Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of group counseling services using the Actualizing Human Strengths technique in fostering student empathy. The approach used is a quantitative method with a one-group pretest-posttest Design. The research subjects consisted of six 7th-grade students from class VII-J at MTsN 2 Medan who were identified as having low levels of empathy based on the pretest results. Data were collected using an empathy scale questionnaire modified from the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, and the Paired Sample T-Test. The results revealed a significant increase in empathy scores after the intervention, with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that group counseling services employing the Actualizing Human Strengths technique effectively enhance empathy among students at MTsN 2 Medan.

Abstract

The need for a secure and efficient educational evaluation system in the digital era has been growing, especially with the increasing adoption of online exams. However, security and integrity issues remain significant challenges for educational institutions. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Quilgo in addressing these challenges through its personalized registration system and proctoring features. This research involved observations of several educational institutions implementing online exams using Quilgo. It also included interviews with educators and exam participants as the main data sources. The participants were teachers and students with direct experience using Quilgo in various exam settings. The study begins with data collection through direct observation of Quilgo's use in several educational institutions that have adopted online exams and interviews with educators and exam participants. The collected data include user experiences related to registration ease, technical obstacles, and the effectiveness of proctoring features in preventing cheating. The analysis used qualitative and quantitative approaches to assess the application’s efficiency and reliability across different exam scenarios. Moreover, the data analysis process was carried out using behaviorism theory (Skinner, 1963), which highlights the presence of stimuli, responses, and reinforcement—both positive and negative—in the learning evaluation process. The research results show that using personalized link-based registration in Quilgo facilitates registration and enhances security, especially when combined with domain-based email restrictions. Moreover, the proctoring feature that monitors the visual activities of exam participants proved effective in maintaining exam integrity, although challenges related to internet connectivity and device compatibility remain. Despite remaining challenges such as internet connectivity and device compatibility, the results imply that Quilgo has the potential to support more trustworthy and effective online examinations in educational settings.

Abstract

Adolescence is a critical phase in identity formation, which is strongly influenced by interpersonal interactions, including relationships with parents. The absence of a father figure can lead to emotional and social voids in adolescents, often resulting in feelings of worthlessness and the emergence of insecure behaviour. To evaluate the effectiveness of expressive writing in group counselling for reducing insecure behaviour among fatherless students in Grade 10 Computer and Network Engineering students at SMK Mandiri. This research employed a quantitative method with a pre-experimental one-group Pre-Test and post-test design and a purposive sampling technique. A total of 8 fatherless students who exhibited high levels of insecurity were selected as participants. Data were collected using validated fatherless and insecure behaviour scales. The results of the study, based on the paired sample t-test analysis, showed a significant value for Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 < 0.05. These findings indicate that the expressive writing technique in group counselling is effective in reducing insecure behaviour among fatherless students.

Abstract

Students with a high level of self-openness are generally more capable of managing emotions and can formulate solutions to various problems faced. Self-openness includes the ability of individuals to know themselves deeply, which is reflected in the ability to convey information about themselves to others and the readiness to accept new perspectives or assessments about themselves. Students with good self-openness also tend to solve problems more effectively because they are willing to receive help and social support from their environment. In this case, self-openness allows a person to express the emotional burden to the other party, so that the pressure felt is not borne by oneself and feels lighter. The concept of self-disclosure focuses on sharing personal information, including biographical, thought, and emotional aspects previously unknown to others. In practice, self-openness includes delivering messages accompanied by verbal and non-verbal feedback that contributes to forming and maintaining the quality of interpersonal relationships. This research aims to increase self-openness in students of the 2022 batch of the Islamic Education Counselling Study Program at the State Islamic University of Medan. This study uses a quasi-experimental design of a group pre-test and post-test with a quantitative approach. Sampling was carried out purposively, and data were collected through the distribution of questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out using non-parametric statistical tests and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, which resulted in an Asymp value. Sig was 0.042 (p < 0.05). These results indicate a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores. Thus, it can be concluded that applying cyber counselling services with reframing techniques can increase students' self-openness.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse librarian service management in increasing students' reading interest at SDN 22 Panai Hulu. The research was motivated by the low level of reading interest among elementary school students, which is influenced by several factors such as limited access to engaging reading materials and the growing impact of digital distractions, particularly social media. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study involved eight purposively selected participants, including the school principal, librarian, administrative staff, and students. Data were collected through interviews and observations, then analysed using Miles and Huberman’s model, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that optimising library functions, creating a comfortable and engaging reading environment, and addressing literacy challenges in the digital era are critical strategies in fostering students' reading interest. Librarians play a proactive role in curating relevant books and organising literacy programs that appeal to students. The study concludes that effective librarian service management can significantly improve reading motivation, and school libraries must continue adapting to technological advancements to fulfil the evolving literacy needs of students.

Abstract

This study explores the role of Driving Teachers (Guru Penggerak) in advancing innovative work behavior among educators within the context of Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar (Freedom to Learn) policy. Employing a qualitative approach through literature review, this paper synthesizes insights from policy documents, scholarly publications, and training frameworks to understand how teacher leadership, reflective practice, and technological adaptation contribute to educational transformation. The review highlights that Driving Teachers act not only as classroom facilitators but also as mentors, collaborators, and change agents within professional learning communities. Their ability to foster student-centered, inclusive, and contextually relevant instruction is central to the success of Merdeka Belajar. The analysis also identifies challenges such as policy-practice gaps, limited institutional support, and the need for sustained professional development. This study offers practical implications for education policymakers, school leaders, and teacher educators in enhancing teacher capacity and system-wide innovation. It also contributes to the academic discourse on teacher agency and reform in emerging education systems.

Abstract

This study investigates the practices of curriculum management in Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic Senior High School) within two Islamic boarding schools in Batu Bara Regency, namely, Jabal Hindi and Al-Mukhlishin. These institutions were selected due to their strong commitment to integrating academic excellence with character education. Using a qualitative approach with a multi-site study design, the research explores in depth the curriculum planning, implementation, and evaluation processes within the unique cultural and religious setting of Islamic boarding schools. Special attention is given to how character values rooted in Islamic teachings are integrated into both formal classroom instruction and non-formal learning activities. The study examines the organizational and instructional strategies adopted by each school and the roles of key stakeholders, including principals, teachers, kyai (spiritual leaders), administrators, and students. It identifies various supporting factors that contribute to effectively implementing a character-based curriculum, such as visionary leadership, a conducive learning environment, teacher professionalism, and a strong institutional culture. At the same time, it highlights several inhibiting factors, including limited infrastructure, diverse student backgrounds, and challenges related to digital media exposure that may conflict with Islamic values. In addition, this research uncovers several innovative practices the schools use to strengthen character education, including project-based learning, thematic integration across subjects, spiritual mentoring, and digital tools such as e-portfolios to monitor student progress.

Abstract

The declining cooperation spirit among students is a significant concern in the effort to shape the character of the younger generation. Character education, particularly through the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Program, is crucial to instill Pancasila values from an early age. This study aims to explore the character-strengthening strategy of the Pancasila Student Profile at Darul Mustafa Elementary School, Medan, focusing on implementing the value of cooperation. Using a case study approach, this qualitative research used in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation studies as data collection techniques. The results show that Darul Mustafa Elementary School implements a holistic and integrated strategy. The values of the Pancasila Student Profile, including cooperation, independence, critical thinking, creativity, global diversity, and faith and piety, are implemented through integration in teaching and learning activities in every subject and school cultural habits (e.g., class duty, deliberation, appreciation). Outside the classroom, the application of these values is reinforced through routine activities such as "Clean Saturday" and congregational worship. Teachers act as facilitators and role models, guiding students in collaboration and conflict resolution. The school supports teachers through ongoing training and has policies encouraging the creative integration of cooperative values. Key challenges include curriculum density, student diversity, consistent value instillation, and support from home. Despite this, the school continues to strive through forums to share good practices among teachers and other adaptive strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of group counseling services using positive self-talk techniques to reduce phubbing behavior among junior high school students. This research employs a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The research participants consisted of 8 students from class VIII-7 of SMP Negeri 1 Bilah Hulu with high phubbing scores based on pretest results. The intervention was carried out through 4 group counseling sessions for 45 minutes per session. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test analysis showed that all participants experienced a significant decrease in phubbing behavior scores, with a Z value of -2.536 and an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) significance of 0.011 (p < 0.05). All data fell into the category of negative ranks, meaning no participants had scores that remained the same or increased. The results of this study indicate that group counseling services using positive self-talk techniques have been proven to be very effective in reducing phubbing behavior among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Bilah Hulu. The positive self-talk technique can help participants increase self-awareness of their phubbing habits, manage the urge to misuse smartphones, and improve direct communication skills with friends or family. Therefore, group counseling services with positive self-talk techniques are recommended for guidance teachers as an optimal and sustainable intervention strategy to reduce phubbing and improve self-control and the quality of students' social interactions in the digital era.
