Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the function and realization of directive speech of female teachers in Indonesian language learning class XI SMA Negeri 1 Seputih Mataram Lampung Tengah in academic year 2016/2017. This research was conducted through descriptive qualitative method. Sources of data in this research were taken from the speeches of female teachers in Indonesian language learning class XI through observation and documentation. The data were analyzed by using heuristic analysis technique. The result of the research shows that the directive speech of female teachers based on communicative function which is more dominant found is the imperative directive speech, while the directive speech of female teachers based on the realization which is more dominant found is direct speech.Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan fungsi dan realisasi tindak tutur direktif guru perempuan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia kelas XI SMA Negeri 1 Seputih Mataram Kabupaten Lampung Tengah tahun pelajaran 2016/2017. Sejalan dengan tujuan penelitian, metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah tindak tutur guru perempuan pada saat pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia kelas XI. Kemudian, data dikumpulkan dengan teknik observasi, rekam dan catat. Teknik analisis data menggunakan analisis heuristik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tindak tutur direktif guru perempuan berdasarkan fungsi komunikatif yang lebih dominan ditemukan adalah tindak tutur direktif memerintah, sedangkan tindak tutur direktif guru perempuan berdasarkan realisasi tuturannya yang lebih dominan ditemukan adalah tindak tutur langsung.Kata kunci: tindak tutur direktif, guru perempuanDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/aksara/v18i2.pp100-112

Abstract

The assessment of students’ learning outcomes during COVID-19 pandemic has become a burnng issue among educators. The extreme diversion from face-to-face learning to emergency remote teaching resulted in the assessment being carried out remotely. This case study research is aimed to investigate how the assessment practices of students’ EFL learning outcomes during emergency remote teaching and to discover the challenges faced by the teachers in assessing students’ EFL learning outcomes. To obtain the data, interviews were conducted with two senior high school teachers. Both teachers are from different regions in Indonesia. From the data analysis, it was revealed some findings that the challenges faced by EFL teachers in assessing students’ learning outcomes are mainly related to the (1) academic dishonesty, followed by (2) deciding the appropriate tools or applications for assessing students’ outcomes and the last is (3) engaging students in the assessment process. Teachers’ creativity is regarded as critical in order to effectively assess students’ EFL learning outcomes.

Abstract

Poetry as a kind of literary holds many mysteries and deep meaning. It is not only a beautiful word, poetry is also a medium of expression and also conservation especially in literature. Poetry anthology Bersiap Menjadi Dongeng creation Mukti Sutarman Espe from Keluarga Penulis Kudus (KPK), the reader can find a lot of symbols and meanings and conservation elements of literature and also the Holy culture is very strong. The strength of these values makes the writer interested to study it. This research was conducted with the analysis of the inner structure.The sampling technique used purposive sampling or data collection techniques based on specific objectives. Data collection techniques used is to examine the document. Data analysis techniques used in this study are interwoven analytical techniques which include three components: data reduction, data presentation, and conclution data. The final result of this research is in the form of an inner structure analysis of some poems and cultural conservation values is very strong in the poetry anthology Bersiap menjadi Dongeng.

Abstract

In the context of cultural wisdom, it is no longer seen as hereditary heritage but cultural wisdom is the strength of the creative industry based on cultural wisdom. Students of the language and literature study program who have writing and literary skills are able to study and write cultural wisdom. With the ability to study and write local wisdom allows students as; entrepreneurship, creator, humanist, writer based on the strategy of cultural wisdom values. The research focus is the study and writing of Jambi Malay cultural wisdom with a literary journalism approach. Literary journalism is a feature-oriented creative writing skill based on facts in the field. To achieve this, the study and discussion refers to the practice of improving learning; Research and development; Classroom Action Research, and Project-Based Learning. The results of research on student abilities; write the title of 'good' level, write the intro at 'good' level, the type of intro written; storytelling, descriptive, and questions, writing the atmosphere of the story as a result of observation at the 'medium' level, writing the dialogue of the results of the investigation and reporting at the 'medium' level, (5) closing the story containing the message at the 'good' level, the type of message written; view of life, sincerity, and a call to action. Overall the ability to write knowledge of Malay culture is based on the 'good' range. Based on this the suggestions put forward; feature as a creative essay, very easy to develop by students as novice writers, so that they are interested in composing the potentials of local wisdom; data features on the basis of the results of field research through the process of observation, interviews, investigations and reporting. Based on the suggestions put forward, the literary journalism approach can be developed well in learning creative writing.Keyword: cultural wisdom, literary journalism

Abstract

In recent decades, cultural content analysis of EFL textbooks has received a wide attention in ELT pedagogy. This research aims at analyzing the cultural themes, especially “little c” and culture categories presented in an English textbook used by Junior High School students in Indonesia. This study was carried out using Xiao’s suggested themes for detecting “little c” that represent food, holiday, lifestyles, customs, values, hobbies, and gesture/body language. Besides, it also investigated the culture categories proposed by Cortazzi and Jin, namely source culture, target culture, and international culture. The result showed that the presentation of the source, target, and international culture are in an imbalance proportion. The textbook’s content mostly exposes target culture and source culture. Meanwhile, international culture was not exposed. Moreover, value and food dominated the cultural theme in the textbook. Meanwhile, lifestyle and customs are less exposed. Furthermore, three themes of “little c” (holiday, hobbies, and gestures) were not exposed at all. Due to the imbalance proportion of cultural content, the textbook developers should provide a more balanced proportion of cultural contents in terms of themes and categories to help learners gain more knowledge related to intercultural understanding. http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/aksara/v20i2.pp88-100

Abstract

Pergeseran makna adalah istilah yang menjelaskan tentang fenomena sebuah kata yang maknanya telah berbeda dari makna aslinya. Artikel ini membahas tentang pergeseran makna kata lucu yang maknanya sekarang ini sudah berbeda dengan makna leksikalnya dalam KBBI. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan pergeseran makna kata lucu yang ditemui pada media sosial Twitter. Kajian ini dilakukan menggunakan pendekatan semantik dengan teori perubahan makna. Penelitian ini berjenis deskriptif kualitatif sedangkan data yang dianalisis berbentuk kalimat yang di dalamnya terdapat kata lucu. Sumber data penelitian ini diambil dari Twitter. Selanjutnya data dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode agih dan teknik dasar bagi unsur langsung (BUL) . Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kata lucu telah mengalami pergeseran makna dari yang sebelumnya ‘menimbulkan tertawa’ menjadi ‘menyatakan kekaguman’ dan ‘menekankan hal ganjil’.Keywords: Semantik, Perubahan Makna, Kata Lucu.

Abstract

This study seeks to find out the effect of modified role play on students’ speaking achievement. There were 28 students involved in the research. The sample consisted of two classes which one group was taken to be experimental and the other to be a control group. The data obtained through the test were analyzed by using statistical analysis. The data were collected using pre and post-test. The pretest was administered at the start of the treatment, and again after 3 meetings of modified Role Play. In conducting the research, the researcher used a speaking test rubric to evaluate the students’ speaking performance which covered five components of speaking, such as fluency, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehensibility. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test scores of modified the role-play and compared to the original role play. The findings indicated that the students in the modified role-play had performed better in the post-test compared to the pre-test oral communication skills classes.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to know Students’ classroom interaction in English speaking at fourth semester in University of Graha Nusantara Padangsidimpuan; Students’ classroom interaction with lecturer in English speaking at four semester in University of Graha Nusantara, and to know the difficulties and effort to solve it of students’  classroom interaction in English speaking at on the fourth semester in University of Graha Nusantara Padangsidimpuan. This research used qualitative research with descriptive method. After collecting data, the researcher analyzed the data by using reduction, then devided the data to one unit with categorize the data. Afterwards, the researcher made interprestation and described about data to make a conclusion. The reseacher found phenomena Students’ classroom interaction in English speaking at four semester University of Graha Nusantara Padangsidimpuan was running well. Some of students could speak English in classroom. Some of them its means about 15 students could speak English to others. Students’ classroom interaction with lecturer in English speaking at fourth semester University of Graha Nusantara Padangsidimpuan was also running well. They could give feedback to lecturers’ respond. Then they used English for discussion, presentation, and asking to lecturers. The difficulties of students’ classroom interaction in English speaking were in lack of  vocabulary, mistakes pronunciation, low self confidence, less practice, and did not master English material. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/aksara/v19i2.pp98-113

Abstract

Sampar merupakan judul novel karya Albert Camus yang di dalamnya menunjukkan berbagai potret manusia yang bereaksi terhadap kemalangan karena mewabahnya penyakit sampar di kota Oran, Aljazair, koloni Perancis. Kota itu dilukiskan: kering, tiada pepohonan, tidak berkeistimewaan apa-apa. Dengan pelukisan itu, Camus merefleksikan kehidupan yang monoton, tanpa jiwa.. Wabah sampar telah mengakibatkan kesadaran manusia akan lingkungan dan kondisinya sendiri yang malang. Hal ini terpancar dari tiga tokoh novel tersebut, yaitu tokoh Rieux, Paneloux, dan Cottard. Semua tokoh yang dikaji menunjukkan keberadaan yang absurd. Mereka menghadapi keabsurditasan yang berbentuk penderitaan, keterasingan, kegagalan, dan kematian dengan cara yang berbeda sesuai dengan visinya. Orang-orang mulai menyadari arti kecemasan, kebingungan, dan kematian yang diakibatkan oleh penyakit, keterpisahan dengan sanak saudara, dan rasa keterkungkungan dalam kota yang tertutup. Kematian adalah lambang yang paling pasti. Kematian adalah misteri, sesuatu yang paling absurd.

Abstract

This research analyzes a corpus-based appraisal from the subsystem of attitude and graduation (force) with Kevin Kwan’s Rich People Problem and its Indonesian translated novel Masalah Orang Kaya as the main data. This study aims to see which type of attitude has the highest frequency, and whether or not there is a graduation change of the attitude in the translated novel. The method is descriptive qualitative, using appraisal theory, and AntPConc software. The result shows that all types of attitudes occur in the translated novel, and they are affect, graduation, and judgment. The most prominent attitude found in the excerpt is judgment with 29 in total, followed by affect with 21 in total, and appreciation with 18 in total. There are 16 types of judgment that change its graduation and 13 types of judgment do not. Out of 21 types of affect in the data, 7 changes in the graduation and 14 do not change. Lastly, out of 18 types of appreciation, 9 changes in graduation and the other 9 do not change. The novel shows that each character in the beginning of the story gives appreciation towards each other, in each situation, and materials mentioned in the story line.Penelitian membahas appraisal dari subsistem attitude dan graduation (force) berbasis korpus dengan data utama berupa novel bahasa Inggris berjudul Rich People Problem dan novel terjemahan bahasa Indonesia berjudul Masalah Orang Kaya. Melalui studi analisis wacana kritis berbasis korpus, penulis ingin melihat attitude yang terdapat pada novel terjemahan, jenis attitude yang memiliki frekuensi paling banyak, dan apakah terdapat perubahan graduation pada novel terjemahan. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif, menggunakan teori appraisal serta perangkat lunak AntPConc. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan semua jenis attitude, yakni affect, appreciation, dan judgment terdapat pada novel terjemahan. Frekuensi attitude yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah judgment sejumlah 29, diikuti dengan affect sejumlah 21, dan appreciation sejumlah 18. Dari hasil analisis, 16 judgment memiliki perubahan dari sisi graduation sedangkan 13 judgment tidak memiliki perubahan graduation. Dari 21 affect yang ditemukan, 7 affect memiliki perubahan graduation dan 14 affect tidak memiliki perubahan. Dari 18 appreciation, terdapat 9 appreciation yang memiliki perubahan, dan 9 appreciation yang tidak memiliki perubahan graduation. Novel menunjukkan di bahwa para di awal cerita, para tokoh saling memberikan penilaian terhadap tokoh lain, situasi, maupun suatu benda yang terdapat di dalam cerita.
