Abstract

This study investigates how the Sedekah Desa ritual practiced in Kandangan Village, East Java, embodies key dimensions of religious moderation. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of ritual activities. The findings reveal that the tradition promotes four central indicators of religious moderation: (1) tolerance (tasāmuh)—evident in the inclusive prayer practices involving different religious groups; (2) equality (musāwah)—reflected in the shared participation across all social strata during communal meals; (3) justice (iʿtidāl)—symbolized through the jolen procession representing the balance between devotion to God (ḥabl min Allāh) and social solidarity (ḥabl min al-nās); and (4) adaptability (taṭawwur wa ibtikār)—seen in the community’s creative integration of Islamic values with local cultural expressions. These findings suggest that the Sedekah Desa ritual functions as a dynamic socio-religious mechanism that fosters inclusivity, intergroup harmony, and cultural resilience in contemporary Indonesian society.

Abstract

This study examines the complex relationship between religion, violence, and secularism by analyzing the perspectives of thinkers such as Marx, Nietzsche, Hobbes, and Karen Armstrong. Although religion is often considered the primary source of violence, this paper argues that violence related to religion is better understood as a manifestation of deeper political, economic, and existential forces. This study also explores the different paths of secularism development in the Western and Islamic worlds. In the West, secularism emerged as a revolutionary response to the corruption of church authority during the Dark Ages. On the other hand, secularism in the Islamic context was shaped by the need to manage religious diversity, as illustrated by the Medina Charter. The method used in this research is a qualitative-historical analysis of texts discussing the relationship between religion, violence, and the state. The novelty of this research lies in the application of José Casanova's concept of secularism to reveal that, despite the process of secularization, the West has experienced a resurgence of religion in the public sphere—thus demonstrating the failure of secularism as an ideology and nor statecraft principles.

Abstract

This study explores the philosophical foundations of Islamic education as articulated in Muhammad Iqbal’s seminal work Asrar-i Khudi, focusing on ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions. The research aims to reconstruct Iqbal’s ideal concept of Islamic education and examine how his philosophical poetry provides a normative framework for spiritual and intellectual development. Adopting a qualitative, text-based hermeneutic approach, this study analyzes seven poems in Asrar-i Khudi that explicitly address educational values and concepts. The findings reveal that ontologically, Iqbal envisions education as a process of realizing the self (khudi) in harmony with divine reality; epistemologically, he emphasizes critical reasoning, dynamic ijtihad, and knowledge integration; and axiologically, he advocates ethical responsibility and moral autonomy as essential educational goals. These results suggest that Iqbal’s educational philosophy offers a transformative paradigm that bridges metaphysical depth with practical human development. This study contributes to the discourse on Islamic educational thought by providing a conceptual model grounded in classical philosophy yet responsive to contemporary challenges in Muslim societies.

Abstract

This study examines how adolescents in Kalurahan Watusigar, a village in Yogyakarta, Indonesia known for its longstanding religious diversity, understand and practice religious tolerance in their daily lives. In this community, Muslims, Christians, and adherents of other faiths have coexisted for generations, making it a significant setting to explore interfaith experiences among adolescents in a rural plural context. Using a phenomenological approach with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), semi-structured interviews were conducted with three adolescents aged 15–18 who actively engage in interfaith interactions. The analysis identified six superordinate themes: (1) diversity as a lived social reality, (2) tolerance and appreciation of differences as core values, (3) religious freedom as a personal right, (4) positive interfaith social interaction, (5) cultural participation and empathy toward other traditions, and (6) collaboration across religious boundaries. A unique theme highlighted the affective and participatory dimension of tolerance. The findings demonstrate that in Watusigar, adolescent religious tolerance is not merely a normative ideal but an embodied and internalized social practice. By situating the lived experiences of youth within a plural rural setting, this study contributes to global discussions on adolescence, interfaith engagement, and peacebuilding. It also underscores the significance of character education grounded in religious moderation for fostering inclusive and harmonious interfaith relations.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Irfani epistemology in the practice of Sholat 40 (forty consecutive days of ritual prayer) within the Syattariyah Tariqah in West Sumatra, focusing on its role as a medium for attaining intuitive knowledge (ma‘rifah). While previous studies on Sufi orders in Indonesia often emphasize ritual practices or social functions, few have analyzed their epistemological dimensions. Adopting a phenomenological approach, supported by literature review and in-depth interviews with followers and the murshid, this research identifies three key elements within Sholat 40: soul purification (tazkiyah al-nafs), mystical experience, and the attainment of intuitive knowledge of the Divine essence. The findings indicate that in Irfani epistemology, knowledge transcends rational cognition and emerges through inner experience, enabling practitioners to perceive the presence of God directly. This study argues that Sholat 40 functions not only as ritual worship but also as a structured epistemic practice that facilitates spiritual transformation, moral refinement, and personal growth. By situating this practice within Irfani epistemology, the article contributes to broader discourses on Islamic mysticism, experiential knowledge, and the living tradition of Sufi epistemologies in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Amidst growing religious polarization and ideological rigidity, the call for moderation in Islam emerges as a theological and moral necessity. This study examines the concept of religious moderation (wasatiyyah) in contemporary Islamic thought, considering it across diverse intellectual traditions and sociocultural contexts. This paper employs a library research approach combined with a descriptive-analytical method. It draws from the works and discourses of eleven scholars: Quraish Shihab, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Muchlis Hanafi, Dainawi, Husain Thabathabai, and Abdurrahman Wahid, Musthofa Bisri, Joachim Wach, Djamaluddin Ahmad, and Afifuddin Muhajir. These scholars' ideas on religious moderation are documented in scholarly articles widely circulated on the Moraref portal and in academic journals affiliated with Islamic higher education institutions (PTKIN). The analysis thematically explores ethical principles such as tolerance, balance, justice, humility, and human dignity. Rather than treating moderation as a passive middle ground, these scholars frame it as an active, intentional ethical-spiritual orientation rooted in Islamic epistemology and responsiveness to plural realities. The findings demonstrate that, as articulated by these contemporary Islamic thought, religious moderation presents a spiritually grounded, intellectually engaged, and socially adaptive framework for constructing peace through transformative education, inclusive dialogue, and inner moral reform in an increasingly fragmented and globalized world.

Abstract

This study examines how philosophy is practiced within the context of Islamic higher education by mapping the theories, methodologies, and approaches found in undergraduate theses at the Faculty of Ushuluddin, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The research aims to provide an overview of how students engage with classical and contemporary philosophical frameworks to address issues such as globalization, modernity, and pluralism. Adopting a qualitative descriptive design, this study analyzes a corpus of student theses to identify dominant theoretical orientations and methodological tendencies. The findings reveal that Islamic epistemology, ethics, and metaphysics are the most frequently applied theoretical domains. Methodologically, textual analysis and doctrinal approaches dominate, while comparative and hermeneutical methods appear as complementary strategies. Other approaches, including historical, socio-cultural, and ethnographic perspectives, are less common, yet normative-philosophical analysis remains the most prevalent overall. These results suggest that while students demonstrate awareness of contemporary challenges, their engagement is mediated through traditional Islamic philosophical frameworks. This study contributes to discussions on philosophy pedagogy in Islamic higher education and highlights the need for broader methodological diversity to respond effectively to current intellectual and societal issues.

Abstract

This study examines the Turun Kasunge ritual as a unique expression of local Islamic practice within the multicultural society of Sosorgadong, North Sumatra. The ritual involves symbolic elements such as lime water, flour, and incense, each carrying specific meanings related to gratitude, purification, protection, and spiritual renewal. Although the tradition is practiced exclusively by the Muslim community, it is respected and accommodated by people of other faiths in the area, reflecting a culture of tolerance, coexistence, and mutual respect. Using a qualitative approach that includes in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, the research explores how Islamic spiritual values are embedded and negotiated within local cultural frameworks. The findings reveal that Turun Kasunge not only reinforces religious identity but also promotes social cohesion and communal harmony. It serves as a living example of how religious rituals can contribute to the values of religious moderation, interfaith understanding, and peaceful pluralism in everyday life. This study contributes to broader discussions on local Islam, ritual symbolism, and the role of religious practices in maintaining social integration in diverse communities.
