Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the Al-Miftah lil Ulum program at PPTQ Al-Mannan Tulungagung using the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) evaluation model. The Al-Miftah lil Ulum method, developed by Pondok Pesantren Sidogiri, has been widely adopted by various Islamic educational institutions as an innovative approach to learning classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning). A qualitative approach with a single case study design was employed in this research. Data were collected through participatory observation over three meetings, semi-structured interviews with 15 purposively selected informants consisting of the pesantren leader, program coordinator, teachers, students, and administrators, as well as documentation studies of archives and activity photographs. The Miles and Huberman interactive model was used for data analysis, encompassing data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that from the context aspect, this program is highly suitable for the needs of beginner students who mostly have not yet learned nahwu (Arabic grammar). From the input aspect, the program has certified teachers and complete teaching materials, though still constrained by limited learning facilities. From the process aspect, learning proceeds according to the six-stage standard procedure, albeit sometimes hindered by teachers' busy schedules. From the product aspect, the program achieved a 100% pass rate in the first volume with an average score of 82. This study concludes that the Al-Miftah lil Ulum program is effective for beginner students, while recommending improvements in infrastructure and scheduling. The CIPP model is suggested for adoption by other pesantren in evaluating their learning programs.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) are Islamic educational institutions characterized by the central role of the kyai (Islamic scholar) and the mosque as the spiritual and educational center. Established upon a well-structured system and value framework, these institutions strive to cultivate the character of the nation and its people, particularly exemplified by Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. The term pesantren carries diverse meanings, both individually and collectively, among Muslim communities. It is closely associated with teachers (guru ngaji) and students (santri) who engage in the study of the Qur'an, classical Islamic texts, social and natural sciences, as well as various forms of learning beyond the classroom. Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor has developed a distinctive concept and implementation in nurturing and shaping its community, encompassing not only students but also teachers and educational staff. This educational legacy has enabled Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor to preserve its educational system for nearly a century. The findings are expected to broaden perspectives on the common stereotypes surrounding the tirakat tradition of guru ngaji in Islamic boarding schools, particularly at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. The results of this study provide a descriptive and analytical account of the metaphysical spirit underlying the tirakat of guru ngaji at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. This spirit is manifested not only in religious practices but also in the teaching of science, the development of mental resilience and character, the cultivation of collective consciousness, and the formation of dedicated and resilient Muslim educators. This study is expected to broaden public understanding of Islamic boarding schools, demonstrating that they are not merely religious educational institutions but also centers for nurturing individuals of noble character who contribute significantly to society, the nation, and the state.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse how the tradition and education of Al-Qur'an calligraphy at the SAKAL Jombang Calligraphy Islamic Boarding School functions as a form of cultural resilience in the preservation of Islamic art amid modernity. The scope of this research focuses on the pesantren's adaptation strategies using Michael Ungar's social-ecological resilience theory framework. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a field research approach. Data was collected through observation, in-depth interviews with caregivers, students, and alumni, as well as documentation studies. The results of the study show that SAKAL develops cultural resilience through four of Ungar's principles: (1) Decentralisation, with the sanad system and the pesantren environment as the backbone of scientific transmission; (2) Complexity, through dynamic navigation between involvement in modern competition while maintaining a traditional scientific orientation; (3) Atypicality, with strategies such as restricting instant digital learning and adhering to classical texts, which are effective in maintaining authenticity; and (4) Cultural Relativity, where standards of success are measured through the regeneration of sanad, not individual achievements
