Abstract

Cosmetics are pharmaceutical products supervised by the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM). In Bengkulu Province, cosmetics are sold in stores, salons, clinics, and traditional markets as well as online. Traditional markets primarily reach lower-middle-class consumers, who often exploit the lack of consumer awareness. Beauty clinics and cosmetic stores reach upper-middle-class consumers, who also have the potential for the distribution of cosmetics without a distribution permit (illegal) through purchases from unauthorized distribution channels. Meanwhile, the growth of the online market and the lack of oversight allow illegal cosmetics from marketplaces to be sold in stores and traditional markets. This study aims to describe the distribution profile of illegal cosmetics in Bengkulu Province through cosmetic distribution channels and traditional markets, as well as their relationship to online sales. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution profile of illegal cosmetics in Bengkulu Province. The study was conducted by collecting oversight data of BPOM in Bengkulu through field inspections and freight forwarding services. The results showed that illegal cosmetics found in cosmetic distribution channels were dominated by skincare products (60.8%), which are categorized as imported and relabelled cosmetics with unknown hazardous ingredients. In traditional markets, the most commonly found illegal cosmetics are day creams (50.5%), lip makeup (37.5%), and night creams (6.9%), most of which contain the hazardous ingredient mercury. Online monitoring revealed that illegal cosmetics were dominated by day creams (33.8%), facial toners (25.4%), whitening (18.1%), and solid body wash (13.3%), all of which contain the hazardous ingredient mercury and a combination of retinoic acid and hydroquinone. This study concluded that traditional markets are at greatest risk of distributing illegal cosmetics containing hazardous ingredients.

Abstract

Recurrent implantation failure (RIF) is a major cause of in vitro fertilization (IVF) failure and remains a significant challenge in assisted reproductive technology. RIF is frequently associated with impaired endometrial receptivity, particularly in women with thin endometrium. Conventional treatments have shown inconsistent outcomes, highlighting the need for alternative therapeutic approaches. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as a potential strategy to improve endometrial quality and receptivity. This study aimed to systematically review the role of PRP in improving reproductive outcomes in patients with RIF. This study was conducted as a systematic literature review using PubMed, Dimensions, and European PMC databases. Article searches were performed using the keywords “Platelet Rich Plasma,” “Recurrent Implantation Failure,” and “Fertility Outcome” with boolean operators and MeSH terms. Randomized controlled trials and retrospective cohort studies published between 2015 and 2025 were included. Article screening was conducted using Zotero and Rayyan. From 108 articles, 16 studies met the inclusion criteria and were qualitatively analyzed. The findings indicate that intrauterine PRP administration in patients with RIF is associated with improvements in endometrial thickness, implantation rate, biochemical pregnancy, clinical pregnancy, and live birth rate compared to standard therapy. The most consistent benefits were observed in patients with thin endometrium (≤7 mm), while outcomes in patients with normal endometrial thickness varied across studies. PRP shows promise as a safe and effective adjuvant therapy to enhance endometrial receptivity and pregnancy outcomes in patients with RIF. Further well-designed randomized controlled trials with standardized PRP protocols are required to establish its clinical efficacy.

Abstract

Aloe vera L. has considerable potential as a natural ingredient for oral preparations; however, the inherent bitterness of its leaf powder limits patient acceptability. Effervescent granules were selected to improve convenience and palatability, in which sweeteners may influence both taste and physical performance. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of sweetener type on the physical characteristics of Aloe vera effervescent granules. Granules were prepared by wet granulation using aspartame (F1) and stevia (F2). Evaluations included organoleptic properties, moisture content, flow time, angle of repose, and dispersion time. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann–Whitney U test for moisture content and Welch’s t-test for other parameters. Both formulations met general quality requirements for effervescent granules. No significant differences were observed in moisture content and dispersion time (p > 0.05). However, flow time and angle of repose differed significantly (p < 0.05). F1 showed faster flow time (1.55 ± 0.05 s) and lower angle of repose (20.40 ± 1.07°) compared to F2 (2.30 ± 0.26 s; 24.70 ± 1.35°), indicating better flowability. These findings suggest that sweetener type significantly influences granule flow properties but not moisture stability or dispersion performance

Abstract

Rosella petals contain anthocyanins, and calamansi orange peel essential oil contains limonene, both of which are antioxidant compounds. Antioxidants capture free radicals, allowing them to serve as active ingredients in preventing premature aging in skincare products such as body lotions. This study was aimed to formulate and test of the antioxidant level from body lotion formula containing roselle petal extract (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) and calamansi orange peel essential oil (Citrofortunella microcarpa). Roselle petal extract was extracted by maceration method using 96% ethanol and calamansi essential oil was obtained by distillation using aquades. Body lotion formula was designed in three formulas (F1, F2, and F3) with differing concentrations of roselle extract and calamansi essential oil, respectively: F1 (1% and 3%), F2 (2% and 5%), and F3 (4% and 7%). The formulations were evaluated their physical properties (organoleptic characteristics, homogeneity, pH, spread ability, viscosity, and stability) and also antioxidant activity. The evaluation results were indicated that all formulations met physical standards but were unstable under heat. F1, F2, and F3 were semi-solid, homogeneous, pink in color, and had a distinctive calamansi aroma. The antioxidant evaluation yielded IC₅₀ values of 89.9 ppm, 81.7 ppm, and 69.7 ppm for F1, F2, and F3, respectively. In this study can be concluded that F3 formula had the highest antioxidant activity. This study was demonstrated that increasing the concentration both of roselle petal extract and essential oil of calamansi enhanced the antioxidant degree of body lotion formula.

Abstract

Adherence to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy is a key factor in the success of HIV treatment to achieve viral suppression and prevent drug resistance. Various demographic and clinical factors are presumed to influence patients’ adherence levels. This study aimed to analyze the association between sex, population type, clinical stage, and history of loss to follow up (LFU) with ARV adherence in OKI District. This study employed an analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 37 respondents receiving ARV therapy were included in the study. Data were analyzed bivariately using the chi-square test to determine the association between independent variables and ARV adherence level, with a significance level of 0.05. The majority of respondents demonstrated adherence levels >95%. Bivariate analysis showed no significant association between sex (p=0.203), population type (p=0.205), clinical stage (p=0.611), and history of LFU (p=0.099) with ARV adherence (p>0.05).  Sex, population type, clinical stage, and history of LFU were not significantly associated with ARV adherence. However, retention in care remains an important aspect in maintaining treatment continuity. Strengthening counseling, routine monitoring, and comprehensive service approaches are necessary to sustain optimal adherence levels.

Abstract

Sea grapes are members of the Caulerpaceae algae family that have a thallus-like structure, a structure that can form chains or branches, and have small grains that resemble grapes, hence the name sea grapes. Furthermore, various modern studies have shown that Caulerpa racemosa contains important secondary metabolites, especially flavonoid compounds.  Flavonoids are a group of phenolic compounds found in almost all parts of plants, especially in the outer layer of leaves and fruit skin. The purpose of this study was to determine the total flavonoid content of 70% and 96% ethanol extracts of sea grape plants found in Teluk Sepang Beach, Bengkulu City. The method used was UV-Vis spectrophotometry with an aluminum chloride (AlCl₃) complexation colorimetric approach. This technique is relatively easy, fast, highly sensitive, and can be successfully applied to various extracts derived from natural materials, producing reliable results if accompanied by method validation. Measurement of flavonoid levels using quercetin as a comparison at a maximum wavelength of 430 nm and obtained a linear regression equat ion y = 0.0096x + 0.0535 and R2 = 0.9729. The total flavonoid content of 70% ethanol extract was 12.6 ± 0.16 mg QE/g and 96% ethanol extract was 44,1 ± 0.29 mg QE/g. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that 96% ethanol extract has a greater flavonoid content than 70% ethanol extract. Statistical analysis using the independent sample t-test confirmed a significant difference between the two treatments (p<0.05). This study concluded that 96% ethanol is a more effective solvent for extracting flavonoid compounds from Caulerpa racemosa than 70% ethanol, this shows that the difference does not occur by chance, but is a real effect of the difference in ethanol concentration in extraction.

Abstract

Sandalwood oil possesses anti-inflammatory potential for sunburn management; however, its volatility and low water solubility limit topical effectiveness. Aloe vera is widely known for its effectiveness as a skin moisturizer and anti-inflammatory. The combination of sandalwood oil and aloe vera in a nanoemulgel-based topical formulation has great potential for development. Nanoemulgel systems may enhance stability and skin delivery, while the type of gelling agent critically influences physical characteristics and stability. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different gelling agents on the physical characteristics and stability of sandalwood oil-aloe vera nanoemulgel. Methods: Three nanoemulgel formulations were prepared using different cellulose derivative gelling agents (MC, HPMC, and HEC). Physical evaluations included organoleptic assessment, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesiveness, particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), and centrifugation stability testing. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA (p<0.05). All formulations showed acceptable pH and homogeneous nano-sized droplets (30–50 nm) with PDI <0.35. Significant differences were observed in viscosity and particle size (p<0.05). The HEC-based formulation exhibited the highest viscosity and the smallest particle size. Increased viscosity was associated with reduced droplet mobility and improved physical stability. Spreadability showed an inverse relationship with viscosity, while adhesiveness was not significantly different among formulations. All formulations remained physically stable without phase separation after centrifugation. The type of gelling agent significantly affected the physical characteristics of nanoemulgel, and the HEC-based formulation demonstrated the most optimal performance in characteristics and physical stability.

Abstract

Fever is a common health condition frequently managed through traditional medicine using medicinal plants based on inherited local knowledge. This study aimed to document the species of medicinal plants, plant parts used, preparation methods, and modes of administration employed by traditional healers to treat fever in Talang Pauh Village, Pondok Kelapa District, Central Bengkulu Regency. This research was a descriptive observational study with a qualitative approach. A total sampling technique was applied involving 12 traditional healers. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and direct observation, then analyzed descriptively and presented in tables and narrative form. The results identified 29 plant species utilized for fever treatment. The plant species most frequently used by traditional healers is melur (Jasminum sambac L) Leaves were the most commonly used plant part, followed by rhizomes, roots, bark, corms, and coconut water. Boiling was the predominant preparation method, and oral administration was the most common mode of use, in addition to compressing, topical application, and bathing. The dominance of leaf usage reflects considerations of availability, ease of processing, and sustainability. These findings indicate that traditional medicinal practices in Talang Pauh Village remain well preserved and hold potential for further scientific investigation to support the development of evidence-based herbal medicine rooted in local wisdom.

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing health threat and has the potential to increase morbidity, mortality, and the economic burden on health care. One of the main factors driving the development of AMR is the irrational use of antibiotics, including the practice of dispensing antibiotics without a doctor's prescription in pharmaceutical service facilities. To strengthen control of antibiotic use, the regional government issued a Regional Head Circular (SE) which emphasized that antibiotics may only be dispensed with a doctor's prescription. This study aims to analyze the results of BPOM monitoring of antibiotic dispensing compliance at pharmacies in Bengkulu Province before and after the issuance of the Regional Head Circular. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a before-after study approach based on BPOM monitoring data at the same 42 pharmacies in Bengkulu Province in 2024 and 2025. The analysis was conducted descriptively and comparatively using the McNemar test for paired data with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results showed that before the Circular was implemented, only 3 pharmacies (7.1%) complied with dispensing antibiotics with a doctor's prescription, while 39 pharmacies (92.9%) still dispensed antibiotics without a prescription. After the issuance of the circular, 16 pharmacies (38.1%) were compliant, while 26 pharmacies (61.9%) remained non-compliant. The McNemar test showed a significant difference between the two periods. The issuance of the Regional Head's circular was associated with increased pharmacy compliance in dispensing antibiotics based on doctor's prescriptions
