programs. This study aims to apply the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to establish a priority hierarchy of criteria and sub-criteria in talent development for karate athletes aged 6–12 in West Java Province. This study involved 22 karate experts, consisting of coaches and accomplished athletes, to assess the weighting of three main criteria:antropometer, biomotor, andsomatotype, which were further broken down into 14 sub-criteria. Quantitative data analysis was performed using Expert Choice 11 software. The results of the analysis show that in the domainantropometer, height (0.173) is the indicator with the highest priority. In the biomotor domain, agility (0.225) shows the highest weight value compared to strength, endurance, speed, and flexibility. Meanwhile, in the domainsomatotype, body typologymesomorf(0.418) ranks as the top priority, followed by endomorph (0.379) and ectomorph (0.202). Comprehensively, the criteriasomatotype(34%) made the most significant contribution to the overall talent identification model, followed by biomotor andantropometer. These findings affirm the AHP's capability in developing a systematic and objective talent identification model, which can serve as a strategic guideline for coaches in the selection and development process of potential karate athletes from an early age.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the perceptions of 12th-grade students regarding physical literacy, a multidimensional construct that includes motivation, self-confidence, physical competence, and the knowledge required for lifelong engagement in physical activity. Physical literacy plays a crucial role in promoting active and healthy lifestyles, especially during adolescence—a critical period for developing lifelong health behaviors. Employing a quantitative descriptive design, this study involved 83 students from SMA Negeri Kalisat, Jember, who completed the Indonesian-adapted version of the Perceived Physical Literacy Instrument (PPLI). The instrument consists of 9 Likert-scale items assessing various components of physical literacy. Results revealed that 41.5% of students strongly agreed and 29.7% agreed with the physical literacy indicators, suggesting a generally positive perception. However, a significant number of students expressed uncertainty or disagreement on certain items, particularly related to social skills and self-management. These findings underline the importance of integrating physical literacy into school curricula and physical education programs. Strengthening students’ understanding and awareness of physical literacy can enhance their readiness to engage in lifelong physical activity, improve physical and mental health, and support national efforts toward youth health development.
