Abstract

The focus of this article is to examine Will Kymlicka’s thoughts on the concept of multicultural citizenship and to analyze its relevance to Indonesia’s pluralistic education system. Kymlicka emphasizes the importance of recognizing the cultural identities of minority groups within the framework of a democratic nation-state. The aim of this paper is to explore his ideas and reconstruct a shared awareness in understanding education in Indonesia. In the context of Indonesia’s multicultural society, this approach becomes significant in fostering an inclusive collective consciousness and ensuring social justice for all ethnic, religious, and cultural groups. This article employs a qualitative approach through literature review of Kymlicka’s works and analysis of educational policies and practices in Indonesia. The results of the analysis show that the application of multicultural citizenship principles can strengthen civic education that is democratic, tolerant, and equitable. Education that is responsive to diversity not only supports social cohesion but also serves as a vital foundation for maintaining national unity amid complex identities. Therefore, integrating multicultural values into the curriculum and learning process is an urgent necessity in the national education system.

Abstract

Ongoing environmental degradation across numerous nature-based tourist destinations shows that tourism-driven economic activity often proceeds without an adequate foundation of environmental ethics and ecological awareness. This research aims to analyze the environmental ethics and ecological awareness practices of managers, business actors, and tourists in the Lubuk Bonta tourism area through an eco-philosophy approach grounded in Arne Naess's deep ecology, which places the relationship between God, humans, and nature as a unified spiritual and ecological whole. The method used is a qualitative approach with exploratory case studies. Informants were selected purposively, comprising a manager who is also a kiosk owner, business actors, and visitors directly involved in tourism activities. Data were collected through field observation, semi-structured in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results show that the interaction between humans and nature in this area is driven not only by economic functions but also by the informants' moral and spiritual values. Managers regard nature as a trust to be safeguarded, reflected in the provision of trash bins and the prohibition of littering, while the ban on fishing in the bathing area represents a culturally inherited eco-centric value. Visitors likewise display ecological awareness that grows out of direct experience, even proposing participatory initiatives such as bringing personal trash bags. These values do not merely emerge as compliance with formal rules but arise from the informants' moral and spiritual understanding of their obligation to protect the environment. Unlike previous studies that tend to focus on the technical and policy aspects of tourism environmental management, this research contributes by revealing the philosophical-personal dimension underlying everyday ecological practices, while affirming the relevance of eco-philosophy as an analytical framework for a more ethical, sustainable, and spiritually meaningful management of nature tourism.

Abstract

This article examines Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s notion of the “existential human” through the lens of Alfred North Whitehead’s philosophy of organism. The central question is the extent to which Merleau-Ponty’s description of the human as always being-in-the-world through the body, habit, and intercorporeal relations can be rendered coherent within Whitehead’s view of reality as process—composed of actual entities, prehension, concrescence, and personally ordered society. The study employs a qualitative philosophical approach with a one-way, heuristic reconstruction: key concepts from Merleau-Ponty are mapped analogically onto Whitehead’s process categories by means of explicit rules, then stress-tested via the deliberate search for failure points to assess coherence. Three principal findings emerge. First, both frameworks reject substantialism and dualism while emphasizing relationality and temporality; coherence can be maintained insofar as the difference between phenomenological-descriptive status and speculative-ontological status is preserved. Second, bodily habit and intercorporeality can be understood as the continuity of prehensive patterns, elucidating the relative stability of the self amid ongoing becoming. Third, clear limits remain: intentionality is not identical with prehension; la chair correlates only weakly with the extensive continuum; and there is a scale gap between phenomenological lived time and cosmological concrescence. The article concludes that the human can plausibly be conceived as an embodied process—a conclusion warranted only as a careful, heuristic reconstruction. Implications extend to action theory, relational ethics, and dialogue with enactive cognitive science.

Abstract

This article argues that development conflicts in Indonesia cannot be adequately understood if approached solely as issues of public policy, political economy, or administrative governance. Beneath these conflicts operates a more fundamental assumption: a linear-progressive conception of time treated as a universal framework within modern development paradigms. Using a philosophical-qualitative approach, the article examines development as a crisis of temporality—namely, the failure to recognize the plurality of social, ecological, and cultural temporalities embedded in lived realities. Through a comparative analysis of Indian and Chinese philosophies of time, the article shows that time is not merely a technical parameter but a structure of meaning that binds human action to limits, rhythms, and intergenerational responsibility. Indian cyclical cosmology and the Daoist notion of natural rhythm offer a normative critique of the dominant logics of acceleration, intervention, and limitless growth in modern development. Drawing on the perspective of chronopolitics, the article further explains how the modern state governs society through temporal instruments—deadlines, targets, and future-oriented narratives—that frequently clash with local temporalities. Read against development cases in Indonesia, particularly agrarian and ecological conflicts in Papua and other regions, these tensions appear as part of a broader structural pattern across the Global South. The article concludes that sustainable development requires an ethical reorientation that recognizes temporal plurality as a normative variable rather than a technical obstacle, reframing development not primarily as a matter of efficiency and growth, but as a question of whose time counts and for whom development is carried out.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of the erosion of knowledge authority in contemporary society, particularly within the post-truth era characterized by the weakening legitimacy of expertise and the growing dominance of public opinion shaped by emotion, identity, and personal preference. Scientific authority, which has traditionally been grounded in rationality, systematic methodology, and empirical verification, is increasingly questioned, especially in strategic issues such as public health, climate change, and digital technology. This research employs a qualitative approach through philosophical and epistemological analysis to identify the factors contributing to the delegitimization of scientific authority. The findings indicate that the erosion of knowledge authority is influenced by two primary dimensions: internal and external factors. Internal factors include cognitive biases, logical fallacies, and psychological tendencies that were classically anticipated in Francis Bacon’s concept of idols. External factors encompass the transformation of the digital landscape, social media algorithms, the attention economy, weak journalistic practices, and low levels of media literacy. The interaction between these factors creates a condition in which popularity often replaces credibility, and emotional narratives exert greater influence than rational argumentation. This study concludes that the crisis of scientific authority is not merely a failure of experts, but a broader epistemological problem embedded within the social and cultural structures of digital modernity. Therefore, strengthening critical literacy, revitalizing ethical scientific communication, and deep philosophical reflection are necessary steps toward restoring public trust in knowledge grounded in scientific methods.

Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct the meaning of the Sapa Salah Seleh philosophy in shaping civic spirituality in society through a hermeneutic perspective. This philosophy represents the moral value that every mistake will be revealed in one's life, thus emphasizing the importance of honesty as part of individual integrity. In the Javanese cultural context, this value is reinforced by social norms that impose sanctions in the form of acceptance or rejection from society. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting data through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data validity was ensured through triangulation of sources and methods, while data analysis employed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, encompassing data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the Sapa Salah Seleh philosophy has significant significance in shaping civic spirituality in society, as reflected in: (1) the relevance of moral values as a foundation for developing civic attitudes with integrity; and (2) its philosophical function as an ethical guide that integrates the dimensions of religiosity and character in social life. Thus, reconstructing the meaning of this philosophy through a hermeneutic approach strengthens the role of local wisdom in developing civic spirituality in society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the crisis of tolerance among the digital generation from the perspective of the philosophy of education and to examine the relevance of multiculturalism as an ethical foundation for education in addressing the challenges of the digital age. The study employs a library research method with a philosophical-qualitative approach, involving a review of various books, scientific journals, and relevant academic sources. The analysis is conducted descriptively and interpretatively to identify key concepts and construct an argumentative synthesis regarding the relationship between multicultural education and the formation of tolerant attitudes. The findings indicate that the rise of intolerance in digital spaces is not only influenced by technological advancements and social media but also by the insufficient internalization of ethical values in education. Education that remains focused on cognitive aspects is deemed insufficient in fostering students’ moral awareness when confronting diversity. Therefore, multiculturalism needs to be reconstructed as an educational ethic that serves as the foundation for curriculum development, school culture, and teaching practices. The integration of digital literacy and multicultural values through dialogue, empathy, and respect for differences is expected to foster a tolerant, inclusive, and civilized generation in the digital age.

Abstract

This article attempts to reconstruct human dignity, not from a purely biological or rationalistic perspective, but from the perspective of consciousness itself. In modern discourse, humans are frequently regarded as mere aggregates of evolved cells or cognitive machines, with their worth assessed by their intelligence or productivity. This perspective is closely tied to a technocratic logic that positions humans as biological systems that can be controlled and optimized, or rational agents whose primary task is to produce. Through a critical-philosophical approach and a hermeneutic reading of various sources, this article highlights the shortcomings of biological and rationalistic perspectives in understanding the experience of consciousness and the depths of the human mind. As a solution, the author offers the concept of svayam prakāśa from the Advaita Vedānta tradition as the ontological basis for human dignity. Consciousness, here, is not merely a side effect of the body or mind, but a self-illuminating reality, requiring no object, and independent of anything external to itself. Thus, humans not only “have” consciousness; they are consciousness itself. Human dignity emerges from within, is ontologically inherent, and is independent of the body, intelligence, or empirical conditions. The main contribution of this article is to shift the perspective from humans as tools or machines to a deeper understanding of existence, especially in a world increasingly dominated by technological logic.

Abstract

This study examines the philosophical meaning of Prajāpati in the nebus urip ritual among Hindu communities through the perspective of Śiva Siddhānta Philosophy. This study stems from the community's understanding of urip as the power and continuity of life, which shares a correspondence in meaning with the concept of prāṇa in the Prāśna Upaniṣad, particularly II.7, which links prāṇa with Prajāpati as the force sustaining life. The study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, coding, thematic categorization, interpretation, and synthesis. Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics serves as the interpretive framework to bridge community experience, tradition, religious texts, and philosophical perspectives. The results show that nebus urip is not merely a ritual act to request or preserve life, but holds symbolic meaning regarding the balance between ātman, prāṇa, and human life in relation to Sang Hyang Prajāpati. The concept of urip corresponds to prāṇa as the vital life force, while the state of ngelayang-ngelayung represents physical and spiritual life imbalance. From the perspective of Śiva Siddhānta, the preservation of urip reflects an effort to achieve a harmonious, peaceful life aligned between the sekala (manifest/physical) and niskala (unmanifest/spiritual) dimensions. Thus, the philosophy of Prajāpati in nebus urip illustrates the interconnection among creation, life force, cosmic balance, and human spiritual consciousness.

Abstract

Work is a domain where individuals serve and dedicate themselves to the community, as well as a means of devotion to God. In practice, the work environment is often perceived as daunting. Some individuals suggest that the professional world may impose pressures that result in stress and mental health challenges. Consequently, developing an effective work model is essential to ensure that work activities are enjoyable and fulfilling. This research employs a qualitative methodology that integrates Hindu philosophical perspectives and social theology. The data collection method adopted is library research, which involves the procurement of relevant journals pertaining to dharma, professional work, and social welfare. Additionally, news items from mainstream media are gathered. The collected data are subsequently compiled for analysis and review in alignment with theories of professional work, with the aim of presenting the findings in an academic journal. This research introduces the Dharmic Professionalism model, a work paradigm grounded in dharma that offers a philosophical foundation for a more service-oriented, harmonious approach to professionalism. It underscores the importance of public service over personal or collective interests, with the aim of promoting social welfare.
