Abstract

This study critically examines the utilisation of daif hadith in Al-Qurtubi’s tafsir ahkam, with particular emphasis on the interpretation of Surah al-Fatihah. Al-Qurtubi’s tafsir holds a significant and authoritative position within the field of tafsir, especially in the domain of tafsir ahkam, which has become a key reference in both classical and contemporary studies of legal exegesis. The aim of this article is to identify the daif hadith employed by Al-Qurtubi in his explanation of Surah al-Fatihah, assess their authenticity, and analyse the extent to which the incorporation of daif hadith influences the accuracy and authority of Qur'anic interpretation. By scrutinising Al-Qurtubi’s methodology for evaluating the credibility of hadith, this study highlights the impact of using daif hadith on the authority of interpretation, particularly in the formulation of legal decisions. The research adopts a qualitative-descriptive methodology, with data collected through a literature review. The hadith were traced using the takhrij method, their authenticity assessed through naqd al-sanad (chain of transmission criticism), and a critical analysis of Surah al-Fatihah was conducted. The results reveal that Al-Qurtubi used five daif hadith out of a total of twenty-one in his interpretation of Surah al-Fatihah, ranging from mild to severe daif. The employment of daif hadith demonstrates methodological inconsistencies in Al-Qurtubi’s approach. Several of these daif hadith diverge from the core teachings of Islam, suggesting that their inclusion has compromised the accuracy of his methodology, diminished his authority, and undermined the credibility of his tafsir, particularly as a legal exegesis.

Abstract

This study examines the exegetical methodology of Hasan al-Turabi in al-Tafsīr al-Tawḥīdī, a work distinguished by its tawḥīdī (unificationist) and ḥarakī (activist) framework. Using content analysis and ideological critique, this study dissects its epistemological foundations and interpretive strategies. The findings reveal several key characteristics. First, the concept of tawḥīd is not merely interpreted theologically but is operationalized as an epistemological principle and methodological foundation for a socio-political reform project. Second, his method selectively combines traditional sources (tafsīr bi al-riwāyah) with a dominant rational reasoning (tafsīr bi al-dirāyah), aligning with his ideological framework. Third, its structure employs a tahlīlī (analytical-sequential) method yet with a strong thematic touch through its tripartite systematics: a preface (khulāṣah hadī al-sūrah), a structural summary (tartīl al-ma‘ānī), and a detailed contemporary analysis (‘umūm al-ma‘ānī). Fourth, its interpretive flow is analytic-inductive, moving from a holistic overview of the sūrah to specific meanings, thereby building an action-oriented systemic paradigm. However, the analysis also reveals several fundamental weaknesses. A heavy reliance on ra'y, while sidelining the corpus of Hadith, creates space for the instrumentalization of the text for ideological purposes. Furthermore, his work is criticized for its limited methodological originality and inconsistent application of his method, suggesting a potential selective bias. This study offers a structured methodological assessment, sharply highlighting the dynamics and limitations of the tafsīr ḥarakī genre within contemporary Islamic discourse.

Abstract

This paper examines the construction of an oral interpretation of the Quran on YouTube channels regarding religious moderation and the power-knowledge relationship that influences it. It is motivated by the reality of religious moderation discourse, as informed by studying the Qur’an and its interpretation. It is shared through social media platforms, such as YouTube, and is used to disseminate various perspectives. By employing a qualitative descriptive method and Michel Foucault’s critical discourse analysis of the oral interpretations of four prominent figures in Indonesian society, this article concludes that the discourse on religious moderation in oral interpretations on YouTube operates within a knowledge power network involving Muslim individuals, countries, media, and communities. The interpretations conveyed by the four figures tend to normalize the understanding of religious moderation as part of the broader teachings of Islam, aligning with the agendas of the government, organizations, and the media. The narrative of religious moderation is constructed through the selection of verses, especially QS al-Baqarah: 143, a textual-contextual combination of interpreting and delivery that emphasizes tolerance and anti-extremism. It is interpreted in the Indonesian context, specifically as religious moderation, characterized by individuals who are tolerant, fair, respectful of one another, and not overly inclined or excessively devoted to their religion. However, the dichotomy between "moderate" and “its opponent” in this interpretation reveals the existence of ideological limits imposed by dominant actors, such that the discourse of moderation is not always neutral but functions as a tool of social and political regulation.

Abstract

This research explores the potential of maqāṣidī exegesis as a framework for interpreting the Qur'an that can promote gender equality in contemporary Islamic discourse. Starting from the reality that classical exegesis often reflects patriarchal social constructs, this study offers an alternative approach that emphasizes the main objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah), such as justice, welfare, and the protection of human dignity. Using qualitative content analysis, comparative analysis, and a hermeneutic approach, this study examines several key verses related to gender—including polygamy, inheritance, testimony, and qiwāmah—through the lens of maqāṣidī. The research findings indicate that this approach not only reconstructs the understanding of gender relations in Islam in a more just and equitable manner but also challenges the patriarchal interpretative legacy that has been entrenched in the tradition of exegesis. The novelty of this study lies in the systematic application of maqāṣidī exegesis to gender issues comprehensively, not merely through a feminist approach, but by asserting that the values of gender justice are inherent in maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah itself. These findings provide a conceptual contribution to the development of value-based and ethical Islamic exegesis. They are relevant for reforming Islamic law to be more responsive to contemporary social dynamics.

Abstract

Water is a vital element that sustains life and maintains the balance of the global ecosystem. This article examines the correlation between the Earth’s water reservoirs and environmental preservation as indicated in the Qur’an. The study employs a semantic analysis method within the framework of iʿjāz lughawī (linguistic inimitability) and iʿjāz ʿilmī (scientific inimitability), focusing on key verses from Surah al-Ḥijr (15:22) and al-Mu’minūn (23:18–19), and is supported by an interdisciplinary literature review. The findings reveal that the term asqaynā refers to the process of water infiltration into the soil, while askannā denotes the mechanism of subterranean water storage. These terms represent a complex hydrological cycle, encompassing rainfall, infiltration, percolation, and plant absorption. This process supports photosynthesis, maintains soil moisture, and enhances ecological stability sustainably. The study concludes that the Qur’an not only conveys spiritual and moral teachings, but also contains scientific insights aligned with the principles of environmental sustainability. It contributes to the development of ecological Qur’anic exegesis rooted in integrating scientific knowledge and divine revelation.

Abstract

The narrative of Prophet Ismāʾīl’s sacrifice holds a central place in the exegetical tradition of the Qur’an, historically interpreted through literal and historical lenses by classical scholars. However, progressive Qur’anic hermeneutics provide a more contextual reading that resonates with the ethical and societal dynamics of contemporary life. This study revisits the story of Prophet Ismāʾīl’s sacrifice using a progressive exegetical approach by exploring the interpretations of three influential scholars: Muḥammad ‘Abduh, Muḥammad Ḥusain Ṭabaṭaba’ī, and Hamka. Employing a qualitative methodology and an extensive literature-based analysis, the study demonstrates that progressive interpretations do not merely critique literalism but emphasize deeper spiritual and ethical dimensions—particularly the concept of total submission (aslama) to God, the reinforcement of spiritual education within the family, and the exemplification of personal sacrifice for the collective good. The narrative is also interpreted as a symbolic model for the parent-child relationship in fostering communication, trust, and social piety. The findings affirm that progressive exegesis offers a constructive bridge between scriptural texts and contemporary contexts, enhancing the applicability and vitality of Qur’anic teachings in addressing modern spiritual, educational, and ethical challenges.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze how the Living Qur’an and Hadith approach is operationalized in the eco-pesantren at Al-Kamal Integrated Islamic Boarding School (PPTA), Blitar, East Java, Indonesia, and to uncover its contribution to environmental empowerment and the surrounding community. This research employs a qualitative field research method using the Living Qur’an-Hadith approach within the framework of socio-cultural studies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, with research subjects including pesantren leaders, eco-pesantren program managers, and students (santri). The findings reveal the following: first, the basic principles of the eco-pesantren at PPTA are rooted in ecological values found in selected Qur’anic verses (QS al-Baqarah [2]: 30; QS al-A‘rāf [7]: 56; QS al-Qaṣaṣ [28]: 77) and prophetic traditions that emphasize human vicegerency, the prohibition of environmental destruction, and cleanliness as part of faith. Second, these principles are implemented through sanitation programs (clean water provision, hygiene facilities, and a health post) and a waste bank system involving waste sorting and utilization of both organic and inorganic waste. Third, the eco-pesantren not only impacts the pesantren internally but also generates economic and social benefits for the surrounding community, such as utilizing food waste for livestock feed and generating income from plastic waste. This study demonstrates that the application of ecological principles from the Qur’an and Hadith through the eco-pesantren concept at PPTA has a significant impact on environmental awareness and community well-being, while enriching the study of the Qur’an and Hadith within the context of contextual social practices.

Abstract

Translating the Qur'an is a complex task that requires not only linguistic accuracy but also sensitivity to semantic and spiritual meanings. One of the major challenges in Qur'anic translation lies in rendering cognitive terms such as tafakkur, tadabbur, and ʿaql, which possess complex and multifaceted semantic dimensions. This study aims to identify the diagnostic and supplementary semantic features of these three terms using the Componential Analysis (CA) approach. In addition, it evaluates their lexical equivalents in two Indonesian and two English Qur'anic translations to assess semantic equivalence. The findings reveal that although the three terms share cognitive and contemplative features, each reflects distinct orientations and functions: tafakkur emphasizes exploratory thinking about observable phenomena; tadabbur involves deductive reflection on the implicit meanings of verses; and ʿaql denotes evaluative reasoning grounded in knowledge. The translation assessment indicates that the Hilali & Khan and Saheeh International versions provide the most semantically accurate renderings, whereas the Kemenag and Muhammad Thalib translations exhibit certain limitations. These results highlight the importance of a semantic-based approach in Qur'anic translation to preserve the depth and accuracy of the Qur'an's cognitive–spiritual message. This study contributes to the cross-linguistic understanding of the semantic nuances of Qur'anic cognitive terms and provides a methodological foundation for further research on meaning transfer and translation strategies in Qur'anic exegesis and translation studies.

Abstract

This study examines the formation of scholarly authority within the network of tahfiz pesantren through the Qur’anic sanad of KH Munawwar Sidayu in Gresik, which plays a pivotal role in preserving the tahfiz tradition. The research focuses on mapping the socio-intellectual and genealogical dynamics of the pesantren, as well as the interplay between knowledge, power, and epistemic legitimacy in a local context that has received limited academic attention. A qualitative approach with a genealogical method, enriched by the social history of pesantren, was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with caretakers, teachers, and students; participatory observation; and examination of pesantren archives, sanad documents, and historical literature. Interpretative-genealogical analysis, grounded in Michel Foucault’s theory of power/knowledge, revealed the mechanisms of authority distribution and knowledge legitimization. Findings indicate that the sanad network, kinship relations among kyai, and collaboration with alumni and community institutions create a structured and sustainable scholarly authority system. The sanad serves as a conduit for epistemic and moral legitimacy, familial ties reinforce socio-intellectual continuity, and alumni act as agents of knowledge dissemination. Engagement with governmental and societal institutions extends the pesantren’s influence, positioning it as both a center for knowledge production and reinforcement of Qur’anic tradition. This study contributes a genealogical analytical model of tahfiz pesantren networks, enriching scholarship on intellectual networks and the legitimacy of Qur’anic knowledge transmission in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the epistemological structure of Qirā’ah Mubādalah, an interpretive method formulated by Faqihuddin Abdul Kodir that has gained traction over the past five years, including its adoption within the KUPI Fatwa Methodology. Using qualitative library research—drawing on Faqih’s Qirā’ah Mubādalah as the primary source and theses, dissertations, and scholarly articles as secondary materials—the study maps foundational references, operational logic, and epistemic positioning that undergird its application. Findings indicate that Mubādalah rests on the apparatus of istinbāṭ al-ḥukm within a thematic fiqh framework, supported by maqāṣid (justice, public welfare) and a tawḥīdic ethical horizon (justice, wisdom, compassion, welfare), which together furnish transformative normative force and a three-step workflow. Yet the analysis also exposes methodological vulnerabilities: a blurred boundary between fiqh and tafsīr, the risk of “values preceding the text,” and thematic bias because explicit applications cluster around gender. In response, the article proposes a reordered operative sequence—first securing linguistic–historical meaning, then activating the ethical horizon for application—alongside deliberate cross-theme testing (ritual worship, transactions, environmental ethics, governance, criminal justice) and a clear epistemic positioning (fiqh analytic tool, tafsīr method, feminist hermeneutics, or feminist daʿwah praxis). The study’s contribution lies in clarifying Mubādalah’s epistemic frame and operational protocol, thereby strengthening methodological coherence, scholarly accountability, and social impact.
