Abstract

This study observed Siladang language maintenance in Desa Sipapaga. The objectives of the study are (1) to examine the factors affecting language maintenance (2) to find out the strategies in maintaining the Siladang language and (3) to find out the reasons of the Siladang people in maintaining their language. The method of this study was descriptive qualitative research. The participants were 20 Siladang people who live in Desa Sipapaga were taken by purposive random sampling. The research results are as follows (1) There are seven factors affecting Siladang language maintenance in Desa Sipapaga such as, Ethnolinguistic vitality, living together and see each other frequently, use of language in family domain (intra and inter marriage family, use of language in neighbor domain, use of language in religion domain, use of language in workplace domain, and practice traditional ceremony, (2) In maintaining the Siladang language, the Siladang people conducted some strategies such as; family language policy, using Siladang language in their daily life frequently, the using of Siladang language in cultural activity like in wedding ceremony. (3) The reasons of the Siladang people maintain their language are; they were proud of being Siladang people and speak Siladang language, and speak Siladang language shows their identity as Siladang people.   Keywords: language maintenance, Siladang

Abstract

The paper describes the perspective of “Sambah Manyambah” Tradition”(literally ‘to greet a bride-groom up’) tradition and the attempts to analyze the euphemism such tradition which is mainly found in Minangnese regency and becomes an oral tradition that requires indigenous actors who have indigenous knowledge and expertise in speaking and in using indigenous language. The actors are considered customary actors (or pelakuadat) who, in this case, deliver custom speech or tribute (pasambahan or pidatoadat) which is aimed at declaring the intention and the purposes of the tradition. The research method is qualitative descriptive and attempted to obtain the necessary information from informants with observation techniques. The results show that since the actors’ existence is lack of appreciation today, the tradition undergoes significant changes; therefore, a model of this research will take the euphemism to the tradition has been created and is hopefully accepted by local communities. In here the researcher will get the types of euphemism used in ‘Sambah Manyambah’ Tradition for the tradition of Minangnese wedding ceremony. It is suggested that Pariaman should be getting the point of ‘Sambah Manyambah’ Tradition itself.Keywords: Euphemism, Sambah Manyambah, Wedding Ceremony

Abstract

 This study deals with the Experiential Function in Donald Trump’s Speech about Radical Islamic Terrorism. This study attempted to investigate the dominant elements of experiential function used in the speech, the realization and the reasons why the elements of experiential function are coded in the speech. This study was conducted by using qualitative design. The data in this study were the utterances of Donald Trump’s speech transcribed in written mode. The speech is campaign speech about Radical Islamic Terrorism on August 15th, 2016 at Youngstown State University. The research findings show that the dominant process found in the speech was material process, the dominant participant was actor and goal, and the dominant circumstance was location spatial and temporal. The processes were realized congruently and incongruently in metaphorical wording. Material process is dominantly used by Donald Trump about terrorism because he wanted to show the evil deeds done by terrorist and stimulate the listeners for future actions against terrorism, actor and goal participants show two confronting parties and circumstance location spatial and temporal show his point of view is authentic and objective. Keywords: Experiential Function, Speech, Terrorism

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study deals with Address System in one ethnic namely Gayonese Lut and Deret in Bener Meriah. The objective of this study is to describe the functions of address system Gayonese Lut and Deret in Bener Meriah. This study applied qualitative descriptive method. The techniques for collecting data were through giving the questionnaire sheets to the twelve subjects and record the conversation of interview with subjects and also the informants by taking the video directly. The result of this study found that Gayonese Lut has five functions address system namely Attract people attention (5.71), Show intimacy (28.58), Show politeness (7.14), Show power differential (20.00), and Reflect identity (38.57).  Gayonese Deret also has five functions of address system namely Attract people attention (10.00), Show intimacy (20.00), Show politeness (32.00), Show power differential (14.00), and Reflect identity (24.00). In Gayonese Lut, Reflect identity is the most function of address system while in Gayonese Deret is Show politeness. Keywords: Address System, Gayonese, Lut, Deret.

Abstract

The research deals with the occurrence of shift in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia. The objectives of the study were: (1) to find out the types of shifts in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia, (2) to describe how the shifts occur in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia, (3) to analyze the reasons why translation shifts occur Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were clauses which translated from Gayonese into Indonesian. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model.  This research was found that there were five types of translation shift. The type of structure shift was the dominant type. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) The category shifts in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia are 1) structure shift, 2) class shift, 3) unit shift, 4) reduplication word shift, and 5) double types of shift. (2) There were some ways of translation shift used in Translating Didong texts from Gayonese into Bahasa Indonesia, namely grammatical change occurred, change in different word class and change in ranks. (3) There were four reasons of using translation shifts are (1) Different language systems, (2) Grammatical structures of SL do not exist in TL, (3) Literal translation is grammatically possible but may not accord with natural usage in the TL (naturalness between SL and TL) and (4) replacing virtual gap by grammatical structure.Keywords: translation, translation shifts, Didong texts.

Abstract

This study focused on describing: (1) what phones are acquired by a two years old Mandailing child. (2) how a two years old Mandailing child acquires the phonology production.  (3) how the phonological  productions of the words acquired by a two years old Mandailing child. A qualitative research was applied. The findings indicated that kinds of word are noun, adjective, verb and adverb and the most aspect of phonology found in this study is noun. The subject acquired the words through interaction with his family and sometimes used body language when he talked with his parents. The phonological production of the words acquired by the subject with several processes out of the twelve processes. Based on the findings, there are some suggestions: (1) Parents have to guide his child in learning to communicate as good as possible in order to the child can communicate well and effectively with other people in his environment, (2) In order to make a good communication and conversation, it is suggested to make approach to the child’s behaviors and habitual, (3) If parents want their child can acquire words well, they have to introduce words well and also guide him to pronounce it every day when they talk with him. Abstract

This study investigated ideational grammatical metphor in Senior High School English Textbook. The objectives of the study were to identify what ideational grammatical metaphors were used in Senior High School English Textbooks. The research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative design. The data for this study were texts which were taken from Texts in Senior High School English Textbooks. The data were collected by selecting all the texts in the textbooks, then retyping the passage of the texts, editing the passage by breaking down the clauses into a data, and finally printing out the data. After the data had been collected, they were analyzed by some procedures; identifying the ideational grammatical metaphor in the data, rewording or unpacking the data into a congruent form, making comparisons between the two forms, classifying the classes of ideational grammatical metaphor and its function and analyzing the reason the ideational grammatical metaphor was used in Senior High School English Textbooks. The findings of the study showed that there were four ideational grammatical metaphor used in Senior High School English Textbook, namely the data of epithet = thing, event = thing, event = epithet and head = modifier.Keywords: Ideational Grammatical Metaphor, Senior High School English Textbooks,

Abstract

This study investigated code mixing in cross-cultural communication of Junior High School students of Al Kautsar. The objectives of the study namely: 1) To identify types of code-mixing that used in cross-cultural communication. 2) To find out the function of code-mixing used in cross-cultural communication. 3) To identify types of socio-cultural meaning that used in cross-cultural communication.4) To elaborate the main reasons of code-mixing used in cross-cultural communication. This research was conducted by descriptive qualitative research. The participants were 10 students in different ethnic. The data were students’ utterances in different ethnic that have taken from school environment. The findings showed that several types of code mixing, i.e. word insertion, phrase insertion, clause insertion, and tag mixing occured in cross-cultural communication. Word insertion is dominantly mixed by the students in daily conversation. The function of code mixing in cross-cultural communication namely as; 1) communication strategy, 2) expression personality or community, 3) style. And there were some types of socio-cultural meaning in cross-cultural communication, they are:1) a unique group solidarity, 2) a special register, 3) self esteem. And the main reasons of using code mixing in cross-cultural communication were: 1) being emphatic something (express solidarity. 2) interjection. 3) expressing group identity 4) and to soften or strengthen request or command. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims to describe the realization of intertextuality occurences in sari matua ceremony. This research is conducted qualitatively by applying technique analysis of Bazerman. The data are utterances which delivered by the speakers in the ceremony and transcribed into transcription. Sari Matua is one kind of death ceremony in batak toba culture and has been studied in other particular field of study. In this study, intertextuality occurrence are studied on oral discourse in Sari matua batak toba ceremony. Sari matua batak toba ceremony consisted of two sessions which are Martonggo Raja and  main ceremony and this study focuses on these two sessions. The result of this study shows that there were 50 specific data found from 82 specific data which included kinds of intertextuality namely qutotation, reference, and allusion. The realization of intertextuality occurences in sari matua Batak Toba ceremony is realized by some elements of intertextuality itself. The realization  Quotation is identified through the presence of lexical expressions such as mandok, manungkun, hatahononku, di dok, pinasihat. Reference is identified by seeing clause which reflected to, re-contextualized to dan re-accentuated to. Allusion is  identified by clause complex which referring the text to literature, historical art, story, person even place. The intertextuality occurences realized in sari matua Batak Toba ceremony because the text which quoted, referred to and alluded to from the past time can be reflected in ourlives in the present time. Key words:  Intertextuality, Oral Discourse, Batak Toba Ceremony, Sari Matua
