Abstract

Memory is a vital biological system in the body that plays a role in storing, processing, and recalling information. Over time, due to aging or external factors, memory function may decline. One possible effort to maintain and improve cognitive performance is through the use of bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties. Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) leaves contain flavonoids, which act as antioxidants and possess neuroprotective effects that may enhance cognitive function, including memory. This study aimed to determine the effect of avocado leaf extract on the memory of male mice and to identify the most effective dose in improving cognitive performance. The extract was obtained using the maceration method with 70% ethanol as the solvent. Memory activity was tested on male mice, which were divided into five groups: negative control, positive control, and three treatment groups given avocado leaf extract at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kgBW. The Y-Maze method was employed to assess memory through two parameters: latency time and error numbers. The results demonstrated that avocado leaf extract significantly improved memory in the test animals. Mice induced with 10% ethanol showed an increase in latency time and error numbers, while the groups treated with avocado leaf extract experienced reductions in both parameters. The most effective dose was 200 mg/kgBW, which produced a latency time difference of 19.5 seconds and an error number difference of 3.57. Therefore, avocado leaf extract shows potential as a natural agent to support and enhance cognitive function.

Abstract

Epilepsy is one of the most common chronic neurological disorders and can affect women of reproductive age, including during pregnancy. Pregnancy in women with epilepsy (WWE) presents various clinical challenges due to the complex interaction between physiological changes in pregnancy, fluctuations in antiepileptic drug (AED) levels, and the increased risk of seizures. Seizures during pregnancy not only pose a threat to maternal safety but also carry potential complications for the fetus, such as hypoxia, trauma, and impaired uteroplacental blood flow. Therefore, the management of epilepsy during pregnancy requires a careful and comprehensive approach. This report presents the case of a 41-year-old woman, G4P2A1, at 37–38 weeks of gestation, who presented to the emergency obstetric unit at Cut Meutia General Hospital with complaints of contractions following three episodes of seizures within the previous 24 hours. The patient had a 16-year history of epilepsy and was on regular neurologist follow-up, but she had discontinued her AEDs three weeks prior due to medication unavailability. She underwent an elective cesarean section with concurrent fimbriectomy as a permanent contraceptive method. Postoperatively, the patient experienced status epilepticus and decreased consciousness for approximately 24 hours. A multidisciplinary approach involving neurologists was implemented, including AED administration, enteral nutrition, close monitoring of vital signs and urine output. The patient's condition gradually improved, and she was discharged on the seventh day in a stable condition with well-healed surgical wounds. This case highlights the importance of optimal seizure control during pregnancy. Preconception counseling, appropriate AED selection, and regular drug level monitoring are essential in minimizing maternal and fetal complications. A multidisciplinary collaboration between obstetricians and neurologists plays a crucial role in achieving favorable outcomes.

Abstract

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is an inflammatory condition of the lateral epicondyle commonly caused by repetitive overuse of the forearm extensor muscles. It is characterized by pain, limited joint range of motion, decreased muscle strength, and reduced functional capacity. Physiotherapy interventions, particularly ultrasound and exercise therapy, have been widely applied to reduce pain and restore functional performance. This study employed a case study design involving a 42-year-old female patient diagnosed with left-sided tennis elbow. The intervention was conducted over four therapy sessions. The modalities consisted of ultrasound, providing thermal and micromassage effects to reduce pain, combined with exercise therapy, including passive stretching to increase soft tissue flexibility and eccentric exercise to improve tendon strength and function. After four sessions, the patient showed significant improvement, including reduced pain during movement and palpation, increased joint range of motion in elbow flexion-extension, forearm pronation-supination, and wrist dorsiflexion-palmarflexion. Muscle strength, particularly in the extensors, pronators, supinators, and wrist dorsiflexors, also improved. Functional activity, measured using the PRTEE scale, demonstrated notable enhancement from mild disability to better functional independence. The combination of ultrasound, passive stretching, and eccentric exercise is effective in reducing pain, enhancing range of motion, strengthening muscles, and improving functional ability in patients with left-sided tennis elbow.

Abstract

Mosquito coil smoke is the most commonly used insecticide by the public for mosquito control. The main active ingredient in these products is a pyrethroid derivative called Allethrin, which can generate free radicals that potentially damage the kidneys. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of varying durations of exposure to mosquito coil smoke on the histopathological features of the kidneys in male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). The research employed a laboratory experimental method with a Post-Test Only Group Design. A total of 24 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: a control group without treatment and three treatment groups exposed to mosquito coil smoke for 5 hours, 7 hours, and 9 hours per day over 21 days. After the treatment period, the rats were euthanized by cervical dislocation, their kidneys were harvested, and histopathological preparations were made and scored using the Venient et al. scoring system. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests revealed significant differences in kidney damage between the control and treatment groups (p < 0.001). The study concluded that varying durations of exposure to mosquito coil smoke cause significant differences in kidney histopathological damage in rats, with the most severe damage observed in the group exposed for 9 hours per day.

Abstract

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a multidisciplinary, evidence-based perioperative care approach designed to minimize the stress response to surgery, preserve organ function, and improve clinical outcomes. A substantial body of evidence has demonstrated that implementing ERAS protocols in elective procedures not only accelerates patient recovery but also reduces healthcare costs. Surgery, one of the most commonly performed medical interventions worldwide particularly major procedures such as abdominal and colorectal surgery carries a high risk of postoperative complications. These complications contribute to increased morbidity, mortality, and economic burden for both patients and healthcare systems. This situation presents a particular challenge in the era of universal health coverage, which demands efficiency in terms of time, cost, and resource utilization. ERAS implementation has been proven to enhance postoperative recovery, shorten hospital stays, and expedite the return of normal physiological function compared to conventional surgical care, especially in lower abdominal surgeries and colorectal resections. A literature review was conducted by searching relevant articles through Google Scholar using inclusion criteria such as publications from 2018 onwards, focused on ERAS in abdominal surgery, full-text availability, and academic journal sources. The data were analyzed using a matrix table comparing research methods, study populations, research locations, and reported outcomes. ERAS protocols have shown to be effective in abdominal surgical procedures for improving patient recovery and reducing postoperative complications.

Abstract

Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among women, particularly in developing countries such as Indonesia. This disease is largely preventable through early detection efforts; however, low levels of knowledge and awareness among women of reproductive age often hinder them from undergoing routine screening. Limited information leads to most new cases being diagnosed at advanced stages, thereby lowering treatment success rates and increasing the public health burden. This study aimed to analyze the differences in knowledge among mothers at Yayasan Harapan Anak Indonesia, North Jakarta, regarding early detection of cervical cancer before and after receiving health education using leaflets. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample consisted of 40 reproductive-age women selected using total sampling. A structured questionnaire was used as the research instrument, covering questions about the definition, risk factors, symptoms, and early detection methods of cervical cancer. The intervention was carried out through a lecture accompanied by leaflet distribution, which provided concise, clear, attractive, and easy-to-understand information. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests to evaluate differences in mean scores before and after the intervention. The results showed an increase in the mean knowledge score from 57.69 in the pretest to 88.08 in the posttest. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference (p<0.05) between pre- and post-intervention. The study concludes that health education using leaflets is effective in improving mothers’ knowledge about cervical cancer early detection. Health workers are recommended to expand educational coverage using simple printed media as a sustainable strategy for prevention, to enhance community awareness more broadly, and ultimately to reduce cervical cancer incidence.

Abstract

Welding work on ships carries high risks of health disturbances due to exposure to heat, smoke, chemicals, and poor ergonomic work positions. This study aims to identify potential occupational health hazards among welders working on the MV KAREEM ship at PT. Samudra Marine Indonesia in 2025. The study uses a descriptive observational design with total sampling technique, involving 30 welders. Data were collected through direct observation using observation sheets and documentation in accordance with the welding SOP. The results of the study revealed five categories of health hazards. Physical hazards included excessive heat, noise, and poor lighting. Chemical hazards included welding fumes, metal dust, and toxic gases. Biological hazards arose from exposure to microorganisms in the work environment. Ergonomic hazards were related to awkward posture, prolonged static positions, and manual handling loads. Psychosocial hazards included long working hours, high workload, and conflicts among workers. The findings emphasize that welders are prone to health disturbances due to various risk factors. Preventive measures, including improving the work environment, implementing stricter safety standards, and providing occupational health education, are essential to reduce these risks.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the correlation between loneliness and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) among working mothers experiencing long-distance marriage (LDM) in West Sumatra, a population facing dual challenges of work responsibilities and limited spousal support. Loneliness, often triggered by the lack of emotional closeness and reduced social support, is hypothesized to significantly contribute to FoMO, particularly in the context of increased social media use. The research employed a quantitative correlational design with a sample of 385 working mothers selected through simple random sampling. Data collection utilized the FoMO scale developed by Kurniawan and Utami (2022) and a loneliness scale designed by the researcher based on Russell’s (1996) dimensions. Data analysis used the Pearson product moment correlation test after ensuring normality and linearity assumptions were met. The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between loneliness and FoMO (r = 0.649, p < 0.05). This indicates that higher levels of loneliness are associated with greater FoMO tendencies among working mothers living apart from their spouses. The study highlights how psychological vulnerabilities related to marital separation and dual roles increase susceptibility to FoMO. These results underscore the importance of providing psychosocial support, strengthening marital communication, and promoting digital literacy to reduce FoMO risks. This research contributes to understanding the psychosocial dynamics of working mothers in LDM contexts and can serve as a basis for preventive interventions to enhance mental well-being.

Abstract

Tonic is a preparation thats can stqrengsthen the body and improve stamina. Curcuma zedoaria and Curcuma aeruginosa are known to have phytochemical compunds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannin, triterpenoids, curcuminoid and polyphenols that can function as stimulant and tonics. This studiy aimed to investigate tonic effects of ethanolic extracts of Curcuma zedoaria, ethanolic extract of Curcuma aeruginosa, and their combinations on male white mice (Mus musculus). Curcuma zedoaria rhizome and Curcuma aeruginosa rhizome were extracted using the maceration method for 3 days using 70% ethanol solvent which was then thickened in a waterbath. A total of 35 male mice were divided into 7 groups with different treatments, including negative control (aquadest), positive control (caffeine 100 mg/kgBB), ethanolic exctract of Curcuma zedoaria (600 mg/kgBB), ethanolic extract of Curcuma aeruginosa (600 mg/kgBB), and combination ethanolic extract of Curcuma zedoaria and Curcuma aeruginosa at dosage of 150:450 mg/kgBB, 300:300 mg/kgBB, and 450:150 mg/kgBB. Tonic effect were evaluated using natatory exhaustion and rotarod tests. The natatory exhaustion test is carried out by observing how long the mice swim, while the rotarod test is carried out by observing how long the mice stay on the rotarod apparatus. The data analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey’s test. The results of One Way Anova showed a there were significansts differensce in each groups (p<0,05) with combination of Curcuma zedoaria : Curcuma aeruginosa (150:450 mg/kgBB) yielding the best tonic effect. From the result of Tukey’s followsup test, it showed that the highers the dosae of Curcuma aeruginosa rhizome extracts the better the tonics effects giiven. This suggest that Curcuma aeruginosa has a dominant role in enhancing phsycal endurance in male white mice.
