Abstract

Despite the growing number of English translations of the Qur'an, persistent linguistic, semantic, rhetorical, and theological challenges continue to limit accurate comprehension for non-Arabic readers. Existing studies largely address these challenges descriptively or through comparative translation analysis, yet they seldom explore how recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly reasoning-based Large Language Models (LLMs), can systematically respond to the multidimensional complexity of Qur'anic language. This gap becomes critical in light of semantic shifts, polysemy, phonological symbolism, rhetorical devices, and doctrinal diversity that conventional translation methods struggle to accommodate. This study employs a qualitative-analytical approach grounded in Qur'anic linguistics, translation studies, and computational linguistics. It critically examines representative examples from English Qur'an translations to identify recurrent translation challenges, including lexical asymmetry, rhetorical loss, semantic ambiguity, and theological bias. Building on these findings, the paper proposes a conceptual AI framework that integrates multimodal embeddings, knowledge graphs, Qur'anic phonology, classical exegesis, theological schools, and historical context (Asbāb al-Nuzul), supported by explainable and anti-hallucination AI mechanisms. The results demonstrate that AI-assisted frameworks, when guided by authoritative Islamic knowledge sources and transparent reasoning models, have the potential to significantly enhance translation accuracy, semantic depth, and rhetorical sensitivity. Rather than replacing human scholarship, AI is positioned as an augmentative tool that bridges linguistic gaps while preserving interpretive plurality. The international impact of this research lies in its contribution to global Qur'anic studies, interfaith understanding, and ethical AI development. By proposing a multidisciplinary, culturally sensitive AI model, this study offers a scalable pathway for improving Qur'an translation, interpretation, and accessibility for diverse global audiences.

Abstract

Changes in media and technology have affected the legitimacy, distribution, and access to Qur'anic knowledge. The formulation of the research problem focuses on how the authority of Qur'anic science has evolved from traditional to rational-legal to technological and its implications for the legitimacy and quality of science. The purpose of this research is to explore the evolution of the scientific authority of the Qur'an, identify challenges and opportunities, and provide recommendations for education and management of digital interpretation. The research method uses a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach based on literature review and documentation studies with the integration of Max Weber's theory of traditional, rational-legal, and charismatic authority as an analytical knife. The results of the study show three findings. First, the traditional authority in classical times was centered on scholars and sanad, guaranteeing the authenticity and authenticity of the text. Second, rational-legal authority through standardized printing mushaf strengthens formal legitimacy and wide distribution. Third, technology authorities in the digital era bring the democratization of access through applications, but face challenges of legitimacy, interpretation accuracy, and algorithm dominance. The significance of the research lies in the systematic understanding of the evolution of the scientific authority of the Qur'an, its implications for education, the regulation of digital interpretation, and the integration of scientific traditions with technological innovation. This research's contribution provides a new conceptual framework for the study of the sociology of religion, Islamic epistemology, and the development of Qur'an applications, while affirming the importance of synergy between traditional authorities and technology to maintain the credibility and sustainability of Qur'anic knowledge.

Abstract

Studies on the Qur'anic concept of khayr often emphasize its ethical dimension, yet they rarely explore its full semantic range and theological integration within modern exegesis. This gap becomes evident when considering al-Sha'rāwī's interpretations, which offer a rich but understudied perspective on Qur'anic vocabulary. Addressing this gap, the present study investigates the meaning of khayr in the Qur'an from al-Sha'rāwī's viewpoint by analyzing its linguistic forms, semantic layers, and contextual applications. The objective of this research is to classify and interpret khayr across its grammatical variations—such as ism, ism tafḍīl, and ṣifah mushabbahah—and to examine how these forms contribute to al-Sha'rāwī's integrative understanding of goodness. Using a qualitative literature review, the study applies the tafsīr mawḍū'ī method to collect and analyze Qur'anic verses containing khayr, focusing specifically on Q. 16:30, Q. 21:73 and 90, Q. 44:37, Q. 98:7, and Q. 100:8. These verses are categorized according to their i'rāb structures and semantic characteristics, supported by etymological and terminological analysis. The findings reveal that al-Sha'rāwī interprets khayr not merely as moral virtue, but as a dynamic theological and ethical concept encompassing 'ibādah, 'aqīdah, and akhlāq. He frames khayr as a unifying principle linking divine reward with human action, suggesting that true goodness integrates worldly benefit with spiritual consequence. The implications of this study underscore the importance of linguistic-thematic approaches in uncovering the depth of Qur'anic semantics. Its global contribution lies in offering a model for semantic-based Qur'anic interpretation that enriches discussions in moral theology, comparative scripture studies, and cross-cultural ethical discourse.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the concept of fasād fī al-arḍ and examine its empirical implications for environmental degradation caused by sand mining in Kampung Bungbang, West Java. Unlike previous ecotheological studies that focus predominantly on textual-normative discourse, this study offers a distinct analytical framework by operationalizing the concept of fasād as a diagnostic indicator for specific ecological crises. A qualitative method was employed, integrating tafsir maudhu'i (thematic interpretation) with field research involving 12 key informants and direct observations conducted in December 2025. The findings demonstrate that sand mining activities in the area constitute a tangible form of fasād fī al-arḍ, manifesting in infrastructure deterioration, land degradation, and heightened landslide risks. Furthermore, the social dimension is significantly impacted, particularly concerning the health and psychological comfort of residents. This study concludes that environmental revitalization must transcend technical solutions to include a paradigm shift centered on the principles of khilāfah (managerial responssibility) and mīzān (ecological balance). The novelty of this work lies in its integration of theological values with empirical-contextual evidence, providing a benchmark for sustainable policy-making to prevent the legitimization of ecological disasters.

Abstract

This article examines the element of al-dakhil in the interpretation of verses about Imāmah in QS. al-Baqarah: 124, QS. al-Ma'idah: 55–56, and Surah al-Ma'idah: 67 in Fath al-Qadir by al-Shawkani and Majma' al-Bayan by al-Ṭabrisī. The research questions are: (1) What is the concept of Imamah in Shi'ism? (2) How does the element of al-dakhil operate in the interpretation of these verses, and (3) What are the differences between the two interpretations? Based on the results of this comparative study, we will see the extent to which the mufasir's theological background can influence the construction of meaning. This study aims to identify the form and operational mechanism of al-dakhil in both interpretations. The study uses a qualitative approach based on a literature review with a comparative interpretation method (tafsir muqaran). The analysis is conducted through the identification of interpretations, tracing the history used, and testing ideological tendencies in the framing of meaning. The results show that in Majma' al-Bayan, the element of al-dakhil appears through a doctrinal framing that is consistent with Imamiyah theology and the selection of history that supports the concept of divine leadership and the infallibility of the imam. Conversely, in Fath al-Qadir, this element is relatively minimal because al-Shawkani emphasizes the validity of sanad and more general contextual meanings without explicitly linking them to specific doctrines. This study contributes by positioning al-dakhil as an analytical category for reading ideological influences in tafsir and enriching comparative tafsir studies in understanding the relationship between text, tafsir, and theological affiliation.

Abstract

The escalating urban environmental crises, such as flooding and air pollution, demand beyond mere technical interventions; they require robust ethical-theological frameworks. While existing Islamic eco-theology predominantly discusses general environmental ethics, there is a distinct research gap in operationalizing specific Qur'anic verses into practical urban spatial policies. Therefore, this study aims to bridge classical theological interpretations of Surah Qaf: 9-11 with the modern regulatory concept of Green Open Space (RTH). Employing a qualitative library research design, this study utilizes the thematic exegesis (maudhu'i) approach formulated by Al-Farmawi. The primary data, sourced from authoritative classical commentaries (Ibn Kathīr, al-Rāzī, and Ibn 'Ashūr), were systematically analyzed using Abdullah Saeed's textual-contextual framework to synthesize classical theology with contemporary urban hydrology and microclimate science. The results indicate three key findings: (1) mā'an mubārakan (blessed water) aligns with sustainable urban hydrology and water security principles; (2) jannāt (gardens) serves as the theological equivalent of urban forests, functioning as vital ecosystem buffers and microclimate regulators; and (3) rizqan lil-'ibād (sustenance for servants) frames conservation not merely as a biological need, but as a socio-economic and spiritual mandate (amānah) for human stewardship (khalīfah). The novelty of this research lies in its specific formulation of "Ecological Piety," shifting the discourse from normative ethics to practical policy application. Ultimately, this study contributes a spiritual-ethical foundation for policymakers and fosters active community engagement in sustainable urban governance.

Abstract

This study examines how the tradition of reciting the Qur'an using the seven canonical readings (Qira'at Sab'ah) during tahajud prayer at Pondok Pesantren Hamalatul Qur'an Ringinagung, Kediri, represents an example of the Living Qur'an that is, the Qur'an as a text that is not only read, but lived and practiced in everyday life. While most studies on Qira'at Sab'ah tend to focus on technical aspects of recitation or its historical development, relatively little attention has been given to how this tradition is implemented and sustained within the institutional life of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). This research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing direct observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis as primary methods of data collection. The analysis is framed through Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical concepts of habitus (internalized dispositions), capital (resources such as knowledge and social support), and field (social arena). The findings indicate that the practice of reciting Qira'at Sab'ah during tahajud prayer gradually forms a natural and embodied habitus among the students (santri). From Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical perspective, this study finds that the tradition of Khatam Qirā'āt Sab'ah in Tahajud prayer is socially constructed and continuously reproduced through the dialectical interplay of habitus, capital, and field within the pesantren, thereby reinforcing the Living Qur'an paradigm and demonstrating that Qirā'āt practices function not merely as devotional acts but as institutionalized and legitimized socio-religious practices. This research contributes to the mobilization of religious and intellectual capital possessed by teachers, such as Ustadz Faiq Faizin, to strengthen and legitimize this tradition within the social sphere of the pesantren. This practice not only enhances the students' memorization of the Qur'an, but also deepens their appreciation and understanding of the diversity of Qur'anic recitations.

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between the twilight phenomenon and mental health through an interpretative study of the Qur'an, particularly Surah An-Nur verse 35. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method using a library research approach, analyzing classical and contemporary tafsir to understand the symbolism of light (nūr) as a representation of divine guidance and spiritual illumination. The interpretative process highlights key metaphors in the versesuch as the niche (mishkāt), the lamp (miṣbāḥ), and the radiant lightinterpreted as symbols of inner clarity and faith. The exegetical findings are then correlated with scientific studies on the biological and psychological effects of twilight exposure. Biologically, evening light contributes to serotonin production and the regulation of circadian rhythms, which support emotional stability and reduce anxiety. Psychologically, contemplation of twilight fosters reflective awareness, gratitude, and inner calm. The structure of the discussion covers three main aspects: the interpretation of light symbolism in the verse, the biological mechanisms of light exposure, and its psychological implications for mental health. The study concludes that viewing twilight as a reflection of divine beauty can also function as a form of natural therapy that nurtures inner peace and mental well-being.

Abstract

This study analyzes the narrative of Ashābul Fīl in Surah al-Fīl through Muhammad Ahmad Khalafullah's al-fann al-qashāṣī framework. While classical exegesis largely emphasizes the historical dimension of the event, limited research systematically applies Khalafullah's literary-narrative approach to short Makkiyyah surahs. This study addresses that gap by examining the aesthetic structure, symbolism, and theological meaning of QS. al-Fīl beyond historiographical concerns. Using a qualitative-descriptive design with a literary-hermeneutic approach, the research is based on textual analysis of the Qur'an, classical and modern tafsīr, and Khalafullah's theoretical works. Narrative structural analysis and thematic interpretation are employed to identify symbolic and theological patterns within the text. The findings show that QS. al-Fīl presents a dramatic structure consisting of threat, divine intervention, and the destruction of tyranny. The symbols of ṭayran abābīl and ḥijārah min sijjīl function as theological metaphors representing divine sovereignty and moral accountability. This study demonstrates that Khalafullah's approach enriches contemporary Qur'anic interpretation by integrating aesthetics, symbolism, and theology. Globally, the research highlights the Qur'an's ethical relevance in addressing injustice, authoritarianism, and moral crisis in modern society.

Abstract

The phenomenon of fatherlessness has emerged as a significant global social issue, influ-encing children's psychological well-being, identity formation, and moral development. While existing scholarship has largely examined fatherlessness through psychological and sociological frameworks, Qur'anic narratives on father-child relationships are often treated primarily within theological discourse. Consequently, there remains limited explo-ration of how classical Qur'anic exegesis can contribute to contemporary discussions on parenting and family crises. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the concept of paternal parenting in the stories of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ya'qub through the in-terpretive lens of Tafsir al-Kashshāf by al-Zamakhsharī and examines its relevance to the modern phenomenon of fatherlessness. This research employs a qualitative library-based approach combined with thematic Qur'anic interpretation (tafsīr mawḍū'ī). The analysis focuses on key Qur'anic passages related to father-son interactions, particularly Q.S. al-Ṣāffāt:102 and Q.S. Yūsuf:4-5, interpreted through the linguistic-rational framework characteristic of Tafsir al-Kashshāf. Data are analyzed descriptively and interpretatively to identify the parenting principles embedded within the exegetical discourse. The find-ings demonstrate that Tafsir al-Kashshāf articulates a prophetic model of paternal parent-ing grounded in three interrelated principles: democratic companionship, dialogical com-munication, and secure emotional attachment. Prophet Ibrahim's interaction with Ismail il-lustrates participatory decision-making and consultative dialogue, while Prophet Ya'qub's relationship with Yusuf reflects emotional attentiveness and psychological protection that foster a secure relational environment. This study contributes to Qur'anic studies by highlighting the contemporary relevance of classical exegesis in addressing modern social challenges. Furthermore, it offers a conceptual framework for integrating Qur'anic parent-ing values into contemporary family discourse, emphasizing the father's emotional pres-ence, communicative engagement, and moral leadership as essential elements in mitigating the fatherlessness crisis in modern societies.
