Abstract

Over the recent year, the consumption of plastic in all sorts of organization has been rising to an alarming rate, especially as people now use plastic to wrap material, carrying goods in supermarket or even while drinking (straw). Additionally, plastic is also highly used in packaging and manufacturing industries, especially for furniture, electronic casing and more. Nike itself has a part to play to reduce the rate in order to sustain a safe rate of plastic consumption. Plastic consumption is highly inequitable, with extremely high and wasteful levels in some countries contrasting with vanishingly small consumption levels in others. It is undeniable that people have to start reducing their consumption levels in order to achieve a low overall demand.

Abstract

Indonesia's craft industry, encompassing traditional crafts such as batik printing, weaving, and furniture, plays a vital role in the nation's cultural identity. Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) are key players, propelling the growth of creative cities. Among them, the furniture industry is prominent, despite a minor dip in 2022 exports. Notably, the United States accounts for 58.5% of Indonesian furniture exports and is the main export destination. This study employs the Five Porter Analysis to explore external factors influencing the furniture craft sector. The findings emphasize the importance of ensuring a stable supply of raw materials, aligning products with international preferences, promoting sustainable resource management, fostering innovation, and navigating international trade regulations. Government support is pivotal. The results demonstrate the need for a comprehensive strategy to sustain competitiveness. It calls for capacity building, market research, and global collaboration to strengthen Indonesia's position in the international market. This research offers valuable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and MSMEs to enhance Indonesia's furniture craft industry's competitiveness while preserving its rich cultural heritage.

Abstract

Credit plays a vital role in supporting economic growth by aligning with development priorities to promote equitable outcomes. The People's Business Credit (KUR) and Ultra Microfinancing (UMi) programs are government initiatives designed to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Papua by providing financing for working capital and investment. Although the distribution of KUR and UMi in Papua has shown consistent annual growth, their contribution at the national level remains relatively small. This study examines the impact of these programs on economic growth in Papua Province from 2019 to 2022 using quantitative analysis and panel data regression. Findings reveal that KUR distribution, while significantly increased in Jayapura City, has a minimal impact on economic growth, as indicated by an R-squared value of 0.0058. The statistically insignificant coefficients for KUR and UMi suggest their limited contribution to economic development. External factors such as infrastructure and government support are likely more influential, underscoring the need to enhance program accessibility and explore broader determinants of Papua's economic growth. Recommendations include enhancing program accessibility and exploring other variables influencing Papua's economic dynamics.

Abstract

The global supply chains in the Textile and Clothing (T&C) industry have been shaping by various forces, among them economic development policy is one of the strongest. Amid the rollout of the Chinese’s new national development strategy—Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), major T&C companies see both opportunities and challenges in optimizing and restructuring the networks of their production facilities. One notable and growing trend associated with the BRI is the relocation of T&C manufacturing from China to ASEAN countries and establishment of new factories along the Belt and Road (B&R). Much has been examined about the BRI at the national level, yet little is known about how companies in the T&C industry have responded to this grand economic development plan. This study aims to explore from industrial stakeholders’ perspectives, the factors that drive and hinder synergistic, mutually beneficial development of T&C production and trade among the B&R countries. To achieve this aim, it addresses the following questions: what are the challenges and opportunities faced by T&C companies establishing or relocating production to B&R countries, and what tangible actions have been taken by them? In-depth interviews were carried out with ten industry professionals from Hong Kong-based companies and government institutions involved with T&C trade in the Asian B&R countries, such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia and Myanmar. The findings of this study highlight the importance of pursuing sustainable development. On one hand, there is full of potential for T&C companies to achieve cost-effective production along the B&R countries through harnessing economic policy and transport infrastructure that facilitate trade. On the other hand, T&C companies see challenges in managing culturally diversity in the workplace as opportunities for pursuing corporate development in a socially responsible manner. In sum, this study reveals mutual supportiveness of economic and social aspects of T&C production and trade.

Abstract

The implementation of the Circular Economy (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recovery, and Repair) in Indonesia is having difficulties, various problems still arise, especially related to readiness to change behavior patterns. Gap research from various sources indicates that building awareness from the end user aspect is important for more in-depth investigation, especially related to the motivators and obstacles to implementing a circular economy. As agents of change, the younger generation is one group concerned about implementing circular economy practices. The younger generation is the ideal basis for becoming agents of change who play the role of players as well as consumers of the future. This research is intended to investigate to what extent the role of the younger generation (attitudes, norms, intentions, behavior) can be a trigger factor for strengthening the role as agents of change (willingness to participate). This research involved 253 young people from various regions in Indonesia. Through SEM-LISREL analysis to test the modeling, several interesting things were found, namely: 1) intention and behavior are strong determinants of forming awareness to participate in becoming agents of change that support positive attitudes to implement circular economy practices, 2) there are indications the poor aspect of the norm to encourage agents of change. The findings can complete the research gap that changes the role of the younger generation to be accelerators of Circular Economy practices in the future.
