Abstract

Quail agribusiness entrepreneurship venture is a minimal expense, exceptionally simple and high benefit business. Up till now, the investment of agribusiness in quails is not yet famous. This study aimed to examine the quail agribusiness entrepreneurship in Nigeria. Cross-sectional data were obtained from 164 quail agribusiness entrepreneurs selected through a multi-stage sampling procedure. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. Results showed that the major motives for the agribusiness entrepreneurs' venture in quail agribusiness were that quail agribusiness and its egg production investment is profitable (23.78%). The technical information on quail production was mainly sourced from their associates/poultry-related agribusiness entrepreneurs (31.10%) and 59.76% had interactions with the agricultural extension officers while 40.85% obtained their funds to finance the quail agribusiness from their savings. The identified most prevalent constraint always faced by the quail agribusiness entrepreneurs include the inaccessibility to supply centres and markets (3.89) which necessitated the major training needs of quail meat processing and handling of quail eggs (26.22%). The study concluded that the age of the quail agribusiness entrepreneurs (r = 0.42; p≤0.05), their gross margin per production cycle (r = 0.85; p≤0.05) and their years of experience in quail agribusiness (r = 0.71; p≤0.05) are important contributors in determining the stock size of quails reared Nigeria. It was recommended that stakeholders in the quail agribusiness in Nigeria should improve their business capacity through collective capacity building/training programmes and awareness creation on production and the nutritional and medicinal value of quails.

Abstract

Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) leaves contain several antimicrobial properties such as saponins, hydrocyanic acid, polyphenols, acetylcholine, potassium, tannin, phenol, riboflavin, and flavonoids.  Phenol is a compound found in plants that causes pesticide effects. Previous studies have demonstrated that breadfruit leaf extract contains phenol compounds with antimicrobial activity and can be used as a fungicide. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of breadfruit leaf extract on the growth inhibitory power and percentage inhibition of Puccinia arachidis spore germination as well as the best concentration of breadfruit leaf extract in inhibited the growth of Puccinia arachidis, an agent causing groundnut rust disease in peanut plants in food poisoning method. This study used a single factor CRD consisting of 5 treatment levels, namely k0(-) = negative control, k0(+) = positive control, k1 = 10 % extract concentration, k2 = extract concentration of 20 %, and k3 = extract concentration of 30 %. The results of this study indicate that the breadfruit leaf extract significantly affected Puccinia arachidis growth with the presence of percentage inhibition of Puccinia arachidis spore germination. The highest concentration of breadfruit leaf extract as a rust disease biofungicide (Puccinia arachidis) in peanut plants in vitro at a concentration of 30 %.

Abstract

Efficiency and effectiveness in controlling crossbreeding are pivotal in yielding superior hybrid varieties with desired traits such as genetic purity and high productivity. Cytoplasmic Male Sterile (CMS) is a crucial component in hybrid variety assembly. This study aims to identify the genotypes that can induce male sterile lines based on genetic diversity and the level of pollen sterility in the prospective male sterile genotypes tested, consisting of seventeen genotypes. The research findings revealed that the genetic diversity among the seventeen observed male-sterile candidate genotypes tends to vary in quantitative traits. Among the quantitative traits, JHD14 exhibited indications of being a male sterility inducer compared to the other genotypes observed, demonstrating a value of 0.00 g in terms of pollen weight. This is further substantiated by the microscopic examination of JHD14 pollen grains, which displayed 100% sterility.

Abstract

An in-depth analysis of Internet of Things (IoT) applications expertise for agriculture. This article's primary purpose is to provide a comprehensive and organized review of IoT research in agriculture themes. Although recent research has offered some pertinent information regarding the analysis of IoT applications in agriculture, further information is needed. Bibliometric analysis is utilized to objectively investigate, and develop information knowledge of IoT applications in agriculture. The papers investigated and examined the themes of IoT-agriculture by analyzing the co-occurrence keywords. The analysis began by picking 550 papers from the Scopus database that were published from 2003 to May 2023. The results show that IoT agriculture papers have grown rapidly since 2015 until now. The three journals that published the most IoT agricultural publications are Sensors (Switzerland), Computers and Electronics in Agriculture, and IEEE Access. Based on the co-occurrence keywords, the focus of IoT paper in agriculture is wireless sensors network (WSN) and radio frequency identification (RFID) for agricultural monitoring, smart agriculture with IoT blockchain and machine learning, IoT greenhouses with cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI), components of IoT agriculture, precision agriculture with low power low range (LoRa) communication network and IoT cloud platform, smart farming with sensor networks and automation. The study provided an understanding of themes of the IoT agriculture that has been carried out and its future growth. The future of IoT application will elaborate a system efficient, consumes less energy, and emits less carbon dioxide. It has begun by combining IoT-agriculture with the technology edge-fog-cloud layer.

Abstract

Socio-culture is increasingly recognized as an important part towards sustainable food production and consumption.  This evolution is reflected in the fact that socio-culture is now generally referred to as one of the main drivers of sustainable food production and consumption. This study focuses on socio-cultural aspects in relation to the food production subsystem and food consumption subsystem in highland communities in West Sinjai District, Sinjai Regency, South Sulawesi Province. Using a qualitative approach, case study method, with data collection techniques, in-depth interviews, full observation, documentation and triangulation. So that it can see in depth the socio-cultural reality of the highland community. The socio-cultural apparatus is one of the supporting factors in the realization of the sustainability of food production and consumption in highland communities. The socio-cultural apparatus is one of the supporting factors in realizing the sustainability of food production and consumption in upland communities.  The socio-cultural component in the food production of highland communities strongly emphasizes the value of togetherness, the value of mutual cooperation and religious values. These values are implemented into food production activities from land preparation to harvesting such as; "Appada Elo"; "Appatinro Bine"; "Passibaling"; "Ganre Pare Beru".  The socio-cultural component of food consumption in highland communities also emphasizes religious values (a symbol of gratitude to the creator and getting closer to their ancestors), the value of togetherness (serving food to others as a form of respect and appreciation) and prestige values (types of food such as: local varieties of brown rice). These values are wrapped in community norms that have been maintained for generations as an effort to maintain the sustainability of community food production and consumption

Abstract

Over the years, the consumption of vegetables has grown. Due to growing consumer concern over health-related issues, this has happened. The purpose of this study is to investigate the patterns in vegetable consumption and exploration of the underlying factors for that existing pattern. In this study, information was gathered from household surveys. Data was analyzed using multinomial logistic regression and descriptive analysis. The majority (76.6%) of the respondents had up to seven family members. one-third of the sampled population falls in the service sector of the economy (43%). most of the sample households were from rural backgrounds (55.9%). Around (87.8%) of the sample population consumed less than 3 servings of vegetables in a day.  The quantity of vegetable consumption as a dependent variable has three categories less than, greater than, and equal to three serving sizes. While taking greater than three serving sizes as a reference category and less than three serving sizes as the dependent variable. It was found that as the family size increases from three members to more than that there is a likelihood increase in taking vegetables more on a per capita basis per day with an odds ratio of 0.21(0.4-0.9), similarly there is a likelihood increase in the vegetable consumption with the increase in monthly income 0.5(0.12-0.95), as the frequency of buying vegetables increases there is an increase in vegetable consumption, accessibility has also significant bearing on its intake. Due to less access to the marketplaces, rural residents have low trips to grocery shops and rely mostly on homegrown vegetables. Respondents from urban residents have frequent trips to the grocery shops mostly due to the availability of vegetables. The results show that implementing an appropriate pricing strategy and promoting market infrastructure will augment the dietary diversity in the population which will lead to the holistic development of the vegetable industry as well as the required nutritional needs efficiently.

Abstract

This research aimed to analysis the effect of various types of organic fertilizer and mulch types on growth and production of tomato plants. Research was conducted at Liliriaja District, Soppeng Regency, South Sulawesi on January-June 2023. This research used a factorial 2 factor experiment in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) as the environmental design. The first factor is organic fertilizer with 3 types: chicken compost 15 tons ha-1, cow manure 15 tons ha-1, and goat manure 15 tons ha-1. The second factor is mulch with 3 types: without mulch, 10 tons ha-1 rice husk mulch, and plastic mulch. The results showed that there was an interaction between chicken compost fertilizer and rice husk mulch at the number of fruit / plot (260.00 fruits), fruit weight / plot (8.00 kg) and production (26.67 tons ha-1). Chicken compost in 15 ton ha-1 gave the highest number of fruit /plant (18.93 fruits) and fruit weight/plant (727.00 g).

Abstract

The sterilization is a primary step in in-vitro culture. plant breeding through in-vitro culture hinges on the successful effectiveness of the sterilization method in producing sterile plants. This research aims to optimize sterilization methods using a completely randomized factorial design. The first factor is the size of the material (small and large), and the second factor is the graded concentration of the bleach solution. The study revealed that Material sizes do not have a significant effect on contamination level, all the same, large size materials increase the survival rate of sterilized rodent tuber plants. The application of graded bleach solution concentrations at 25%, 20%, and 15% is able to reduce contamination to 0% on small size materials and 5 % on large size materials. Material sizes do not have a significant effect on contamination level, all the same, large size materials increase the survival rate of sterilized rodent tuber plants.

Abstract

This study aimed to help reduce the lime fleshing solid waste problem by implementing utilization as feed for Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae. The BSF larvae were analyzed as a sample to determine whether it is safe to be eaten by other living species, especially catfish. The raw material used is lime fleshing cowhide waste from a leather tannery. The process included fermentation of lime fleshing waste with a formulation of waste: bran: water (8:1:2) for three days, hatching BSF larvae eggs for six days, and feeding fermented waste to BSF larvae (1000:1) for nine days, then baby BSF larvae dried, and BSF larvae were applied to catfish in a ratio (BSF larvae weight = 9: 5) for 12 days. Then, they analyzed the protein, calcium, and sulfur contents on the sample BSF larvae and catfish. We used the fermentation of lime fleshing waste with bran and water variables, which are well water, catfish pond water, and rice washing water, for three days. Then, hatching BSF larvae eggs for six days, BSF larvae cultivation for nine days, and application of the BSF larvae on catfish for 12 days. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, then continued using the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The result of fermented lime fleshing waste was used on the BSF larvae, and the cultivation contents were analyzed for protein, calcium, and sulfur. The analysis result of the three variables has an average value of protein at around 6.06%, calcium at 0.041%, and sulfur at around 0.016%. The study concludes that BSF larvae, when combined with commercial feed and suitable formulation, could be an effective and efficient alternative feed for catfish while addressing the lime fleshing waste problem.

Abstract

This study examines whether taking advantage of off-farm employment as an alternative income source improves the welfare of rural households in Indonesia. Using a panel data set from rural households in Central Sulawesi, the effect of off-farm diversification examines on total household income and economic mobility over time. A fixed effects and random effects model with an instrumental variable is applied in analyzing the causal effects of off-farm employment. The findings confirm substantial growth stemming from work outside of a household’s farming, which is shown to improve income and economic mobility in rural areas. Off-farm work was found to positively affect total household income, which increased by 63.20% in real Indonesia rupiah (IDR) in conjunction with the number of men in the family and cocoa cultivation. The results also indicate a need for a policy that encourages off-farm employment, particularly for value-added activities that are accessible to lower-income groups to improve income and reduce poverty among the poor
