Abstract

Abstract This study examines the portrayal of habitus and symbolic violence in the character of Vic Van Allen in the film Deep Water (2022), directed by Adrian Lyne. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, analyzing the film's narrative and semiotics to identify key scenes, dialogues, and non-verbal expressions that reflect the concepts of habitus and symbolic violence. The findings of this study indicate that Vic Van Allen's habitus is shaped by the accumulation of economic capital and a strong socio-cultural class, making him a calm and manipulative individual with significant control over his environment. This study highlights that symbolic violence, although invisible, has a profoundly destructive impact on victims and can perpetuate power imbalances in interpersonal relationships among the elite. Abstract

Idiom is a fixed group of words which has a particular meaning. Translating idioms to another language can be complicated and quite challenging because idioms cannot be translated word-by-word. This research aims to identify English idioms in Yaan Martel’s Life of Pi and to examine the translation strategies used by Tanti Lesmana in translating the novel into Indonesian based on Mona Baker’s (1992) theory. The data of this qualitative research were collected from Life of Pi as the Source Text (ST) and Kisah Pi as the Target Text (TT). The results show that there are 18 idioms found in the novel. The data of ST idioms were verified by checking their existence in online dictionaries. To determine their translation strategies, the researchers analyzed the meaning of the ST idioms then found their equivalences in Kamus Ungkapan Bahasa Indonesia (Badudu, 2008). These idioms were translated using three out of four translation strategies. The most frequently applied strategy is translation by paraphrase with 13 idioms, translation by using an idiom of similar meaning and dissimilar form of 4 idioms, and finally translation by omission of 1 idiom. Translation by paraphrase is the most frequently applied strategy because of the difficulty in finding equal idioms in target text.

Abstract

This article analyses Amanda Lovelace's poetry collections Flower Crowns and Fearsome Things. This article discusses how Amanda Lovelace recodes Greek mythology empowering in particular the figure of Persephone. Also addressed in this study is the manner in which Persephone, traditionally seen as a weak goddess carried off by other gods, is portrayed as having strength, determination and the complexity of woman's nature. This study has a qualitative approach with textual analysis from a women's literary criticism perspective. The results depict Persephone as a figure of both tenderness and strength, and as one of vulnerability and independence. Through these poems, women are shown taking suffering and turning it into resilience, pushing back against male narratives and becoming more than what the pressure of society represents. The reinterpretation of myth presented in this paper can be viewed as a strong means to criticize patriarchy and draw an empowering picture of women. This study further validates that contemporary poetry not only serves as an art form, but it also serves as a contemporary social critique for identity empowerment within the contemporary era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze class and gender injustice in the Entrok work by Okky Madasari through the theory approach of Marxist Feminism. The background of this study is based on the limitations of previous studies that have not been fully integrated the relationship between economic oppression and gender subordination in the sociopolitical context of the New Order. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with the main source in the form of an entry novel text, and the focus of analysis is directed at narrative structures, character development, and important dialogues that reflect social inequality. The theory of Marxist feminism, especially Heidi Hartmann's ideas, was used to understand how capitalism and patriarchy work simultaneously in oppressing lower class women. The findings show that women in the novel experience layered oppression: economically as part of the exploited working class, and socially as victims of patriarchal norms that limit their roles and rights. Symbols such as entrepreneurs become a representation of women's desires for freedom and self-recognition. Critical awareness of Sumarni figures over the division of gender-based labor reflects the potential resistance to oppressive structures. The results of this research are nine data, including four data of class injustice and five data of gender injustice. In conclusion, novel entrok not only illustrates the social reality of oppressed women, but also offers alternative narratives that ignite class and gender awareness. This study contributes to the development of a more intensurctional and relevant feminist literary study to the issue of today's social justice.

Abstract

This research examines gender stereotypes, and the roles and positions of women in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. The analysis utilizes a descriptive qualitative approach, presenting and describing the data and findings in narrative form. The theoretical framework is grounded in Rosenstand's (2021) feminism, which advocates for equal opportunities and pay for women and men, free from gender-based discrimination. The research findings reveal four types of feminism depicted in the Little Women, focusing on the characters' choices between achieving their dreams and living within the confines of marriage. Little Women not only chronicles the characters' journeys from adolescence to adulthood but also illustrates their encounters with gender stereotypes embedded in societal and cultural constructs. The conclusion underscores the marginalized position of women, who lack the same opportunities as men. Various societal constraints limit women's freedoms, placing them in restrictive social roles and causing internal conflicts between pursuing personal desires and adhering to societal expectations.

Abstract

This study analyzes the function of declarative sentences in constructing emotional narratives within the lyrics of "August" by Taylor Swift. This study exploits a descriptive qualitative methodology with a discourse analysis approach to inspect the implication of declarative structures in showing profound emotional themes such as longing, loss, regret, and unrequited love, transcending their grammatical function. Unlike interrogative or imperative forms, declarative sentences within the song express personal veracity and emotional reflections, allowing listeners to connect with the narrative as an array of introspective memories. This study classifies declarative sentences into five functional categories: descriptive, reflective, situational, conclusive, and existential, each enhancing dissimilar aspects of narrative and emotional resonance. The results expose that declarative sentences present as appliances for transmitting information and as rhetorical tools that enhance emotional closeness between the narrator and the audience. Taylor Swift's lyrics design a poetic monologue that captivates listeners, intertwining personal narrative with universal emotional depth. The research prior discourse analysis, stylistics, and popular music studies by illustrating how grammatical structure can impart huge emotional and narrative meaning in contemporary songwriting.

Abstract

This study examines the lyrics of Lana Del Rey's album "Born to Die" (2012) as a literary text rich in figurative language and explores how they represent the three components of love—intimacy, passion, and commitment—in Sternberg's Triangle of Love Theory. The study focuses on the dominant types of figurative language—personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, metonymy, litotes, and irony—and maps their meanings to the theme of love in the album. The approach used is qualitative, using a close reading technique of the lyrics, followed by data collection (listening to and reading the lyrics), identification, classification based on the type of figurative language and its relationship to Sternberg's components of love, and data reduction to select the most relevant data. The primary data source is the album's lyrics, while secondary data includes theoretical references on figurative language and Sternberg's theory of love. The research limitation strictly excludes non-lyrical musical elements (vocals, arrangements, instruments) so that the analysis is focused on the lyric text as the object of linguistic-literary study. Theoretically, this research is expected to enrich stylistic studies on popular music; practically, the research provides an analytical model that connects figurative language devices in lyrics with the emotional dimensions of love according to Sternberg.

Abstract

This study analyzes types of cultural words and translation procedures in the Islamic self-help book 'Reclaim Your Heart' by Yasmin Mogahed. The objectives of this study are to identify the cultural words in the book and the types of translation procedures applied in translating those words using a qualitative method. From the study's findings and discussion, it can be concluded that four basic categories of cultural words are present in the book: organization, material, gestures and habits, ecology, and social culture. The type of cultural word mostly found is organization related to the Islamic religion. From 57 samples of cultural words, 34 (59,6%) cultural words were categorized into organization, 7 (12,2%) cultural words were categorized into material culture, 6 (10,5%) cultural words were categorized into gesture and habit, 5 (8,7%) cultural words were categorized into ecology and the rest were five cultural words that belonged to social culture (8,7%). In translating cultural words, the study reveals that the translator employed transference, naturalization, literal translation, explanation, and adaptation procedures

Abstract

The integration of culture and intercultural communicative competence (ICC) into English language teaching (ELT) has become an essential focus in language education, particularly within English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. This systematic review synthesizes findings from 23 empirical studies conducted across diverse geographical and educational settings. The review research question is (1) How do English language teachers perceive and implement ICC in EFL/ESL classrooms across different cultural contexts. The analysis reveals that teachers’ perceptions of ICC are generally positive, but actual classroom practices often depend on contextual factors such as institutional support, training, and cultural familiarity. A significant gap remains between theoretical recognition of ICC and its practical application. Key challenges include insufficient pedagogical guidance, limited resources, and lack of assessment strategies. Conversely, studies highlight opportunities in using culturally relevant materials, narrative texts, and experiential learning to foster intercultural understanding. The review further finds that embedding cultural content in ELT can enhance learner motivation, promote autonomy, and improve intercultural sensitivity. This review underscores the importance of equipping educators with the skills and frameworks necessary to teach culture effectively. It also calls for future research focused on longitudinal impacts, student perspectives, and the development of context-sensitive ICC pedagogies. Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of using the word anjir as a popular emotional expression in informal conversations within modern Indonesian society. This phenomenon reflects the dynamic nature of language and cultural familiarity in everyday communication. Through a semantic and pragmatic approach, this research aims to analyze the function of anjir in various social and situational contexts. Data were collected using questionnaires distributed to respondents and analyzed using a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative methods to understand social contexts and quantitative methods to measure the frequency and patterns of usage. The results show that anjir is most frequently used to express surprise (58.8%), followed by humor (29.4%), admiration (14.1%), and anger (1.1%). These findings reveal that anjir functions as an emotional amplifier and a tool for fostering closeness in informal conversations, although its usage is considered less appropriate in formal situations. This study highlights the flexibility of linguistic expressions in adapting to modern communication needs while contributing to the semantic and pragmatic studies of the Indonesian language.
