Abstract

In Islamic studies, basic nahwu is often regarded merely as a technical linguistic tool, whereas epistemologically this discipline functions as a logical foundation for unpacking the structure of meaning in revealed texts. This study aimed to reveal the epistemological significance of basic nahwu in shaping the methodological thinking patterns of santri at Pondok Pesantren Imam Bukhari. A qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach was employed to evaluate how the internalisation of fundamental rules, such as mastery of i‘rāb and the functional positions of words, influences the way santri deduce meaning from the naṣṣ of the Al-Qur’an. The findings show that mastery of basic nahwu contributes significantly to constructing santri’s thinking framework in three main aspects: (1) accuracy, by minimising interpretive errors caused by changes in final vowels (harakat); (2) logic, by habituating systematic thinking based on the relationships among subject (fā‘il), object (maf‘ūl), and predicate (fi‘l); and (3) authority, by building santri’s scholarly confidence to refer directly to primary sources. In conclusion, basic nahwu is not merely a linguistic prerequisite but an essential epistemic instrument for safeguarding the authenticity of Al-Qur’an understanding from speculative interpretations.

Abstract

Philosophy of science is a reflective inquiry into the nature, sources, methods, and purposes of knowledge, while developments in modern science reveal fundamental differences between Western and Islamic traditions in their views of knowledge. This article aims to examine the concept of philosophy of science from Islamic and Western perspectives and to analyse their similarities and differences. The study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach through critical review of relevant works on philosophy of science, Islamic epistemology, and the modern Western intellectual tradition. The findings show that modern Western philosophy of science tends to be grounded in rationalism, empiricism, and secularism, thereby separating knowledge from spiritual values and rendering it autonomous from revelation. In contrast, Islamic philosophy of science is founded on the principle of tauhid, which integrates revelation, reason, and moral values into a single, hierarchical, and mutually complementary unity. The article concludes that integrating the paradigm of Islamic philosophy of science offers an important alternative for responding to the value crisis in the development of modern science, while also opening space for the construction of knowledge that is more ethical, transcendental, and oriented toward human well-being.

Abstract

Moral education is the core of Islamic education, aimed at shaping noble human character, and within the pesantren context the ustadz functions not only as a religious instructor but also as an ontological authority who serves as a reference point for the truth of practice and as a life model for santri. This study aimed to analyse the role of ustadz as an ontological authority in shaping the moral character of santri at the tsanawiyah level of Pondok Pesantren Imam Bukhari. A qualitative approach with a field study design was employed, using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to reveal the contextual practice of moral education. The findings show that ustadz possess ontological authority manifested through moral exemplarity, spiritual depth, behavioural consistency, and academic as well as religious legitimacy. The process of character formation among santri takes place through the internalisation of tauhid values, habituation of worship, continuous supervision, and educational relationships grounded in ethical principles. This study affirms that an ontological approach to the role of ustadz strengthens the effectiveness of moral education in pesantren and is relevant as a model for the development of moral education in Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

Collection suitability is a key aspect of service quality because it is directly related to a library’s ability to meet users’ information needs, yet in-depth qualitative studies exploring users’ perceptions of collection suitability in provincial public libraries remain limited. This study aimed to understand library users’ perceptions of collection suitability at the Dinas Kearsipan dan Perpustakaan Provinsi Sumatera Barat (West Sumatra Provincial Archives and Library Office) in terms of relevance, adequacy, and accessibility of the collection. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving users selected purposively based on the intensity and breadth of their experience in utilising the library’s collections. Data were analysed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with validity tested using source and technique triangulation. The findings show that, in general, users perceive the library’s collection as reasonably suitable for their information needs, particularly for reading, studying, and educational support, with novels, textbooks, and reference books as the most frequently used types of materials. However, users also highlight limitations in the currency of the collection, the depth of certain subject areas, and access to digital collections. The study concludes that the suitability of the library’s collection is at a moderately good level but still requires continuous development, with implications for the need for regular collection updates, expansion of subject coverage, and strengthening of digital collections to enhance user satisfaction and the effectiveness of public library services.

Abstract

The layout of library spaces is a key factor influencing users’ comfort in utilising library services, yet studies that specifically explore the role of spatial layout in user comfort at regional public libraries from a user-experience perspective remain relatively limited. This study aimed to analyse the role of library space layout in supporting user comfort at the Dinas Kearsipan dan Perpustakaan Provinsi Sumatera Barat, with a particular focus on the arrangement of reading areas, shelving, ease of mobility, lighting, and overall room conditions. A qualitative method with a descriptive qualitative design was employed through in-depth interviews and direct observation of library users selected via purposive sampling based on their experience in using the library space. Data were analysed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing using a thematic approach. The findings show that, overall, the library’s spatial layout has supported user comfort, particularly through the separation of reading areas and collection areas as well as the relatively orderly arrangement of facilities; the reading room is generally perceived as comfortable and conducive for reading and studying activities, while the placement of shelving assists users in locating materials. Nevertheless, several constraints were identified, including narrow aisle spacing between shelves in certain areas, mismatches between collection placement and classification numbers, and uneven lighting. The study concludes that the library’s spatial layout plays a crucial role in shaping user comfort but still requires ongoing optimisation. The implications highlight the need for more adaptive spatial planning, improved lighting quality, and more consistent collection management to enhance user comfort and the overall quality of public library services.

Abstract

The use of the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) is a key component in supporting users’ information retrieval in libraries, yet in practice OPAC has not been optimally utilised, particularly in regional public libraries that serve users with diverse educational backgrounds and levels of information literacy, potentially hindering the effectiveness of information retrieval. This study aimed to analyse the use of OPAC in supporting users’ information searching at the Dinas Kearsipan dan Perpustakaan Provinsi Sumatera Barat. The research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive design, using in-depth interviews with library users and direct observation of OPAC use within the library, with informants selected through purposive sampling based on their experience in utilising OPAC. Data were analysed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing using a thematic approach. The findings show that OPAC has been used as an initial tool for information searching to help users identify the titles, authors, availability, and locations of collections, with search features based on title and author name being the most frequently used because they are considered easy and practical. Nevertheless, several challenges remain, including users’ limited understanding of OPAC features, a lack of usage guidelines, unstable system performance, and discrepancies between OPAC records and the actual collections on the shelves. The study concludes that while OPAC use has supported users’ information searching, it has not yet reached an optimal level; the implications underscore the need to improve OPAC service quality through regular updating of collection data, enhancement of system performance, and strengthening of users’ information literacy so that OPAC can be utilised more effectively in public libraries.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of in-group and out-group formation on social media from the perspective of Social Identity Theory, employing a systematic literature review approach. Literature searches were conducted in the Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases for publications from 2019 to 2025. Of the 309 articles initially identified, 10 met the inclusion criteria after a screening process using the PRISMA protocol. The analysis shows that in-group formation is facilitated by platform algorithms, virtual community features, and social identification processes reinforced by online interactions, whereas out-group formation occurs through mechanisms of social comparison, stereotypes strengthened by echo chambers, and intergroup competition. In the digital era, social identity appears more flexible and dynamic than in offline contexts, with social media acting as a catalyst that accelerates processes of group categorization and polarization. These findings have important implications for understanding social polarization and online radicalization, as well as for developing digital literacy-based intervention strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of social identity dynamics in virtual spaces.

Abstract

Evaluation is an essential component of the Islamic Religious Education (PAI) curriculum because it serves to measure the achievement of educational objectives comprehensively, encompassing cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. This article aimed to examine the role of evaluation in the PAI curriculum and to describe various evaluation models that are relevant for supporting the implementation of PAI learning. The method employed was library research by analyzing books, scholarly journal articles, and educational policy documents related to evaluation and the PAI curriculum. The findings indicate that evaluation in the PAI curriculum functions not only as a tool to measure learning outcomes, but also as a means to improve the learning process and strengthen students’ character formation. Evaluation models such as formative, summative, authentic, and competency-based evaluation were identified as relevant approaches to ensure the comprehensive attainment of PAI objectives. The study concludes that the application of appropriate, systematic, and competency-oriented evaluation models contributes to the realization of effective PAI learning in shaping students who are faithful, morally upright, and broadly knowledgeable.

Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has brought significant changes to the field of education, including in Pendidikan Agama Islam (PAI), thereby necessitating critical examination to ensure its use remains aligned with the aims of Islamic education. This study aimed to analyze the use of AI in PAI learning from the perspective of the philosophy of science in terms of ontology, epistemology, and axiology in order to understand the position, role, and value implications of this technology. The research employed a qualitative approach with a literature review method based on a systematic literature review (SLR), through the identification and analysis of relevant national and international journal articles, scientific conference proceedings, and academic books published between 2020 and 2025. Data were analyzed using thematic and conceptual–philosophical analysis techniques to identify patterns of findings and the philosophical implications of AI use in PAI learning. The findings show that AI functions as an effective pedagogical tool for enhancing the efficiency, personalization, and accessibility of learning, but it cannot replace the role of the teacher as a moral guide and value educator. Ontologically, AI is understood as a technological artefact devoid of consciousness; epistemologically, the knowledge it generates is data-driven and assistive; and axiologically, the value of AI is determined by the orientation of its use in relation to the aims of Islamic education. This study concludes that the integration of AI in PAI learning must be situated within a human-centered and value-oriented educational framework, thereby offering a theoretical contribution to the development of the philosophy of Islamic education and providing a conceptual foundation for adaptive and meaningful educational practice in the digital era.

Abstract

Islamic educational philosophy functions as a conceptual and normative foundation for the implementation of Islamic education, directing all educational processes toward the goal of forming morally upright individuals. This study aimed to analyze the ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions of Islamic educational philosophy and their implementation in educational practice at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus. A qualitative approach with a philosophical–empirical design was employed, with data obtained through in-depth interviews with Islamic Religious Education teachers, general subject teachers, and the vice principal for curriculum affairs, supported by institutional documentation. The findings showed that, ontologically, teachers view students as creatures of Allah who possess physical and spiritual potential that must be developed in a balanced manner; epistemologically, the learning process integrates sources of knowledge in the form of revelation, reason, and empirical experience; and axiologically, education is directed toward the formation of noble character, Islamic values, and the beneficial application of knowledge in social life. These findings affirm that Islamic educational philosophy does not remain at the conceptual level, but is concretely implemented in the planning and implementation of teaching and learning at school. This study contributes to strengthening the discourse on Islamic educational philosophy grounded in institutional practice and offers an empirical depiction of how these philosophical foundations are operationalized in the context of Islamic secondary education.
