Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the translation strategies of ecological terms in the Qur'an into the Palembang Malay language. Many studies have been conducted on Palembang language translation, but none have specifically examined the strategies used. Meanwhile, this needs to be studied as practical knowledge for readers of translations to identify the objectives of the strategy, thereby facilitating the understanding of ecological concepts in the Qur'an. The results of the study show that the ecological terms found in the Qur'an include 46 data related to animals, 18 related to plants, and 25 related to geography. In the translation into Palembang, various linguistic forms are used with various strategies. Among Baker's 8 translation strategies, there are 5 strategies found in the translation of these ecological terms. These include the superordinate strategy (11 data), translation with more neutral/less expressive words (34 data), translation with cultural substitution (12 data), translation with equivalent words and explanations (29 data), and translation with paraphrasing using related words (2 data). These findings indicate that in the translation of ecological terms, emphasis is placed on strategies for clarity of meaning and cultural accessibility for Palembang readers. In this case, it can practically improve the accessibility and understanding of the community towards the regional translation of the Qur'an.

Abstract

Drilling may be considered a method of the past within teaching approaches, but it can still be popular in the EFL context, particularly for Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL). Existing literatures present varying perspectives on the effectiveness of drilling, indicating a need to explore a more comprehensive understanding. This study aims to generally identify the types, advantages, and challenges of drilling used in Indonesian TEYL classrooms to better understand if the drilling is still relevant in the current teaching context. Employing a qualitative approach through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), data were analyzed from 14 articles selected through predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The articles were retrieved using a selection process through Publish or Perish (PoP) from the Google Scholar database and published between 2014 and 2024. Data were analyzed thematically using a table analysis through coding and categorization, covering six main types of drilling: repetition drill, question-and-answer drill, chain drill, single-slot substitution drill, multiple-slot substitution drill, and snowball drilling. The advantages of drilling include increasing student engagement, improving vocabulary mastery, enhancing pronunciation and speaking skills, and supporting learning through multimedia integration. Conversely, challenges involve pronunciation errors, initial lack of engagement, difficulty in memorizing vocabulary, and boredom among advanced learners. The findings suggest that drilling should be integrated with interactive and contextual learning strategies to address the challenges and enhance its effectiveness in modern TEYL settings within the EFL context.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the acoustic characteristics of English pronunciation by teenagers through the Voice Onset Time (VOT) parameter. Specifically, the research emphasizes the analysis of VOT duration in initial plosive consonants [p], [b], [t], [d], [k], and [g] in English. The study employs a quantitative approach with an experimental method. Data were collected through recordings of words containing plosive consonants spoken by several teenagers. The recordings were then digitized into sound wave format and analyzed using Praat software through stages of digitization, data segmentation, and contour replication. This approach enables accurate measurement of VOT values for plosive consonants. The VOT analysis results indicate significant variations between individuals. The average VOT values for voiceless consonants [p], [t], and [k] are 46 ms, 82 ms, and 49 ms, respectively, while voiced consonants [b], [d], and [g] have average VOT values of 38 ms, -13 ms, and 10 ms, respectively. These findings suggest that the students tend to produce voiceless consonants with shorter VOT durations compared to native speakers, making them sound closer to voiced consonants.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the linguistic units used in the dialogues between characters that reveal differences in men’s and women’s language use, and to analyze the contextual meanings and gender inequality that appeared in the Korean drama series When Life Gives You Tangerines. This research is categorized as a descriptive qualitative study employing a sociolinguistic approach, specifically drawing on the theories of Peter Trudgill (2000) and Janet Holmes (2013). The data, in the form of phrases, clauses, and sentences that represent gender inequality, were taken from the selected dialogues in the series and analyzed through identification, classification, and interpretation, based on Judith Lorber's (2001) framework. The study found that, based on the contextual meaning of two phrases, six clauses, and four sentences, a patriarchal ideology exists in Korean society. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that gender inequality is evident in the Korean drama When Life Gives You Tangerines. These include unequal access, economic gaps, political underrepresentation, and societal stereotypes.

Abstract

Vulnerability is an experience that is often inherent in women's lives, especially when they are in socially unequal situations. In the context of conflict and forced migration, this vulnerability becomes even more layered and complex. The film The Swimmers (2022) presents a representation of the experiences of refugee women through the story of two sisters from Syria who face war, cross-border displacement, and various forms of discrimination. This article aims to analyze how women's vulnerability is represented in the film The Swimmers using an intersectional feminist perspective. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data sources consisting of 10 main scenes selected purposefully because they show the intersection between gender, refugee status, and power relations. The data were analyzed through reading the film's dialogue and visuals by linking them to the concept of intersectionality. The results of the study show that the vulnerability of women in the film is not only portrayed as a condition of marginalization and powerlessness, but also as a space for the emergence of agency, resilience, and solidarity. The contribution of this study lies in its effort to enrich the study of intersectional feminism in film analysis, particularly in reading the representation of refugee women in a more contextual and layered manner.
