Abstract

More and more linguists are becoming interested morphology, particularly in dialectal morphology. A solid theory of word production is a prerequisite for the development of any comprehensive theory of language. However, there are a number of unresolved issues that render any morphological theory weakness due to the lack of evidence-based solutions as some of these issues can be essential to the theory. The acquisition and learning of word formation rules is something else that concerns us, beside tongue morphology awareness, instructions, strategies, and interpretation analysis. As part of the search for papers for this review, a number of electronic databases were scrutinized. All descriptors were used in combination with morphology, awareness, instruction, strategies, and analysis. Ancestral searches were also carried out, and content analysis has been employed developing a goal interpretation of any type of morphological content. Results and discussions are derived in this regard from the researcher’s own undertaking as well as that of other scholars. It is plainly evident that morphology is a bough of linguistics after gathering a total of thirty-four (34) explorations from numerous abstractions and fieldworkers. The study and modeling of language structure are major constituents of linguistics in all of its manifestations, historical evolution, and forms.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the naming of sub-villages and the diversity of cultural vocabulary in Bawodesolo Village, Gunungsitoli District, Gunungsitoli City, North Sumatra Province. The focus of this research is on three sub-villages: Delafiga, Hilinangea, and Simanaere. Using a phenomenological research design, this study involves semi-structured interviews with local residents to understand the meanings and cultural contexts of these sub-village names. The results of the research show that the sub-village names reflect the cultural identity, history, and values of the local community. Names such as "Delafiga" and "Simanaere" are not only geographical markers but also hold historical narratives and cultural concepts that are significant to the community. The analysis of cultural vocabulary reveals that the terms used by the residents reflect their relationship with the environment, spiritual beliefs, and social practices. This study highlights the importance of toponymy in understanding cultural identity and suggests that regional development policies should consider the cultural values embedded in place names. This research contributes to the preservation of local cultural heritage and provides valuable insights for further studies on cultural dynamics in this area.

Abstract

When a poet writes a poem, it may be influenced by his / her feeling and situation. Similarly, based on Emily Dickinson’s biography, it is told that since 1874 she spent her life in mourning because of several deaths. Emily's father died in 1874, Samuel Bowles died in 1878, J.G. Holland died in 1881, her nephew Gilbert died in 1883, and both Charles Wadsworth and Emily's mother died in 1882. For over those few years, many of the most influential and precious friendships of Emily's passed away (http://www.edwardslys.com/dickinson.htm). The situation that happened to her absolutely influenced her feeling. Then, it may give her a way to the more concentrated obsession with death in her poetry. This study shows influence of Emily Dickinson’s life background on the concept of death found in her poem “Because I Could Not Stop for Death”. The poem is influenced by the poet’s life background as follows;  Her religious background includes Calvinism, Puritanism and Transcendentalism give influence to her perception of death.

Abstract

Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, a seminal work in American literature, profoundly explores the roles, aspirations, and challenges faced by women in the 19th century. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War and its aftermath, the novel follows the lives of the March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—as they navigate the complexities of womanhood in a society governed by rigid gender norms. Through rich character development and a compelling narrative, Little Women offers insight into the evolving landscape of women's rights and feminist thought during a pivotal era in American history. This paper aims to analyze the representation of feminism in Little Women, examining how the novel both conforms to and challenges traditional gender expectations. Drawing on liberal, Marxist, existentialist, and radical feminist theories, the paper explores various aspects of the March sisters' experiences, shedding light on their pursuit of autonomy, independence, and self-determination. Through a comprehensive analysis of key passages and character dynamics, the study uncovers the ways in which Alcott's work contributes to the broader discourse surrounding women's rights and gender equality.

Abstract

This research is about the cyber-bullying in Sophie Mckenzie’s SweetFreak. This research’s objectives are to describe the extrinsic element that are the causes, types and effects of cyber-bullying in the novel. This research used psychological approach in its method and the descriptive qualitative method for its research design. Through the use of the Lifestyle-Routine Activity Theory by Candace et al. (2023) a theory to determine the likelihood of victimization, the researcher found that the cyber-bullying in this novel happened because of three factors: motivated offender, target suitability, absence of guardianship. The motivated offender factor happened because the culprit of the cyber-bullying was driven to do the cyber-bullying, target suitability factor happened because the victim of the cyber-bullying had done something prior that made her suitable to be targeted by the perpetrator, the absence of guardianship happened because no real elders in the novel ever tried to protect or supervised the victim. Then in terms of types of cyber-bullying, the researcher found that there are five types of cyber-bullying that are used in the novel. The types of cyber-bullying are: online harassment, flaming, denigration, photograph & video, fraping. As for the effects, the researcher found there are three kinds of effect from the cyber-bullying, that are displayed by the main character in the novel. They are: academic effect, which disrupts the main character’s school life, the social effect that ruined the main character’s interaction with her peers, and finally the emotional effect that disturbed the psyche of the main character.

Abstract

Currently, illicit relationships such as those of same-sex couples have special symbols that they use as their identity. These symbols are created by their community. We can see directly and analyse their community’s symbols through movies. One of them is the gay movie that this research examined, "Boy Meets Boy". This research uses qualitative methods, which are analyzed using Roland Barthes's semiotic theory. This research aims to identify or find gay symbols using Roland Barthes's semiotic theory formulation. This research obtained 3 gay symbols. The symbols obtained is the result of Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis with three meanings, namely denotation, connotation and myth. Denotation is a real (visual) reading of meaning. Connotation is a subjective reading of meaning, while myth is a relationship between meaning and symptoms or phenomena that are believed by many people. The datum is obtained from the scene of non-verbal communication shown by the gay couple in the "Boy Meets Boy" movie. Non-verbal communication in this movie includes physical touch, kissing on the lips, kissing the hair, stealing glances, glances or stares, and intimate relationships. The implications of existing symbols basically do not have any meaning if we do not know the meaning of the symbols. This symbol is closely associated with the LGBTQ+ community. Hopefully, this research can provide knowledge to find out more about this community.

Abstract

Media have been frequently emphasizing the information through headlines to as it usually conveys a catchy advertising-style headline and retrieves the gist of the story. Regardless of its contents, the headline becomes one of the most significant factors in attracting as much attention as possible from the readers. Therefore, choosing the appropriate headlines is crucial for the media to produce their intention properly to the readers. One of the ways is using nominalization. This research demonstrates the effects of nominalization on the headlines taken from NBCUniversal. The eight effects of nominalization by Machin and Mayr is utilized as the main theory of this study. Utilizing a qualitative method rooted in the Critical Discourse Analysis approach, the research data is the headlines sourced from the Coronation of King Charles III on NBCUniversal. From the total of eight effects, this study found six effects of nominalizations that appeared on the headlines of NBCUniversal media including, people and responsibilities are removed, the sense of time is removed, the action becomes a thing, the common usage as stable entities, the avoidance of the agent while accumulating a sense of action in the text, andthe compressed of the story details. The study also proved that understanding nominalization theory can help in generating captivating headlines to attract readers’ attention effectively.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of code-switching in the YouTube video titled "Alasan Aku Milih S2 di Harvard Walau Tanpa Beasiswa" by Zhafira Aqyla, an Indonesian YouTuber and Harvard graduate. The research focuses on identifying the types and functions of code-switching in her video using a sociolinguistic framework. Poplack's typology of code-switching—comprising inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and tag-switching guides the analysis. The results show that intra-sentential switching is the dominant type, making up 89.48% of the occurrences. This frequent integration of Indonesian and English within sentences suggests the speaker's ease in navigating both languages to convey ideas more precisely and efficiently. The study also highlights the influence of Zhafira's international educational background and professional environment on her code-switching behaviour, emphasizing her bilingual identity. These findings contribute to the broader understanding of bilingualism in social media contexts, particularly among educated individuals in global settings.
