Jurnal Bastra (Bahasa dan Sastra)
JOURNAL BASTRA (Language and Literature) is a publicly accessible journal published by the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Halu Oleo University. This journal is published four times a year, every January, April, July, and October. This journal contains the results of research (field or literature studies), theoretical studies, and critical studies covering several areas of study as follows. Indonesian language education includes studies on linguistic learning, phonology learning, morphology learning, syntax learning, semantic learning, pragmatics learning, discourse learning, sociolinguistic learning, and psycholinguistic learning. Indonesian literature education includes studies on poetry learning, fiction prose learning, and drama and film learning. Indonesian, includes studies on linguistics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse, sociolinguistics, and psycholinguistics. Indonesian literature includes studies on poetry, prose fiction, drama, and film with a structural approach, stylistics, semiotics, sociology of literature, psychology of literature, psychoanalysis, literary ecology, deconstruction, philology, phenomenology, feminism, literary reception, and literary anthropology.

This study aims to describe the improvement of poetry writing skills through learning media applied in Indonesian language learning in the material of writing poetry in class VIII F SMP Negeri 12 Malang. This research is a type of Classroom Action Research (PTK) with a qualitative descriptive approach. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII-F SMP Negeri 12 Malang. Sources of data in this study are observation sheets of students and teachers, questionnaires, interviews, pre-tests, post-tests, and results/products. Data collection techniques in this research are observation, interview, questionnaire, and test. The results of this study show the process of improving the ability to write poetry in class VII-F SMP Negri 12 Malang can be seen from the evaluation results which show significant developments in the ability of students to write poetry. Based on the results of the research that has been done, it can be concluded that the application of serialized images has proven effective in improving the ability of students in writing poetry. This is shown in the increase in the value of students from cycle 1 to cycle 2. The completeness value of learning outcomes in writing poetry in cycle 1 averaged 72, while the average in cycle 2 rose to 86. The use of serial image media can be applied in learning to write poetry. In addition to pictures and sample sheets of poetry text, the use of these media is recommended to provide examples of the application of the media.

Literature is a representation of life’s realities conveyed through the imagination of the author. As one form of literary work, the novel not only presents a narrative but also reflects perspectives on social conditions, including the image of women. This study aims to examine the image of women in the novel Perempuan Bayangan by Netty Vergiantini, focusing on the main character, Ningrum. The study employs feminist literary theory and a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data. The analysis centers on three main aspects of the female image: physical, psychological, and social. (1) The physical image includes descriptions of the character’s body and appearance. (2) The psychological image reflects the character’s mental state, emotions, and way of thinking. (3) Meanwhile, the social image is seen through the character’s position in society and her relationship with the surrounding environment. The results show that these three aspects are interconnected in shaping the portrayal of the female image in the novel. This study is expected to contribute to feminist literary studies and serve as a reference for future research on the representation of women in literary works. This study investigates the influence of the Indonesian language on English usage among students in an English Education Study Program at a state university in Indonesia. The research aims to identify and analyze the forms of linguistic interference from the students’ first language (L1) in their English production, both written and spoken. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through student essays, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. The data were analyzed using an error analysis framework based on Corder’s model, focusing on lexical, syntactic, morphological, and semantic errors. The findings reveal a consistent pattern of negative transfer, in which students directly translate Indonesian structures into English without considering structural and pragmatic differences. This study contributes to the field of second language acquisition by highlighting the persistence of L1 interference in EFL contexts and emphasizing the need for contrastive, context-based teaching strategies. It also provides practical implications for English instructors in designing more responsive learning environments.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi dan mendeskripsikan nilai-nilai sosial yang terkandung dalam legenda lokal yang terdapat di dalam Kawasan Cagar Budaya Nasional (KCBN) Muaro Jambi, salah satu kompleks candi terbesar di Asia Tenggara yang terletak di Provinsi Jambi, Indonesia. Dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, penelitian difokuskan pada enam legenda yang berasal dari berbagai desa di kawasan KCBN, yaitu: Nyai Sulhah, Kuburan Kelingking Raden Mattaher, Lubuk Larangan, Taman Buyut Do, Asal Usul Desa Teluk Jambu, dan Asal Usul Dusun Mudo. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi, serta dianalisis menggunakan reduksi data, klasifikasi, dan deskripsi naratif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa legenda-legenda tersebut mengandung tiga kategori besar nilai-nilai sosial berdasarkan klasifikasi Zubaedi (2012): (1) nilai-nilai kasih sayang, meliputi bakti, suka menolong, kesetiaan, dan kasih sayang; (2) nilai-nilai tanggung jawab, meliputi rasa memiliki, disiplin, dan empati; dan (3) nilai-nilai kerukunan sosial, meliputi toleransi, kerja sama, dan demokrasi. Penelitian ini memberikan wawasan baru terhadap legenda daerah KCBN yang belum tereksplorasi dan berkontribusi terhadap pengayaan studi sastra lisan Indonesia dengan fokus pada kearifan lokal dan etika sosial. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of oral literature-based storytelling methods in improving language literacy in elementary schools. The background of this study is based on the low literacy skills of elementary school students in Indonesia, which is caused by the lack of interesting and contextual learning methods. Storytelling is seen as an approach that is able to develop students' language skills comprehensively, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as instilling local character and cultural values. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with documentation study techniques from various journals, scientific articles, and digital sources. The results of the study show that oral literature-based storytelling is able to improve listening and speaking skills, enrich vocabulary, foster creativity, and increase students' interest in reading and writing. This approach also creates a fun and interactive learning atmosphere. In addition, digital storytelling also strengthens the effectiveness of this method through the use of technology such as animated videos, interactive audio, and other digital media. The integration of oral literature and modern technology makes learning more relevant to the needs and characteristics of today's students. This study recommends the development of a storytelling-based learning model to be widely applied in elementary schools, and encourages further research that examines the integration of this method in cross-subject learning.

This study was motivated by the low critical reading skills of students at SDN 037 Sabang and the limited innovation in the learning process. The research aimed to examine the effect of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) model assisted by digital flipbook media on students’ critical reading skills. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and nonequivalent control group design was applied. The sample consisted of 54 fourth-grade students selected through purposive sampling, with class IV C as the experimental group and class IV D as the control group. The learning process was carried out smoothly and effectively. During the planning stage, the researcher prepared instructional modules and critical reading assessment instruments. Throughout the learning activities, the classroom environment remained conducive, and students actively participated and responded well to the material. After implementing the CIRC model with digital flipbook assistance, the experimental class demonstrated improved critical reading skills. The average score increased from 50.33 (pretest) to 86.48 (posttest), while the control class improved from 48.41 to 76.89. The t-test showed a significance value of 0.046 (< 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two classes. The experimental class also achieved an N-Gain score of 79.60 (high category) and an effect size of 1.90 (large category). These findings suggest that the CIRC model, when supported by digital flipbook media, has a significant and positive impact on enhancing students’ critical reading abilities, making it an effective strategy to foster deeper reading comprehension and analytical thinking in elementary education.

This study aims to analyze the story facts character, plot, and setting in the short story “Sa’id Hasan” by Kamil Kaylani using the structuralist approach of Robert Stanton. Literature, as a reflection of life and a medium of cultural communication, is closely tied to the social environment in which it emerges. Short stories, as a popular literary form, offer concise yet meaningful narratives, making structural analysis essential to fully comprehend their messages. The structuralist approach holds that the meaning of a literary work lies not in isolated elements, but in the integration of its intrinsic components that form a coherent structure. This research focuses on three story facts outlined by Stanton’s theory: character, plot, and setting. The short story “Sa’id Hasan” tells the tale of a simple man named Hasan who appears cheerful but harbors deep sorrow over the loss of his family. The findings reveal that the story is rich with life values and effectively conveys the protagonist’s emotional depth through its well-organized structure. This research contributes theoretically to the development of structuralist literary studies, particularly in Arabic short stories, and offers practical benefits as a reference for academic studies in the field of Arabic Language and Literature.

This study aims to reveal how figurative language is used in the poem Ṣawt Ṣafīr al-Bulbul by al-Aṣmaʿī. It is a qualitative research using a descriptive-analytical method. The approach employed in this research is the five-level stylistic analysis theory proposed by Syihabudin Qolyubi. The results of the study show that the poem contains various stylistic features based on the levels of stylistic analysis, namely: (1) Phonological level (Muḥtawiyāt al-ṣawtī): the presence of sound repetition such as ṭab-ṭab, kaʿkʿaʿ, and other rhythmic sounds that create musicality; (2) Morphological level (Muḥtawiyāt al-ṣarfī): forms such as muharwiliy and waylī which are rich in emotional expression; (3) Syntactic level (Muḥtawiyāt al-naḥwī): the use of verbal sentences (jumlah fiʿliyyah) and inversion that contribute to expressive dynamics; (4) Semantic level (Muḥtawiyāt al-dalālī): the use of majāz (metaphor), kināyah (metonymy), and symbolism to convey themes of love and irony; and (5) Imagery level (Muḥtawiyāt al-taṣwīrī): the use of tashbīh (simile), istiʿārah (metaphor), and onomatopoeia to build vivid visual, auditory, and emotional atmospheres. This study demonstrates that al-Aṣmaʿī’s poem combines the power of language and rhythm in a form that is both aesthetic and rich in symbolism.

This study was motivated by the low level of students' skills in writing hikayat texts and their lack of interest in writing. To address this issue, the researcher implemented the Discovery Learning model assisted by Genially interactive media in hikayat text writing instruction. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the Discovery Learning model supported by Genially media on students' hikayat writing skills. The research was conducted at SMK Al Amanah with 63 tenth-grade students, consisting of 30 students in the experimental group (X OTKP 2) and 33 students in the control group (X OTKP 1). The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. This study employed a quantitative approach with a true experimental method and a post-test-only control group design. The instrument used was a hikayat writing test, assessed based on several aspects: structure, plot, language use, moral message, and creativity. The t-test results showed a t-value of 8.727 with degrees of freedom (df) = 61 and a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05. Based on these results, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Thus, the study concludes that the Discovery Learning model assisted by Genially interactive media has a significant effect on improving students' hikayat text writing skills.

This research aims to analyze the hierarchy of needs through the main characters of the six short stories contained in the short stories anthology “Kukila” by Aan Mansyur. The researcher limited the research to six selected short stories, “Kebun Kelapa di Kepalaku”, “Setia Adalah Pekerjaan yang Baik”, “Ketinggalan Pesawat”, “Celana Dalam Rahasia Terbuat Dari Besi”, “Tiba- Tiba Aku Florentino Ariza” and “Aku Selalu Bangun Lebih Pagi”. The analysis of the hierarchy of needs of the main characters from the six short stories was studied using humanistic psychology theory, namely the hierarchy of needs initiated by Abraham Maslow. This research method uses an analytical description method with a qualitative approach to reveal the dimensions of the hierarchy of needs in the short stories. The six short stories contain five concepts of the hierarchy of needs found, including; (1) physiological needs, (2) safety needs, (3) love and belonging needs, (4) self-esteem needs, and (5) self-actualization.
