Abstract

Anoa (Bubalus sp.) is an endemic animal from Sulawesi whose sustainability is threatened. Animal feed in the form of green fodder is very important for the health of anoa, but its utilization is constrained by dry land. Feed is divided into natural feed that is available directly in nature and artificial feed processed from a mixture of natural ingredients. This study aims to observe the type of feed, feed management, providing nutrition, and daily behavior of anoa at the Citra Satwa Celebes Zoo, as part of an effort to conserve this ex-situ species. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method. Anoa are given a variety of feed, including para grass, elephant grass, kale and tofu dregs, to meet the needs of fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals in captivity. Feed management is carried out twice a day; tofu dregs which are rich in protein are given in the morning, while green grass is given in the afternoon to support digestion. The results of observations show that the feed given has met the basic nutritional needs of anoa with a protein content of 8.5% and crude fiber of 28%. The daily activity pattern of anoa is biphasic, with the main activities being feeding, walking, and resting in the morning and evening. These findings suggest that proper feeding management can support the physical health and psychological well-being of anoa in captive environments, and contribute to the success of conservation programs for this species.

Abstract

Three hundred and ninety-nine (399) West African dwarf goats from the Ejigbo Local Government Area in Osun State and the surrounding Derived Savanna Zone of Nigeria were evaluated for body measures and live weight. Analysis was done on data pertaining to 194 bucks and 205 does. These were categorized into six age groups (milk teeth, 2-teeth, 4-teeth, 6-teeth, 8-teeth, and worn teeth) and recorded by sex. The purpose of the study was to characterize the phenotype of the WAD goat and identify the best model or models for predicting liveweight based on body measures in the experimental location, which is Nigeria's derived savanna zone. For both sexes, body measurement values rose significantly (P < 0.05) with age. In bucks, the average body weight was 5.32 ±0.15 to 29.63±1.88 kg, while in does, it was 5.75±0.13 to 30.29±1.22 kg. In terms of body weight and other physical parameters, sex variations were discovered. For quantitative features including heart circumference, body length, rump height, foreleg height, and withers height, the fitted linear regression equations also show that the coefficients were positive and significant (P < 0.05). Moreover, at all ages, multiple regression considerably increased the coefficient of determination (R2) (P < 0.05). In summary, body weight and linear body measurements are economically significant characteristics in animal genetic resources, particularly for small ruminants like goats during selection, to offer precise weight determination in isolated locations without a scale.

Abstract

Partnership pattern broiler chicken production has contributed to chicken meat production, employment, and income of farmer households in rural areas. However, the challenge faced is the change of seasons which takes place twice a year which affects the production system. This study aims to evaluate differences in broiler chicken mortality, feed conversion (FCR) and Performance Index (IP) between the rainy and dry seasons. It was carried out in Gowa and Takalat Regencies from December to October 2022. Data was collected through surveys and interviews with 40 plasma farmers. The results showed that in the rainy season mortality was higher, FCR was not efficient, and IP performance was lower than in the dry season. I was concluded that broiler chicken maintenance in the rainy season has the potential to be detrimental to breeders. The implication of this research is that breeders need to minimize risks in the rainy season. It is recommended that breeders must be able to control the microclimate, especially humidity and wind speed which are ideal for broilers, maintain ration quality, and carry out fortification or the addition of certain substances to improve ration nutrition.
