Abstract

Speaking anxiety is a major challenge for students learning English as a foreign language. It often arises from fear of making mistakes, limited vocabulary, poor pronunciation, and the pressure of being judged. This study explores how English Education students at Mulawarman University experience and manage speaking anxiety. Using a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews involving three participants, data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns in causes, triggers, and coping strategies. The findings reveal that anxiety is most intense during formal tasks such as presentations or spontaneous questioning. Students adopt strategies like self-practice, note preparation, breathing techniques, self-recording, and peer support to reduce anxiety. These approaches gradually enhance confidence and improve speaking performance. The study concludes that emotional and instructional support from teachers and peers significantly reduces anxiety levels. Implications suggest that educators should foster supportive classroom environments and integrate reflective speaking practices to help students overcome fear and participate actively in English communication.

Abstract

This study investigates how active learning is conducted in EFL classroom discourse in Papua by combining Corpus Linguistics and Conversation Analysis (CA) framework. It specifically examines how lexical patterns and interactional organization jointly shape students’ communicative development from five datasets. A mini spoken corpus was constructed from the video-recorded lessons and analyzed for lexical frequency, collocations, and formulaic language. In terms of CA, turn-taking, repair practices, and teacher scaffolding of the classroom conversations were identified. The findings reveal systematic variation across task types. Genre-focused lessons are dominated by metalanguage and definitional bundles, reinforcing classification routines within teacher-controlled IRF sequences. While performance-based and narrative tasks generate longer student turns supported by formulaic expressions and temporal markers. This facilitates discourse expansion and storytelling competence. Grammar-driven descriptive tasks prioritize structural templates, promoting accuracy but limiting lexical diversity. Across datasets, formulaic language functions as an interactional scaffold that enables participation despite limited grammatical complexity. However, repair practices operate as learning opportunities. The study demonstrates that communicative growth in active EFL classrooms is strongly shaped by task design and pedagogical orientation. Narrative and pragmatic performance tasks foster greater interactional competence than taxonomy-driven instruction. As for the methodology, the combination of corpus linguistics and CA framework provides a comprehensive account of how lexical recycling, scaffolding, and sequential organization provide learning opportunities in real-time classroom interaction. The findings offer pedagogical implications for designing tasks that expand learner autonomy and promote sustained student talk in multilingual and under-researched contexts such as Papua.

Abstract

This research examines the influence of 360-degree web-based resources on improving English-speaking proficiency in students, emphasizing their effects on engagement and educational outcomes. Results demonstrate a notable enhancement in speaking abilities, with average scores increasing from 70.5 to 85.7 following the intervention, thereby illustrating the effectiveness of immersive learning environments. The interactive characteristics of 360-degree materials engage students, promote self-directed learning, and cater to various learning styles, while also offering opportunities for practice in real-world contexts. The study highlights the significant role of social interaction enabled by immersive tools, where peer collaboration improves communicative competence through meaningful dialogue and negotiation of meaning. The findings indicate potential; however, the mixed feedback from 35% of students highlights the necessity for continuous evaluation and adjustment of these educational resources to adequately address diverse learner expectations. This study identifies critical deficiencies in comprehending the specific attributes of 360-degree materials that most effectively enhance engagement and learning outcomes among varied student demographics. The website platform that hosts these 360-degree materials is essential to the educational process. It functions as a delivery mechanism for immersive content while also improving interactivity via user-friendly interfaces and accessibility options. This allows students to access materials at any time and from any location, fostering a flexible learning environment that accommodates individual needs. The implications for language education suggest the need for a multifaceted approach that incorporates immersive technologies into curricula, while promoting collaboration among educators, technologists, and curriculum developers to establish dynamic learning environments. Future research should prioritize longitudinal studies to evaluate the long-term impacts of 360-degree materials on language acquisition, examine their integration with other pedagogical strategies, including task-based and experiential learning, and explore effective teacher preparation for the utilisation of these technologies. Focusing on these areas will improve language education and result in more comprehensive educational practices and outcomes.

Abstract

This paper examines how romantic tone is carried across languages in film subtitling, where text must be brief, well-timed, and easy to read. We focus on Dilan 1990, a popular Indonesian teen romance known for playful, indirect lines that rely on inference and rhythm. Today, many studios generate first-pass subtitles with neural machine translation and then rely on human post-editors to refine style and timing. We ask how well AI handles this kind of subtle, affect-rich dialogue and where human editing still adds value. We compare 24 well-known lines addressed by Dilan to Milea in two versions: the official English subtitles and outputs produced by ChatGPT under the same line-level constraints. Using a practical set of translation techniques (e.g., modulation, compression, adaptation) and a tone rubric (playfulness/coyness, warmth, persona/rhythm), we perform a line-by-line analysis. The human subtitles tend to keep implicature and pace through concise, idiomatic choices that fit character and reading speed. The AI versions are fluent but more likely to explain subtext or lengthen the line, which can blunt teasing and shift the scene’s mood. AI can match human choices when the source line is already compact and direct. Where meaning depends on ellipsis, metaphor, and micro-timing, human post-editing remains crucial. We close with practical guidelines for NMT-plus-post-editing workflows in romance subtitling.

Abstract

The quality of news translation has a significant impact on global understanding and communication, especially in an era of rapid information exchange and international media consumption. Speeches by high-profile figures, such as presidents, monarchs, and public figures, carry substantial international importance. As one of the leading news portals, CNN Indonesia plays a vital role in translating such content; however, its quality has not been thoroughly examined. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach using a comparative conceptual method to analyze source and target texts. It applies Vinay and Darbelnet’s (1995) translation procedure theory and Nababan, Ardiana Nuraeni, and Sumardiono’s (2012) translation quality assessment model. Findings reveal that transposition is the most frequently used procedure (66%), followed by modulation and literal translation (13%) each. Correspondingly, the overall TQA score is 2.35 out of 3, comprising accuracy at 2.19, acceptability at 2.44, and readability at 2.71. These results indicate that while the translation achieves a high level of readability and acceptability, there remains room for improvement in accuracy to fully capture the nuances of the source text. This study contributes to translation studies by demonstrating how Vinay and Darbelnet’s procedures can inform effective linguistic and cultural strategies to enhance translation accuracy and comprehension. By emphasizing the role of strategic linguistic and cultural adaptation, the study offers practical insights for improving translation quality in journalistic contexts, particularly in political and ceremonial speeches.

Abstract

This study approaches Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” from a feminist-psychoanalytic perspective, examining how the act of writing serves as a mode of resistance for a woman silenced by patriarchal and medical authority. Through a close textual analysis informed by Freudian psychoanalytic concepts, the paper examines how Gilman constructs a psychological portrait of female confinement and rebellion. The narrator’s descent into madness is interpreted as both a symptom of the patriarchal suppression of female desire and an unconscious revolt against it. Gilman’s use of symbolism—the yellow wallpaper, the barred windows, and the creeping woman- encodes the internalisation of patriarchal control and the protagonist’s struggle to reclaim her identity. The study also examines the gendered power dynamics between the female protagonist and her husband, a physician, situating the story within the broader social and cultural context of nineteenth-century America. In effect, this paper argues that Gilman transforms “The Yellow Wallpaper” [3] into a timeless work of psychological and feminist insight, showing how literature can illuminate the human mind and the structures that shape it.

Abstract

Mastery in English medical terminology is crucial for health science students to engage with academic material, comprehend clinical information, and communicate successfully in professional settings. Many learners have ongoing challenges due to the lack of specialized, self-directed learning tools designed for their specific discipline and contextual requirements. This study performed the needs analysis phase of the ADDIE instructional design paradigm to examine the unique requirements for a self-learning e-module in English medical terminology. Data were gathered from 64 students participating in nursing, midwifery, and medical programs via a validated online questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with two faculty lecturers. The analysis investigated three dimensions: learners' needs, existing shortcomings, and favored learning modalities. The findings indicated that students necessitate terminology proficiency mainly for comprehending lectures, interpreting medical literature, and fulfilling academic tasks; encounter significant difficulties in contextual understanding, precise application, and pronunciation; and favor multimedia learning incorporating visual aids, interactive activities, and self-evaluation components. Instructors verified the absence of digital resources tailored to various disciplines that facilitate independent study. The results encourage the development of a mobile-compatible, multimedia-enhanced e-module to connect passive recognition with active application of medical terminology, promoting vocabulary proficiency and learner autonomy in English for Medical Purposes.

Abstract

The intense competition in the Indonesian cosmetics market is a factor in analyzing the linguistic strategies used to compete in this increasingly fierce market. Besides emphasizing product quality, taglines are the primary selling point and consumer attraction. This phenomenon has created two situations. Firstly brands that initially emphasized history and local culture have shifted to adopting foreign languages in their taglines. Secondly local brands that directly adopting foreign languages, not only in their brand names but also in their taglines. The methodology used in this research is a comparative discourse. That focuses on three core elements (the choice of language code, its function (indexicality), and its speech acts). This study consists of six brand taglines and 12 product taglines. All were collected from Instagram and e-commerce platforms in June 2025. The data were classified into two groups: 'Local Authenticity' (Sariayu, Mustika Ratu, Viva) and 'Global Aspiration' (Somethinc, Scarlett, Make Over). The findings of this study indicate that the 'Local Authenticity' group predominantly uses Indonesian in 55.56% of their taglines. This group is also dominant in assertive actions to index the values of trust and practicality. In contrast, ‘Global Aspiration’ group favored English in 77,78% of cases, predominantly using assertive and expressive act to build an identity indexing global trends and innovation. The conclusion of this study confirms that the choice of language in a beauty product tagline is a fundamental strategic step in market segmentation and building a brand identity that aligns with target consumers in the digital age. This provides brand writers and marketers with actionable insights into strategically indexing language codes to align brand identity with target market expectations.

Abstract

TikTok has quickly become one of the most widely used short-form video platforms worldwide, and its presence in language learning continues to grow. Although many digital-native learners engage with the platform daily, there is still limited research that brings together its pedagogical strengths and structural challenges in a systematic way. This study examines how TikTok can be integrated into language-learning contexts and what factors may limit its effective use. A systematic review of twenty peer-reviewed studies published between 2022 and 2024 was conducted to capture recent developments in post-pandemic digital learning. The selected studies focused on TikTok’s use in formal or semi-formal language-learning settings and were analyzed using qualitative thematic synthesis. The findings show that TikTok’s short-form and multimodal features support vocabulary development, speaking practice, pronunciation awareness, and learner engagement. Its brief and repeatable content encourages frequent exposure to language input. However, the platform’s entertainment-driven algorithm, limited capacity for deeper explanation, unequal digital access, and varying levels of teacher readiness pose challenges for structured classroom integration. Overall, TikTok offers meaningful pedagogical value when used intentionally within clear instructional frameworks. Its effectiveness depends on thoughtful alignment with learning objectives and careful integration into broader teaching strategies.
