Abstract

This title describes an activity (such as a seminar, workshop, or presentation) aimed at disseminating information (socialization) about an innovation in the field of construction materials. Many small-scale construction practitioners, craftsmen, or the general public still use conventional concrete mixing methods (only cement, sand, gravel, water). They do not understand that the addition of additives can significantly change the properties of concrete. Fly Ash (fly ash from coal combustion) and Silica Fume (residual silicon metal production) are industrial wastes that are abundantly produced. If not utilized, these materials often become environmental pollutants. In the field, this waste is often considered useless, even though it has high pozzolanic properties. Conventional concrete often has quite large micropores, making it susceptible to water seepage and cracking over time. Without additives, it is difficult to achieve high-quality concrete or watertight concrete at the greatest cost efficiency. In the field, cement use is often wasteful. Replacing some cement with Fly Ash or Silica Fume is a global solution that has not been widely implemented at the local/community level. The main objective of this activity is to bridge modern concrete technology with its applications in society to create better and more sustainable construction. The main focus of innovation is the use of two specific materials: Silica Fume and Fly Ash. These two materials—often byproducts or waste from other industries—are presented as additives mixed into concrete.

Abstract

The increasing use of concrete in infrastructure development has led to a growing demand for natural aggregates, particularly gravel as coarse aggregate. This condition requires the introduction of environmentally friendly alternative materials based on local resources. Coconut shell is an organic waste commonly found in communities, yet its practical use as a construction material remains limited. This community service activity aims to improve participants’ knowledge and basic skills in utilizing coconut shell as a substitute for coarse aggregate in environmentally friendly concrete mixtures. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method through socialization, demonstration, simple practice, observation, documentation, discussion, and evaluation of participants’ understanding. The data were analyzed descriptively to explain the implementation process, participants’ responses, and changes in their understanding of coconut shell waste utilization. The results show that participants gained knowledge about the concept of green concrete, the function of coarse aggregate in concrete mixtures, the initial processing stages of coconut shell, and the potential of local waste as an alternative material for simple construction applications. The implication of this activity is the improvement of community awareness regarding waste utilization and the importance of sustainable construction materials. The originality of this activity lies in its educational and practical approach to introducing coconut shell as a coarse aggregate substitute through direct socialization and hands-on practice with the community.

Abstract

Eggshell waste is an organic waste commonly generated from households, school canteens, restaurants, and food industries, yet its utilization remains limited. Eggshells contain calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), which has the potential to be used as a partial cement substitute in environmentally friendly construction materials. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of students at SMK Negeri 4 Kota Tangerang in utilizing eggshell waste as a mixture material for eco-concrete or eco-paving block production. The implementation method used a participatory approach, including preliminary observation, socialization of green technology concepts, training in processing eggshells into powder, product-making demonstrations, hands-on practice, discussion, documentation, and activity evaluation. The activity data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively based on observation results, participant responses, documentation, and evaluation of participants’ understanding. The results show that participants gained knowledge about green technology, organic waste management, eggshell processing stages, and the potential of eggshell powder as an alternative material for non-structural construction products. This activity contributes to increasing environmental awareness and strengthening students’ practical skills in processing waste into value-added materials. The originality of this activity lies in the integration of environmental education, appropriate technology, and practice-based learning in introducing eggshell powder-based eco-paving block innovation within vocational education.
