Abstract

This study aimed to explore the constraints faced by students in learning a foreign language at Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges. The researchers formulated two main questions in this study: (1) What are the constraints in learning Spanish as a Foreign language learning in terms of (a) learning differences, (b) learning language material resources, and (c) classroom activities?; (2) What are the factors that affect the constraints in learning Spanish along with (a) learning differences, (b) learning language material resources, and (c) classroom activities? To answer the research questions, the researchers utilized a mixed-method research design. The researchers used a survey questionnaire for the data gathering. The researchers tabulated and calculated the weighted mean of each student‟s perception based on the questionnaire result given to them. Moreover, the researchers interviewed students chosen based on the criterion to triangulate the study results. In addition, thematic analysis was used to analyze the collected data from the transcribed interviews. Research ethics was properly observed during data collection. Furthermore, the findings showed that the constraints faced by the students in Spanish language learning are negative attitude, low motivation, usage of the different learning styles of students, ineffective language material resources, and classroom activities giving less opportunity for students to practice or perform their Spanish speaking skills. The results also revealed the factorsthat cause these constraints.

Abstract

This study explores politeness strategies in conversations about transgender perspectives, using Brown and Levinson's (1987) framework. The research employed a qualitative method, analyzing recorded conversations between male and female participants discussing transgender issues from social and religious perspectives. The analysis identifies four main strategies: positive politeness, negative politeness, bald-on record, and off-record. Positive politeness was the most frequently used strategy, with male speakers employing it 14 times and female speakers 7 times, primarily through agreement, repetition, and joking. Negative politeness strategies appeared 10 times, equally distributed between genders, using indirectness and questions. Bald-on record strategies were used 14 times, mostly by female speakers, indicating their tendency for direct communication. The off-record strategy was minimally used, occurring only once by a male speaker. The study finds that participants' close relationships and shared knowledge facilitated the frequent use of positive politeness and bald-on record strategies. Notably, male speakers were more polite, often using positive politeness, while female speakers were more direct and explicit, especially on sensitive topics. This research highlights the influence of social dynamics and cultural norms on politeness strategies in discussions about transgender issues.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze how Anastasia portrays themes of liberal feminism and individualism. It investigates how the protagonist’s journey embodies feminist ideals of self-discovery, resilience, and the defiance of gender expectations. Grounded in liberal feminist theory, which emphasizes personal autonomy and equality before the law (McMillan, 2009); this study employs qualitative descriptive methods to explore how Anastasia’s narrative reflects these principles. Themes such as identity formation, gender norms, and personal agency are analyzed through the protagonist’s experiences. The analysis reveals that Anastasia challenges traditional gender roles by portraying feminine traits—compassion, resilience, and emotional intelligence—as strengths rather than weaknesses. The protagonist’s journey from orphaned amnesiac to rediscovered princess illustrates themes of empowerment and self-determination within a feminist framework. The film’s depiction of Anastasia’s relationships and challenges underscores the broader feminist discourse on identity and societal expectations. By confronting external pressures and embracing her true self, Anastasia embodies the resilience and agency central to feminist ideals. Through its narrative complexity and thematic depth, Anastasia contributes meaningfully to feminist discourse. It celebrates personal growth; challenges gender stereotypes, and advocates for women’s empowerment. The study concludes with reflections on the enduring relevance of feminist themes in animated media and their impact on audiences.

Abstract

This research aimed to decode Filipino representations from the videos of Project Nightfall, a social media channel with millions of followers all over its social media platform that produces videos relative to society’s interest. The rising numbers of Vlogs associated with Pinoy contents produced by foreigners from different social media channels urged the study to work on identifying how Filipinos are represented in Vlogs from the point of view of these social media content creators. The study used Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Framework of Critical Discourse Analysis with three fundamental stages in the study of discourse: the Description or the study of the properties of text, the Interpretation of discursive practices, and the Explanation that deals with Social Practice Analysis. The research selected three videos from the Facebook Page of Project Nightfall. Relevant texts were extracted from the manual transcripts for the analysis. From the research findings, the text is observed to have produced description, assertion and affirmation in the most parts which demonstrates a social practice of promoting culture. There are few numbers of negative Filipino representations depicted from the text including how Filipinos are represented to be financially and emotionally struggling. Filipinos are seen as providers, and described short in height. On the other hand, Filipinos are represented to be selfless, compassionate, resourceful, respectful, expressive, optimistic, bubbly, culture-bound, have active lifestyle, have values of teamwork and spirit of community. Filipinos are also defined as artists, singers, and sports lover from the context of the videos selected.
