Abstract

Certainty of climate information is essential for farmers in developing farming decisions but, climate forecasts produced by Climatology Station contain 30 per cent uncertainty. The fact that climatology station has carried out climate information dissemination to farmers in Lombok. However, many farmers experienced harvesting and planting failure due to climatic uncertainty. The objectives of this research are to describe the communication strategy implemented by the Kediri Climatology Station in communicating climate information to farmers on Lombok Island and to identify obstacles experienced in disseminating climate information. This research was conducted at the Kediri Climatology Station and on the island of Lombok using a descriptive method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis. The results show that the strategies implemented by the Kediri Climatology Station were strategies to increase the station's credibility through the improvement of data collection technique and analysis to minimize uncertainty, compiling and packaging messages so that farmers easily understand them, conducting direct dissemination through climate field school (SLI) and indirect using media, trying to understand the social and economic conditions of the communicants as well as utilization of feedback. However, there are obstacles faced by the Kediri Climatology Station in providing climate information namely: many extension agents are reluctant to convey climate information to farmers, climate change that affects forecast accuracy, difficulty convincing the public, and lack of funds to conduct Climate Field School, limited personnel, and language barriers.

Abstract

Trademarks are important for business establishments because they express the origin and quality of the companies, but it is not always easy to know and employ linguistic elements to craft good trademarks. Thus, to see the linguistic characteristics and strength of trademarks, the study has an objective to examine the trademarks of selected buffet restaurants at SM Mall of Asia, in Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines. The data were taken from nine buffet restaurants. The analysis was done by referring to Shuy’s (2002) linguistic tools and Butters’ (2010) framework. The findings reveal that the linguistic characteristics mainly used by the buffet restaurants were lexicography, phonetics, morphology, and semantics. In terms of lexicography, most trademarks have their etymological meaning and historical development in the dictionaries, except Charaptor and Yakimix, which are coined words. In phonetics, the trademarks have phonetic characteristics of 1-3 syllables. Then the morphological analysis shows that the trademarks consist of noun phrases, affixation, and word formation (clipping). In semantics, five trademarks do not have synonyms and polysemy; three have synonyms, and two have polysemy. In terms of strength, the trademarks were classified from the weak to the strongest as follows: Buffet 101 (descriptive); Cabalen, La Fiesta, Oceana (suggestive); Four Seasons, Vikings (arbitrary); and Charaptor, GEN, Yakimix (fanciful). The findings imply that business owners need to create their companies’ trademarks in arbitrary or fanciful categories.

Abstract

This study aims to provide an overview of the use of instructional media during online learning from vocational higher education students' perspectives. The education system in the vocational institution focuses on practical activities, so the use of instructional media during online learning faces various problems. Online learning is believed to be effective if there is a two-way interaction between lecturers and students in class using effective instructional media. This research was conducted to look into the students' perception of using online instructional media. With a sample of 181 students, this study employed a descriptive quantitative method. Data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires through Google Forms consisting of 17 questions with a Likert scale. In addition, semi-structured interviews with students were carried out for data triangulation. The results showed that the student perception of using instructional media during online learning is good, with an average score of 3.15 (Scale of 1- 4). The students perceived that instructional media during online learning increases their confidence and competence in learning, and their awareness of mastering a subject matter increased slightly, primarily in theoretical subjects. However, in practical classes, students still experienced problems due to the need for hands-on training. Therefore, the institution must provide a technological trend for lecturers and students, improve the teachers' competence in online instructional media, and improve software and equipment facilities that encourage and support the online learning process for more effective implementation.

Abstract

Madura is an area in East Java that has a negative stigma from the wider community. This is inseparable from the existence of Carok as a last resort to solve problems for the Madurese people. It is necessary to reconstruct through historiography to reduce the negative stigma. In some previous studies, it examined Carok which was reviewed from the law in Indonesia and the history of the Madurese people to the character of the Madurese people. However, the research has not explained the history of the conflict, especially Carok in Madura. Therefore, researchers use historical methods to explore Carok 's history in detail to know the development of Carok and its relevance to Settong Dara, the values of Carok, and Carok 's understanding of efforts with Settong Dara to reduce negative stigma in Madurese society. The research results obtained are that Carok was known during the Dutch colonial period. At that time, dutch people were moved to challenge the Dutch after the death of Sakera. However, the Dutch fought to make the image of celurit and Madura ugly. Before committing Carok, the two sides in the dispute must first meet the requirements. In the present time, this requirement has been ignored by some people, causing a shift in the meaning of Carok which causes a negative stigma. If examined further, various values in Carok will be known.

Abstract

Previous research has identified three social aspects that influence the dining experience: local food, foodscape, and the customer's lifestyle. However, little is known about the relationship between these aspects. This study seeks to address that gap by examining how the foodscape of a restaurant, the customer's lifestyle, and the presence of local food shape the dining experience. The study utilized qualitative research methods and conducted a case study on a restaurant located in a weekend tourist area in Bogor Regency. The case study focused on a cafe that received significant media coverage from 2021 to 2023. Through interviews and observations, it was found that the foodscape of a restaurant and the customer's lifestyle are interdependent in shaping the dining experience. The dining experience was seen as both a vacation and a working activity for customers. However, the study found that the foodscape did not have any relationship with the culture of the restaurant location and the type of food. Foodscape only dealt with the restaurant's ambience. This study suggests that further research is needed to reposition foodscape destinations in a locality context. The foodscape restaurant has developed an atmosphere separate from the local cultural context regarding the local food presentation.

Abstract

The importance of developing students' social cohesion attitudes cannot be separated from the heterogeneous conditions of Indonesian society. Cultural diversity, ethnicity, language, race, religion, and customs can cause differences in understanding and perspective on an object so this has the potential to cause divisions between members of the community. The purpose of this study was to determine the social cohesion ability of elementary school students from the aspect of belonging, mutual openness, recognition/award, and participation/goal. This type of research uses a quantitative descriptive approach. The data collection technique used a social cohesion questionnaire with a total sampling of 53 people as research subjects. The data analysis technique used the percentage formula P=f/N x 100%. The condition of students' social cohesion from the aspect of belonging, mutual openness, recognition/award, and participation/goal is in the high category. Therefore, students need to develop themselves through various study group activities, to be able to take valuable lessons for their future. Student study groups will help hone various student abilities, including a sense of belonging, mutual openness, recognition/awards, and participation goal.

Abstract

Fandom-based social movement, particularly charitable activism, has become increasingly widespread globally in today's digital era. The digital platform plays a massive role in the emergence of a new crowdfunding trend. This study aims to examine the potential and limitations of fandom-based charitable activism in Indonesia and to what extent this activism plays a role in empowering marginalized communities. This research employed a qualitative approach based on secondary data collected from several sources. This article finds that high loyalty and solidity positively correlate with the level of fan involvement in contributing to charitable activities. The youth's dominance and attachment to technology and social media potentially make this movement a broader and long-term impact. However, these activities tend to be sporadic and have not yet addressed the specific issues of marginalized communities. Also, the dependence of fans on the existence of their idols is a challenge for this movement.
