Abstract

This study deals with Karonese Language Shift of Young Generation. It employs qualitative research design with a case study. This study aims to describe: the reasons for Karonese shift into Indonesian language. The subjects were 20 young generations of Karonese, 10 young generations of intramarriage family and 10 young generations of intermarriage family. They were chosen from 10 young generations whose parents are Karonese father and mother and 10 young generations whose parents are Karonese father and Non Karonese mother. The ages range of the subjects were between 13-17 years old. The instruments used for this study were questionnaire and interview. The interview was used to obtain the reasons of language shift. The data were analyzed by Miles, Hubberman and Saldana’s data analysis. There are two reasons of Karonese young generations use Indonesian language, the first is status of Indonesian language, there are (20%) of young generations from intramarriage family answer this reason and the rest of (80%) use Indonesian language because of social success. There are (50 %) of Karonese young generations from intermarriage family use Indonesian language because of the status of the language. The rest (50%) of the young generations use Indonesian language because of social success.

Abstract

This research is aiming at  1) to know the existing phenomena of teaching and learning reading material of  English for Nursery Purposes, 2)  to  find out kinds  of reading materials of English for Nursery Purposes are needed by the students at STIKES Sari Mutiara,  and 3)  to find  out a task-based learning reading materials of English for Nursery Purposes design.  The research method used is research and development (R&D). The sources of the data are the students, the alumni, and the stakeholders whereas The targeted clients are the students of semester IV STKIES Sari Mutiara Medan. The instrument for collecting data are questionairre, documentation, and in depht interview. The data are analyzed by descriptive analysis.The results show  that 1) in general the teaching learning is not optimal yet, particularly the learning materials are not relevant to the students and stakeholders’ need even the adequacy and availability are relatively adequate and available. 2)  The students’ need in line with teaching learning reading is oriented in a student center learning, task activities, authentic reading materials, and strucutured essay test. and 3) the physical structure of learning materials consists of the following sections that is Preview, Getting Started, Orientation, Assessment, Related vocabulary Usages. Abstract

The aims of this study are to investigate linguistic features, to describe the discursive techniques and to describe social implications that are used in oriflame catalogue beauty product advertisements. This research was conducted by using qualitative research design. The data of this study were texts on oriflame beauty product advertisements. The data analyzed by using three dimensional nature of critical analysis as preceded by Fairclough. There are three dimensional frameworks of analysis that are description/ text analysis, interpretation/process and explanation/social. The findings are (1) there were 7 out of 8 kind of linguistic features were found in oriflame catalogue beauty product advertisements. the most dominant linguistic feature used in the advertisement is adjective, (2) there were 9 discursive techniques that found in the second level analysis, the most technique used in the advertisements is emotive word.Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Advertisement, Linguistic Feature, Discursive Technique,  Social Implication

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the formal affixes are acquired by the five year old Indonesian children and how the five year old male and female children acquired the formal affixes in Bahasa Indonesia. This study employed descriptive qualitative design. The data were the transcription of recorded observation and interview using audiovisual recorder in children interaction in doing their daily activities at home. The subjects were two males and females children age five years old who lived on Jalan Marelan VII, Medan. The data were analyzed by applying Interactive Model by Miles and Huberman (1994). The findings of this study revealed that, five year old children have acquired formal affixes namely; me-, di-, ber-, ke-, ter-, pe-, se-, -an, -kan, -i, ke-an, di-i, di-kan and per-an well. However there were some affixes that did not emerge in children conversation namely prefix  per- and circumfix pe-an and ber-an. The way five year old children acquired formal affixes in Bahasa Indonesia namely; the first, is influenced by their environment such as from their family, relatives, caregivers and neighbors and the second is from the external factor such as from song and television program. Moreover, male children dominantly used prefix di- while female children dominantly used suffixes –an and –i. Keywords: affixes; children; circumfix; prefixes; suffixes

Abstract

Writing skills is considered the most difficult skill. The students usually face many difficulties in exploring the ideas or even finding the appropriate words to what they want to write. In this research, the researcher focuses on giving teachers written feedback in teaching writing narrative texts to the eight graders of SMP Amiruddiniyah Rantau Prapat. Written feedback is taken to provide an interaction between students writing and the teacher. In this process a teacher read the students work and responds to it through some written comments. The subjects of the study were the students of Eight grades. There were forty students, twenty male and twenty female students. This study is descriptive qualitative. The instruments that are used by the researcher are observation checklist, field notes, and students written works. the researcher collected the data from three observations. The first observation, the writing task was given to check the understanding of the students in writing narrative text,but the teacher did not give feedback. In the second and third observations feedback were given. In the second observation, the writing task was done in groups. Meanwhile in the third observation, it was done individually. Abstract

This study deals with Javanese language shift in Balee Village, North Aceh. It aims to find out the factors of Javanese language shift into Acehnese language in Balee Village, North Aceh, the pattern of Javanese language shift and the reasons of Javanese language shift in Balee Village, North Aceh. The data were obtained from the family of Javanese living in Balee Village, North Aceh. The study employs qualitative research design with a single case study to get the understanding on this study. The subjects of this study were 10 families. The subjects were divided into two groups, namely parents and children. The findings showed that the shift of Javanese into Acehnese Language in Balee village, North Aceh was influenced by bilingualism, migration, economy, society, demography, institution, and attitudes. The Javanese language shift to Acehnese language occurred in the pattern of relationship between parents and children and among children. The shifts of Javanese to the Acehnese are mostly caused by social conflict. Keywords: language shift, Javanese, social conflict

Abstract

This study presents a research conducted on Experiential Function in Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China. The main objective was to describe the types and the dominant processes and Circumstances in Experiential Function in Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China. It presented a qualitative design dealing with quantifiable (numeric) mode. The source of data was taken from Experiential Function in Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China. The data were collected by applying documentary technique. The data analysis found out the findings indicating that there were 6 types of process used, they were 21 (22.11 %) Material Process, 39 (41.06 %) Mental Process, 28 (29.47 %) Relational Process, 0 (0.%) for Behavioral Process, 6 (6.36 %) Verbal Process, and 0 (0. %) Existential Process. It means that the dominant pattern of Process is Mental. Meanwhile, there are 7 patterns of Circumstances found in the Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China They are 0 (0 %) for Extent, 31 (32.63%) for Location, 13 (13.68%) for Manner, 5 (5.26%) for Cause, 5 (5.26 %) for Contingency, 0 (0 %) for Accompaniment, and 0 (0 %) for Role. It means that the dominant pattern of Circumstance is Location. It proves that the use of Process and Circumstance were related to the context of situation.Keywords: Experiantial Function, Jokowi’s speech, Process.

Abstract

English conversation is an important lesson for Senior High School students in order to face the globalization effects. Many students considered English conversation as a controversial lesson through their positive and negative attitudes toward it. This study aimed to investigate the types of attitudes of the Senior High School students in learning English conversation, to describe the realization of the attitudes of Senior High School students in learning English conversations, and to explain the reason of the attitude which Senior High School students realized in the ways they are. The subjects of this study were 20 students consisting 12 females and 8 males at the age of 16-18 years old. The data were collected by observations and interviews then were analyzed using Interactive Models. The result showed that positive and negative attitude in learning English conversations, five types of realizations, and the reasons of the students realized their attitudes i.e. the language loyalty, language pride,  and awareness of language norms. It was concluded that the students’ attitude varied as to positive and negative ones and realized in numerous manners affected by several factors. Keywords: Discourse Markers, Students Interactions, Nonformal Education, Conversation

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to investigate whether: (1) Students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using SPE is higher than students’ Achievement in Reading comprehension taught by using SQ4R, (2) Reading comprehension achievement of high learning motivation students is higher than reading achievement of low learning motivation students, and (3) There is significant interaction between teaching reading methods and students learning motivation on students reading comprehension achievement. An experimental research with factorial design 2x2 was used in this research. The first group was treated by using SPE and the second group was treated by using SQ4R. The learning motivation test was conducted for classifying the students upon the high learning motivation and the low learning motivation. The data were analyzed by applying Two-Way ANOVA. The result reveals that (1) students achievement in reading comprehension taught by using SQ4R is higher than that of taught by using SPE, (2) reading comprehension achievement of high learning motivation students is higher that reading achievement of low learning motivation students (3) There is significant interaction between teaching reading method and students learning motivation on students achievement in reading comprehension. Thus, teaching methods and students’ learning motivation significantly affect the students’ achievement in reading comprehension.Keywords: Motivation; Reading Comprehension; Teaching Reading Methods
