Abstract

Background:Maxillary expansion uses mechanical forces to open the maxillary suture which causes inflammation and bone remodeling around the area. Stichopus hermanni is known to contain flavonoid, chondroitin sulfate, and saponin which is used to inhibit inflammatory process, increase bone metabolism and mineralization, and wound healing. Purpose: The aim of this experiment is to know the effect of Stichopus hermanni to bigonial width on maxillary suture remodeling expansion using cephalometric analysis. Materials and Methods: Experimental units used were 24 male Cavia cobaya divided into 4 groups (n=6). Group K(-) is negative control. Helical spring was applied and activated in the other 3 groups for 10 days. Group K(+) was given 2% NaCMC gel, both group P1 and P2 was given 3% Stichopus hermanni gel. Group P2 were also given retention period for 10 days after activation period. Cavia cobaya were then decapitated and observed for the bigonial width changes. The data was analyzed with One Way ANOVA test continued with LSD test. Results: The result of ANOVA test showed siginficant differences among the treatment groups p=0,000 (p<0,05). LSD test showed significant differences between group K(-) and K(+) (Sig. 0,005), K(-) and P1 (Sig. 0,001), and group K(-) and P2 (Sig. 0,000). Conclusion: 3% Stichopus hermanni gel increases bigonial width but not significant in remodeling process on maxillary suture expansion.

Abstract

Background: Heat cure acrylic and nylon thermoplastic valplast and lucitone-FRS brands are the three materials most often used as denture bases. Candida albicans is the dominant microorganism that can cause denture stomatitis. Cleaning denture can be done in two ways, namely the mechanical way with a toothbrush or an ultrasonic cleanser and a chemical method by immersing the denture into the cleaning solution. Chitosan solution is antibacterial and anti fungal which can inhibit the growth of Candida albicans colonies on heat cured acrylic plates, valplast and lucitone-FRS. Purpose: To determine the concentration of chitosan solution and the type of denture plate that most effectively inhibited the growth of Streptococcus mutans Candida albicans colonies on heat cured acrylic, valplast and lucitone-FRS plates. Materials and Methods: 21 heat cured acrylic plate samples, 21 valplast plate samples, 21 lucitone-FRS plate samples measuring 10x10x2 mm divided by 9 groups. Heat cured, valplast and lucitone-FRS acrylic plate samples were contaminated with Candida albicans then immersed using the concentration of 0.25%, 0.5% chitosan solution and sterile aquades as the control group with 90 minutes immersion time. The entire study sample was calculated using Candida albicans colonies on Sabourroud's Dextrose Agar media. Results: The Kruskall Wallis test showed a significant difference (p <0.05) in all treatment groups. Mann-Whitney showed a significant difference (p <0.05) in all groups in the Candida albicans study. Conclusion: Soaking the lucitone-FRS plate in 0.5% chitosan solution for 90 minutes was the most effective in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans colonies.

Abstract

In early 2010 there was a very rapid progress in the development of immunity to fungi, i.e the discovery of CLR. CLR is one of the PRR receptors found in immune cells that recognize the cell wall of fungi and then trigger a transduction signal that eventually provoke the production of various proinflamatory include IL1β, IL6, TNF α and induce polarization Th17. In the condition of infection the number of innate immune cells increases dramatically, lead to increasing of cytokines produced. Both cytokines and the cells that produce them enter the bloodstream. If there is unbalance level of pro and anti inflammatory cytokine, various inflammatory and/or autoimmune diseases can be occur. Unlike the focal concept infection, where the agent will cause disease if enters the blood vessels, through this concept a fungal infection at epithelium can lead to inflammatory diseases in other part of body without having to go through fungus

Abstract

Background : A common objective of anterior restorative dentistry is to establish anterior guidance between the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth to disclude the posterior teeth during protrusive mandibular movement. Fracture anterior teeth leads to psychological trauma, along with functional and esthetic debilitations. Healthy anterior teeth play an important role of protecting the posterior teeth during excursive mandibular movement. The contour and shape of the labial surface are important for esthetic purpose; the palatal surface morphology is critical for harmonious function. Premature contact in palatal surface restoration is considered as contributing factor to temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms. Purpose : Improve aesthetics and function of the patient's anterior teeth. Case : Male, 17 years old with poor aesthetic because of fracture anterior teeth 4 years ago. Case Management : Root canal treatment, treatment of root resorption, fiber post, custom post, indirect veener, zirconia crown and enameloplasty. Result : Better aesthetic and get the optimum function of his teeth.

Abstract

Background: Nursing bottle carries is a problematic condition in children. On one side, parents try to supply enough nutrition to their children, though on the other side this night- time bottle feeding habit might cause negative effect on the childrens dental health. Esthetic dental treatment on children have improved greatly over the past few years, as parents expect an almost-complete restoration of their child’s dental condition. The alternatives for pediatrics esthetic dental restoration may depend on the cooperativeness and habit of the child themselves, while also taking the child’s development into consideration. Aim: to report evaluation of aesthetic restoration on primary teeth. Case: A 4 year-old female child was presented by her parents, with damaged four anterior teeth, which made her uncomfortable especially on feeding due to the sharp edges. From history taking we found a night-time bottle-feeding habit, which usually occurred until patient was asleep. Case Management: restoration of the four primary incisive teeth was performed using a resin composite crown. Outcome of the treatment was evaluated until the primary teeth exfoliateand permanent teeth arise. Conclusion: cooperation between patient, parents, and dentist is important in the dental restorative treatment on paediatric patient. Moreover, a good communication with parents is encouraged, especially on follow-up schedule, treatment cost, success rate and possibility of treatment failure is also encouraged. Staged evaluation is needed due to the natural substitution of the primary teeth by permanent teeth, besides the development process of the jaws.

Abstract

Background: Oral habits include habit which are continuously done and has the potential to cause defects on teeth and perioral tissues.Lip sucking or biting habits are often found simultaneously or as a substitution of finger sucking. This habit may affect the labial and perioral structures. The habit may take several forms. Two extreme types are mild wetting of the lips with the tongue and pulling the lips into the mouth between the teeth. The lip bumper is a functional device that is used successfully to intercept developing dental and occlusal problems by allowing a proper development of the arch length and width for eruption of the permanent teeth.Purpose: This study aimed to re-validate the effectiveness of lip bumper application and habitual therapy in treating the bad habit of lip sucking. Case Report: The mother of a 9-year-old girl reported an upper front teeth protrusion and frequent occurrence of mouth ulcer. Further examination revealed that the patient had a habit of lip sucking. Case Management: Removable Lip Bumper is used to control lip habits such as lip sucking and to improve mentalis muscle hyperactivity. Such habit was treated with the use of a removable lip bumper and habitual therapy conducted by both parents. Constants reminder and encouragement from the parent to wear the lip bumper is one of the key success factors in this treatment. Conclusion: Five months after the initial application of a lip bumper and habitual therapy, the patient overcame the habit of lip sucking.
