Abstract

Although the role of religious leaders in preventing drug abuse has been examined in various studies, research specifically addressing their synergy with the police, the village government, Kerapatan Adat Nagari (KAN), and youth organizations at the village level remains limited. This study aimed to describe the role of religious leaders in preventing drug abuse in Ujung Gading Village, Lembah Melintang Subdistrict, West Pasaman Regency. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The research informants consisted of religious leaders, police officers, village government officials, traditional leaders, and youth organization administrators selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation and were subsequently analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which comprises data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that religious leaders played an important role in preventing drug abuse through Islamic preaching, religious lectures, religious study sessions, moral development, and coordination with various stakeholders. Cross-sector synergy was manifested through educational activities, public awareness campaigns, deliberations, and community development initiatives that strengthened social control based on religious and customary values. However, the effectiveness of prevention efforts continued to face constraints in the form of low participation among some community members, the influence of peer environments, and limited family involvement. These findings reinforce the relevance of Erving Goffman’s Dramaturgical Theory in explaining the role of religious leaders as social actors who build legitimacy, convey moral messages, and develop cross-sector collaboration. This study contributes to the development of the sociology of religion and provides practical implications for local governments, religious institutions, customary institutions, and communities in strengthening community-based drug abuse prevention strategies.

Abstract

Although the negative impacts of oil palm plantation development on the economic and social lives of communities and community development have been widely studied, research specifically analyzing the role of religious leaders in addressing the resulting social impacts remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the role of religious leaders in addressing the negative impacts of oil palm plantation development in Ranah Koto Tinggi Village, Koto Balingka Subdistrict, West Pasaman Regency. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design through field research, involving 12 informants selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation and were subsequently analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which comprises data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that religious leaders performed two main roles, namely as religious leaders and community members. These roles were manifested through religious guidance, family assistance, youth development, religious consultation, and persuasive approaches to entertainment venue owners (pakter). Although various efforts had been undertaken, their effectiveness remained suboptimal because of economic and social factors that allowed deviant practices to persist. These findings reinforce the relevance of Erving Goffman’s Dramaturgical Theory in explaining the function of religious leaders as agents of social control amid social changes resulting from oil palm plantation development. This study contributes to the development of the sociology of religion and emphasizes the importance of synergy among religious leaders, the village government, ninik mamak, and the community in formulating more comprehensive prevention strategies to address the negative social impacts of oil palm plantation development.

Abstract

Although the formation of Generation Z identity in the digital era has been widely studied, research specifically examining the process of forming a new identity through the Islamic boarding school environment from the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social practice remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the process of forming a new identity among Generation Z at Pondok Pesantren Al Fatah Nurul Huda, Koto Gadang Jaya Village, Kinali Subdistrict, West Pasaman Regency. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design. The research informants comprised 19 individuals selected through purposive sampling, including Islamic boarding school administrators, teachers, students, village officials, and members of the surrounding community. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation and were subsequently analyzed using an interactive analysis model comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the formation of a new identity among Generation Z occurred through a continuous habituation process within Islamic boarding school life and resulted in four forms of identity: religious identity, socio-religious identity, Islamic identity, and Islamic social-interaction identity. The formation of these identities occurred through the interaction of habitus, field, and capital, as explained in Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social practice. These findings broaden the literature on the sociology of Islamic education regarding the role of the Islamic boarding school environment in shaping Generation Z identity. Practically, the findings may serve as a reference for Islamic boarding school administrators, Islamic educational institutions, and parents in strengthening the character development of younger generations through the habituation of religious values. Future research may examine the formation of Generation Z identity across various types of Islamic boarding schools and other Islamic educational contexts. Abstract

Although learning burnout can reduce santri motivation, concentration, and engagement in learning, studies on caregivers’ strategies for addressing this condition in Islamic boarding school settings remain limited. This study aimed to describe caregivers’ strategies for addressing learning burnout among santri at Pondok Muhlihatus Sholihin Pasuruan. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research informants consisted of pesantren caregivers, ustaz, and santri selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation and were subsequently analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which comprises data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data trustworthiness was strengthened through source triangulation, method triangulation, and member checking. The findings showed that caregivers addressed learning burnout through three main strategies, namely identifying symptoms of learning fatigue at an early stage, applying a personal approach accompanied by motivation and the management of santri activities, and strengthening spiritual guidance through congregational prayers, dhikr, Qur’an recitation, and religious lectures. The implementation of these strategies increased learning motivation, improved concentration, restored enthusiasm for participating in learning activities, and created more stable emotional conditions among santri. These findings affirm that caregiving strategies combining psychological, educational, and spiritual approaches play an important role in reducing learning burnout and supporting the creation of a more effective learning process within the Islamic boarding school environment. This study provides practical implications for pesantren administrators in developing caregiving practices that are responsive to the academic, emotional, and spiritual needs of santri.

Abstract

Although children’s hadhanah rights following divorce have been widely examined from the perspective of Islamic family law, studies specifically analyzing their fulfillment in Generation Z families through Legal Protection Theory and Maqāṣid asy-Syarī‘ah remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the practice of fulfilling children’s hadhanah rights in Generation Z families following divorce, the factors influencing their fulfillment, and their conformity with the objectives of Maqāṣid asy-Syarī‘ah. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design and involved four informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation and were subsequently analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which comprises data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings showed that formal hadhanah rights rested with the mother, but daily caregiving was predominantly undertaken by the grandparents because economic demands required the mother to work. The father’s involvement in caregiving and the provision of child maintenance remained low, while economic conditions, parental emotional unpreparedness, and digital device use were factors influencing the implementation of hadhanah. From the perspective of Maqāṣid asy-Syarī‘ah, the fulfillment of hadhanah rights partially realized welfare, particularly in the preservation of religion (hifẓ al-dīn) and the fulfillment of the child’s physical needs (hifẓ al-nafs), but was not yet optimal in ensuring the child’s psychological protection and intellectual development (hifẓ al-‘aql). These findings contribute to the development of Philipus M. Hadjon’s Legal Protection Theory by integrating the principle of the best interest of the child and Maqāṣid asy-Syarī‘ah in assessing the effectiveness of fulfilling hadhanah rights following divorce. This study affirms the importance of strengthening the responsibilities of both parents and the effectiveness of legal protection to ensure the substantive fulfillment of children’s rights.

Abstract

Arrogance (takabbur) constitutes a fundamental moral deviation in Islamic ethics that undermines individual spirituality and social harmony. This study aims to interpret the Qur’anic prohibition of arrogance, particularly in Surah Luqman verse 18, through the tafsīr maqāṣidī framework developed by Wasfi ‘Asyur Abu Zayd. Employing qualitative library research, the study drew primary data from the Qur’an and Abu Zayd’s Naḥwa al-Tafsīr al-Maqāṣidī li al-Qur’ān al-Karīm, supplemented by classical and contemporary exegetical literature. The data were analyzed through textual examination, inductive reasoning, maqāṣid formulation, and interpretive verification. The findings reveal that the prohibition of arrogance encompasses linguistic, conceptual, and ethical dimensions, manifested through self-aggrandizement, contempt for others, and rejection of truth, and driven by pride in knowledge, lineage, wealth, or social status. The maqāṣid khāṣṣah of Surah Luqman verse 18 is identified as ḥifẓ al-karāmah al-insāniyyah, or the protection of human dignity, which is actualized through the cultivation of tawāḍu‘ and the establishment of egalitarian social relations. This objective extends beyond individual moral reform by providing a normative foundation for rejecting status-based humiliation and image-driven superiority. Verification through classical and contemporary exegetical perspectives further demonstrates that the verse functions as an ethical framework for realizing relational justice in both conventional and digital social contexts, including responses to social climbing (pansos) and narcissistic self-presentation. By grounding human worth in piety rather than worldly distinctions, this study contributes a Qur’anic ethical framework for fostering humility, mutual respect, human dignity, and harmonious coexistence within diverse societies.

Abstract

Differences in students’ initial abilities to recognize hijaiyah letters, articulate the correct points of pronunciation, apply tajwid rules and proper vowel lengths, and read fluently and accurately pose challenges in Qur’an learning. This study aimed to describe the implementation of the Wafa method in improving students’ Qur’an reading fluency at SDIT Al-Adzkia Sentul, Jombang, and to identify the factors supporting and inhibiting its implementation. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and were then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that the Wafa method was implemented systematically through a right-brain approach, the use of the Hijaz melody, talaqqi, demonstration, repeated practice (drills), multisensory learning, and periodic evaluation. The implementation of this method supported improvements in Qur’an reading fluency, particularly in the accuracy of articulation points, application of tajwid rules, reading fluency, and students’ self-confidence. Its successful implementation was supported by teacher competence, the availability of learning media, school support, and students’ enthusiasm. The inhibiting factors included differences in initial ability, limited instructional time, and insufficient practice at home. This study concludes that the Wafa method can serve as a systematic, engaging, and adaptive alternative for Qur’an learning that meets students’ needs. These findings provide practical implications for schools and teachers in designing instruction that supports continuous improvement in Qur’an reading fluency.

Abstract

Indonesia’s sociocultural diversity requires an educational approach that can address intolerance and radicalism while strengthening social cohesion. This study analyzes the integration of moderate Islamic values (wasathiyyah) into the Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka) and examines its implications for students’ character development. Employing qualitative library research, the study drew primary data from official policy documents, particularly Regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Number 12 of 2024, and secondary data from relevant academic journal articles and books. The data were systematically examined through content analysis, with source triangulation used to enhance the validity of the findings. The analysis reveals that moderate Islamic values are integrated at three interconnected levels: philosophical, curricular, and pedagogical. At the philosophical level, the curriculum aligns a humanistic educational paradigm with the principle of rahmatan lil ‘alamin. At the curricular level, the values of tawassuth, tasamuh, and i’tidal are aligned with the dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile and the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5). At the pedagogical level, differentiated instruction, pedagogical flexibility, and dialogical-contextual learning facilitate meaningful engagement with religious and national values. Collectively, these forms of integration have important implications for fostering inclusive character, reducing exclusivism, and preventing radicalism within educational institutions while reinforcing harmony between religious commitment and national belonging (al-muwathanah). The study concludes that integrating moderate Islamic values into the Independent Curriculum represents a paradigmatic shift from textual-doctrinal transmission toward contextual-axiological character formation. These findings contribute a conceptual and policy-based foundation for developing contemporary Islamic Religious Education curricula and advancing inclusive educational practices in Indonesia.

Abstract

Physical Education has strong pedagogical potential to develop character through direct experiences of complying with rules, competing, cooperating, making rapid decisions, and confronting social consequences. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of traditional game-based Physical Education instruction that explicitly integrates moral values, including honesty, trustworthiness, justice, self-control, respect, and ta‘āwun, in improving sportsmanship and cooperation among students in the Primary School Teacher Education Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The study employs a mixed-methods approach with a quasi-experimental design involving an intervention group and a comparison group, as well as pretest–posttest measurements. Data were collected through measurements of sportsmanship and cooperation, behavioral observations, and students’ written reflections. Moral values were operationalized through game rules, role rotation, conflict-resolution mechanisms, post-activity reflection, and behavioral assessment. Quantitative data were analyzed to examine changes in sportsmanship and cooperation, whereas qualitative data were analyzed thematically to explain how students interpreted competitive dilemmas and pedagogical responsibilities. Because the results presented in the manuscript are still based on simulated data, empirical conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the intervention cannot yet be established, and all such results must be replaced with field data. Conceptually, this study offers a character education framework that connects normative values with embodied learning practices in Physical Education for prospective primary school teachers.

Abstract

Although mu’āsyarah bi al-ma‘rūf has been widely discussed as an ethical principle in marital relationships, studies examining its application to conflict resolution among couples with a religious education remain limited. This study aims to analyze how couples with a religious education understand the principle of mu’āsyarah bi al-ma‘rūf, identify the dynamics of family conflict, and explore the application of this principle to conflict resolution. This study employed a qualitative approach with a field-study design in Situ Gede Urban Village. Data were collected through interviews with newly married and long-married couples, prospective brides and grooms, marriage registrars, officers of the Marriage Advisory, Development, and Preservation Agency (BP4), and religious leaders and were subsequently analyzed descriptively according to the research themes. The findings indicate that mu’āsyarah bi al-ma‘rūf is understood as the principle of treating one’s spouse with gentleness, attentiveness, respect, affection, acceptance of shortcomings, and fulfillment of rights and obligations. Family conflicts were primarily triggered by differences in character, habits, mindsets, and egos; communication and financial problems; long-distance relationships; and interference from extended family members. This principle was applied through emotional and ego control, self-reflection, acceptance of one’s spouse, open communication, dialogue, deliberation, clarification, and the involvement of family members, religious leaders, the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA), or BP4 when necessary. Religious values serve as a normative and spiritual foundation for guiding conflict resolution. However, religious education only provides a foundation for understanding and does not automatically guarantee couples’ ability to practice mu’āsyarah bi al-ma‘rūf in emotionally charged situations. These findings underscore the importance of integrating religious understanding, self-control, and constructive communication into family conflict resolution and have implications for strengthening premarital education and religious values-based family development programs.
