Abstract

Maternal nutrition intake, as well as nutritional status, influence breast milk production and nutrient content. To reduce stunting, the GAS KIPAS Stunting Program (Gerakan Anak Sehat – Kolaborasi Inklusif Pengusaha Indonesia Atasi Stunting) provided high-nutrient supplementary foods for lactating mothers. This program was implemented in several priority locations. This study analyzed the associations between contribution and the adequacy levels of energy and nutrients from supplementary foods with perceived breast milk sufficiency. Secondary data were obtained from the 2023 GAS KIPAS Stunting Program. This study used a one-group pretest–posttest pre-experimental design without a control group. Nutritional intake of supplementary foods was obtained using the Comstock method. Statistical analyses included the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Spearman's rank correlation. The results showed no significant association between the energy and nutrient contribution of supplementary foods and perceived breast milk sufficiency. However, calcium adequacy level showed a significant positive correlation (r=0.38; p=0.039). During lactation, mothers require increased micronutrient intake to support maternal health and infant development. Conclusion: Providing supplementary foods for lactating mothers does not directly affect mothers’ perceptions. These findings suggest that a larger sample size, measurement of milk production volume, and a 24-hour food recall may be needed to optimize intervention outcomes in supporting exclusive breastfeeding as a stunting prevention

Abstract

Inadequate breakfast intake and malnutrition remain significant public health concerns among school-aged children in Indonesia, particularly in regions with a high Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU). To address this, the National Food Agency (BAPANAS) implemented the GENIUS program (Gerakan Edukasi dan Pemberian Pangan Bergizi untuk Siswa), which integrates nutrition education with the provision of standardized nutritious snacks. This study aims to analyze the impact of the GENIUS program on breakfast adequacy and nutritional status among elementary school students in ten Indonesian provinces with PoU exceeding 5%. A pre-experimental pre–post study design was employed, involving 4,953 students in grades 4-6. The intervention consisted of 20 nutrition education sessions and the daily provision of standardized snacks (250–300 kcal per serving) and UHT milk over a two-month period. Breakfast adequacy was assessed using 24-hour breakfast recalls. Snack compliance was also monitored daily. The intervention led to significant improvements in breakfast nutrient intake (p < 0.05). Mean energy intake increased from 141.9 kcal to 393.5 kcal, protein from 4.0 g to 11.5 g, fat from 5.6 g to 14.9 g, and carbohydrates from 17.7 g to 48.9 g. Substantial gains were also observed for key micronutrients, including calcium, phosphorus, and iron . Despite these dietary improvements, BMI-for-age z-scores showed no meaningful change (-0.2 ± 1.4 at baseline vs. -0.2 ± 1.5 at endline), consistent with the short duration of the intervention. Snack compliance was notably high, with 93.5% of students achieving high adherence (≥70%). The GENIUS program effectively enhanced the quality and adequacy of breakfast among students in food-insecure regions. While the two-month duration was sufficient to improve nutrient intake, it was inadequate to produce measurable changes in nutritional status. Future programs should consider longer implementation periods and strengthened school-family engagement to support sustained improvements in growth outcomes

Abstract

Genetic variations, such as in the CD36 gene (rs1761667), may influence fat perception and dietary patterns, contributing to obesity. This cross-sectional study involved 87 office workers who underwent genotyping for cd36 rs1761667, sensory testing for oleic acid perception threshold, and assessments of body composition, physical activity, and dietary intake. No direct association was found between the cd36 rs1761667 genotype and the fatty acid perception threshold (p > 0.05). However, stratified analyses revealed that men carrying the A allele (GA/AA, n=23) had a higher body fat percentage compared to those with the GG genotype (n=11). In women, GA/AA carriers consumed more protein, while GG carriers derived a higher proportion of energy from carbohydrates. Among overweight individuals, GG carriers reported higher carbohydrate intake than A allele carriers (p=0.026). These findings suggest that while cd36 rs1761667 may not be a primary determinant of fat taste sensitivity in this cohort, it may contribute modestly to body fat composition and dietary behaviors through interactions with gender and BMI status.

Abstract

The risk of degenerative diseases, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels, can occur at any age. This study aims to explore the relationship between several modifiable factors and blood pressure and cholesterol levels in adolescents. The survey was conducted in one of the Islamic schools in a densely populated area in Palu City using a cross-sectional study design with a simple random sampling technique on 100 respondents aged 15–18 years. Dietary and habitual intake as well as physical activity were collected through a 2x24-hour food recall questionnaire, a qualitative food frequency questionnaire, and an IPAQ questionnaire. Blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels were measured using a digital tension meter and easy touch GCU, respectively. Results indicated that 41 percent of adolescents had elevated blood pressure (>120/80 mmHg)  and 42 percent had high cholesterol levels (≥200 mg/dl), with an average systolic blood pressure of 121 mmHg and cholesterol levels of 199 mg/dL. Only sodium was significantly associated with blood pressure (p = 0.02), and no factors were significantly associated with cholesterol levels after multivariate analysis by including other variables: fat intake, potassium intake, fried and fast-food eating habits, physical activity, and gender (p > 0.05). Further exploration should include additional dietary factors such as saturated fat intake and overall dietary patterns, as well as psychosocial, and environmental influences to help design appropriate nutritional behavior change interventions for adolescents.

Abstract

Wound healing involves complex biological processes influenced by inflammation and tissue regeneration, where excessive interleukin-1 (IL-1) activity can delay recovery, while platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) plays a pivotal role in fibroblast proliferation and collagen deposition. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of topical Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) extract cream on IL-1 levels and PDGF expression in incised skin tissue. A post-test only control group design was conducted using 30 male Wistar rats randomly allocated into five groups: healthy control, negative control with basic cream, positive control with povidone iodine, treatment with 15% Noni cream, and treatment with 30% Noni cream. Incised wounds were created on the dorsal skin and treated once daily for seven days, followed by analysis of IL-1 using ELISA and PDGF expression using RT-qPCR. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences among groups (p=0.088 for IL-1; p=0.056 for PDGF), yet descriptive results revealed lower IL-1 levels in the 30% Noni group and higher PDGF expression in the 15% group, while povidone iodine produced the least favorable outcomes. These findings suggest a dose-dependent dual action of Noni extract cream, with the 30% formulation tending to attenuate inflammation and the 15% formulation enhancing regenerative activity.  These findings descriptively showed the lowest IL-1 levels, although the difference was not statistically significant. Within the limitations of this study, topical Noni extract cream demonstrates potential as a safe and natural adjunctive therapy for wound management, warranting further investigation with larger sample sizes, extended observation periods, and histopathological confirmation

Abstract

The kidneys play a critical role in maintaining fluid homeostasis, and suboptimal hydration may lead to morphological alterations detectable via imaging. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between hydration status and various renal ultrasonographic parameters. An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted with 30 healthy radiology students selected through purposive sampling. Hydration status was evaluated using the Perceived Urine-Richness Index (PURI) based on morning urine color. Renal ultrasound examinations were performed to assess kidney size, parenchymal echogenicity, corticomedullary differentiation, and resistive index. Data were statistically analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a significance threshold of p<0.05. The assessment revealed that 76.7% of participants had low to very low hydration levels. Statistical analysis demonstrated that parenchymal echogenicity was the only parameter significantly correlated with hydration status (p=0.001 for the right kidney; p=0.004 for the left kidney). Other ultrasonographic markers, including kidney length, cortical thickness, and resistive index (RI), showed no significant association with hydration levels. Hydration status is significantly associated with changes in renal parenchymal echogenicity, identifying it as a sensitive, non-invasive marker for early renal stress and subclinical morphological changes. These findings underscore the necessity of maintaining adequate fluid intake to preserve renal structural integrity as visualized through ultrasonography.

Abstract

Stunting in children remains a priority nutrition problem in Indonesia. Household food security and individual dietary diversity are presumed to play important roles in the nutritional status of children under five. This study aims to determine the association between individual dietary diversity and household food security with the nutritional status of children aged 12–59 months in the Tamalanrea Health Center area, Makassar. This quantitative, cross-sectional study involved 81 children aged 12-59 months, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection included measurement of nutritional status using the height-for-age indicator, household food security using the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS), and individual dietary diversity using the Individual Dietary Diversity Score (IDDS). Data analysis was performed univariately and bivariately using the chi-square test. The prevalence of stunting was 28.4% among the total research subjects. Household food security was significantly associated with children's nutritional status, as indicated by H/A (p=0.019), with children from food-insecure households having a 3.4 times greater risk of stunting (OR=3.429; 95% CI: 1.242-9.464). Conversely, individual dietary diversity did not show a significant relationship with children's nutritional status (p=0.424). Consumption of legumes and nuts was very low (6.17%), and consumption of vitamin A-rich fruits and vegetables was below 50%. Household food security is a more determinative factor in children's nutritional status than individual dietary diversity. Stunting prevention interventions need to focus on improving household economic access to food through multisectoral approaches

Abstract

This study evaluated the efficacy of a natural hand sanitizer derived from pineapple core extract as an alternative to alcohol-based agents for reducing bacterial contamination and infection risk during diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) care. Using a true experimental design, the researchers conducted microbiological assessments of 16 nurse hand swabs and clinical observations of 43 DFU patients between February and April 2025. Microscopic results revealed a significant reduction in bacterial presence: only 18.75% of swabs tested positive for gram-positive cocci with the pineapple-based sanitizer, compared to 68.75% in the control group. Furthermore, clinical findings indicated that 76.74% of patients remained infection-free following wound care procedures employing the extract. The study concludes that pineapple core extract possesses potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, largely attributed to the enzyme bromelain, making it a viable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective alternative for infection control in specialized wound care settings

Abstract

Primary dysmenorrhea is a common gynecological complaint among adolescents, often characterized by lower abdominal pain.  Lower abdominal pain typically occurs during or before menstruation and is occasionally accompanied by weakness, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.  Gingerol, shagaol, and zingerol, which are found in red ginger decoction, work to inhibit the prostaglandin hormone that causes pain.  The purpose of this study is to find out how much red ginger decoction (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum) can help teenage females at SMPN 1 Pariaman experience less severe primary menstrual pain. This quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design included 30 adolescents (15 per group) selected via purposive sampling. The data collection tool was the NRS (Numeric Rating Score) observation sheet. utilizing the Mann-Whitney test to analyze data.  According to univariate analysis, the intervention group's pain decreased from moderate (60%) to mild (66.7%), while the control group's pain did not reduce. The intervention group exhibited a reduction in mean pain scores, with a post-intervention mean rank of 9.33 compared to the control group's mean rank of 21.67 (p < 0.05). The results showed a statistically significant difference between menstrual pain intensity in the intervention and control groups. This means that administering red ginger decoction significantly reduced menstrual pain intensity compared to the untreated group. The findings indicate that red ginger decoction may be an effective non-pharmacological option for managing primary dysmenorrhea in adolescents

Abstract

Screening data from 412 toddlers in the Tlogosari Wetan Community Health Center area in 2024 revealed a 9.7% prevalence of wasting, with 45% of cases occurring in children aged 12–23 months. Furthermore, 47.5% of toddlers in local supplementary feeding programs did not consume their full portions, primarily due to limited flavor variety and poor taste acceptability. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the nutritional adequacy, sensory acceptability, and cost feasibility of local snack-based complementary foods (CF) for toddlers aged 12–23 months. A five-stage Research and Development (R&D) design was employed, encompassing preliminary research, planning, product development, expert testing, and field testing. Sensory evaluation was conducted by six expert panelists using hedonic and hedonic quality tests. Field trials involved 26 toddlers to assess acceptance using the Comstock method for food residue analysis. Data were analyzed using Repeated Measures ANOVA and Fisher’s Exact tests. Six CF menus were successfully developed, all meeting national nutritional standards, with an energy content of 229–275 kcal, protein 9–11.3 g, fat 11.2–17.2 g, and a protein-energy ratio (PER) of 13.8–16.4%. The "Finger Rice Stick & Tempe Pudding" menu achieved the highest hedonic score for texture and overall preference (p = 0.009). Toddler acceptance reached 87.2%, with intake levels ranging from 58.9% to 81.3% for energy and protein. Cost analysis indicated the products were affordable, with production costs ranging from IDR 4,330 to IDR 8,417 per menu. The developed local snack-based complementary foods are nutritionally adequate, organoleptically acceptable, and economically feasible. These findings suggest their potential for integration into community-level nutrition programs to support stunting and wasting prevention efforts
