Abstract

This study seeks to elucidate the symbolic meanings and interpretations associated with the henna house dance performed within the village of Tasik Serai. The research methodology employed in this study adheres to a qualitative approach, specifically employing descriptive analysis. The henna house dance typically involves an odd number of dancers. The dance incorporates the symbolic attributes of shawls and bale-bales adorned with flowers and eight candles, which are arranged in a circular pattern around the bale-bale. Notably, a single candle is positioned above the top of the bale-bale. The research methodology employed in this study adheres to a qualitative approach, specifically employing descriptive analysis. The findings of this study reveal that the candles burning within the bale-bales serve as a symbolic representation of fire, embodying the inherent nature of fire as a consuming element. This symbolism is further interpreted as a protective measure, safeguarding the bride and groom from potential dangers.

Abstract

The Andun dance is a traditional art form, cultural heritage, and religious practice of the people of South Bengkulu. It is an integral part of their social fabric, embodying Islam and preserving their unique customs. Despite its modernization, the Andun dance remains an essential component of marriage ceremonies, which are traditionally held over seven days and seven nights. While some may perceive these lengthy processes as excessive and time-consuming, they are deeply ingrained in the community’s traditions. Despite its significance, the Andun dance has faced challenges in maintaining its relevance and popularity among younger generations. This research aims to address this issue by exploring the preservation efforts being made by the government, community, and artists. The government organizes festivals, performances, and educational programs to promote the Andun dance, while schools incorporate it into their extracurricular activities. Community members actively participate in deliberations to ensure that the dance is accessible to the middle and lower socioeconomic classes. Artists provide coaching and training to their students, fostering the development of the Andun dance.

Abstract

Tabuik, a traditional event in Pariaman, has become an emblematic symbol of West Sumatera’s regional identity. However, its contemporary implementation has shifted its focus from a cultural celebration to a promotional tool aimed at bolstering the local economy. Drawing upon Anthony Giddens’ agency structuration theory, this research elucidates the mutually reinforcing dynamic between agents and structures. The agents in this context encompass the government and traditional groups, whose interactions shape the structure and practices of Tabuik. The research employs Miles and Huberman’s data analysis techniques, encompassing data collection, reduction, presentation, and verification. The findings reveal a transformation in the sacred values associated with Tabuik. This shift was catalyzed by the government’s efforts to suppress Shi’ite influences perceived as detrimental to societal stability and its interpretation of Tabuik as a Shi’ah teaching. Subsequently, Tabuik gained recognition as a tourist attraction, contributing to the community’s economic development by drawing both domestic and foreign visitors. The enduring significance of Tabuik as a local wisdom in Minangkabau, coupled with its status as an icon and global recognition, has had a profound impact on various communities. It has become a draw for tourists, both domestic and international, contributing to the region’s economic growth. The research concludes that Tabuik, a tradition that has endured for decades, has adapted to contemporary developments, particularly in the context of the 5.0 era.

Abstract

Social studies education is a subject that can foster student character development and enhance learning outcomes. Social studies education provides students with knowledge and skills in various aspects of social life, including history, geography, economics, and politics. However, in reality, social studies education is still often dominated by lecture and memorization methods, which are less effective in developing students’ character and creativity. Lecture and memorization methods make students passive and less engaged in the learning process. Furthermore, this method does not encourage students to think critically and creatively. The impact of the pandemic on student character has resulted in an increasing level of ignorance and indifference towards others, particularly due to the intensive use of technology, especially cellphones. A creative social studies learning model is a learning model that employs various learning methods and strategies to encourage students to be active, think critically, and creatively. Therefore, a creative project-based social studies learning model is necessary to enhance student character and learning outcomes. Interviews and questionnaires. This millennial Amil project is a collaborative effort involving various parties, including parents and the community that will be the beneficiaries of the activity project. The support of these parties is crucial for the success of this program, particularly the support of the jamiyyah as a representative of parents or guardians of students. In this activity, students will gain valuable insights into Islamic religious education, social studies, civics, English, Indonesian, and ICT. The project aims to cultivate students’ character traits such as caring for others, empathy, and fostering a sense of gratitude. Additionally, it encourages lifelong learning for students.

Abstract

The Earth Charity Tradition is a form of local cultural tradition that continues to be preserved in the lives of agricultural communities in Indonesia, particularly in Sambikerep Village, Surabaya. However, in the context of globalization, many local traditions are facing significant challenges. This ethnographic study is crucial in delving deeper into the transformations that have occurred in the significance and value of Sedekah Bumi within Sambikerep Village, Surabaya. The primary objective of this research is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how local communities navigate the balance between tradition and modernity, while simultaneously preserving their cultural identity in the face of globalization. This research employs qualitative research methods, including participant observation, interviews, and documentation, to gather data. The qualitative data analysis involves data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The theoretical frameworks employed in this research are social construction theory and hybridity theory. The findings of this research demonstrate that the advent of globalization and its associated modernization values have transformed Sedekah Bumi from a purely spiritual event into an entertainment experience that incorporates social activities requiring participation and cooperation from all village residents. This transformation involves the integration of traditional elements with modern aspects, resulting in a vibrant cultural performance that does not compromise the original cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Ritual Tradition of Rejecting Evil, which carries sacred art values within the Kuantan Singingi community in Riau Province. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with an analytical approach and literature review. The art criticism theory used refers to four key aspects: description, formal analysis, interpretation, and evaluation. Feldman’s art criticism theory is chosen for its ability to provide a deeper and more objective analysis of the subject matter, particularly the krumpyung music. Data collection was carried out through observations, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and community members regarding the ritual, and written documentation. Data reliability was ensured through source triangulation, and data analysis followed a four-stage process: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The findings reveal that the Ritual Tradition of Rejecting Evil in the Kuantan Singingi community is rooted in animistic and dynamistic beliefs, practices that predate the arrival of Islam. Living in close connection with nature, and with limited technological resources, the community has long sought to maintain a harmonious relationship with their environment, which they believe is inhabited or controlled by spiritual beings. The sacred art values embedded in the ritual remain alive, with the Petalangan community continuing to perform the ritual annually. Despite exposure to various other cultures, this tradition endures due to several factors: the inheritance of tradition, its role in disaster protection, and its ability to foster social solidarity within the community. In conclusion, the Ritual of Rejecting Evil is not just a cultural tradition but a living expression of spiritual values that continue to shape the community's identity. This study hopes to serve as a reference for further research into similar traditions and sacred art values in other indigenous communities.

Abstract

Every society inherits traditions from its predecessors, creating a cultural continuum that defines social identity. In Indonesia, one of the unique cultural traditions is the Barge Burning Ritual, known as "Go Ge Cap Lak," which is deeply rooted in the Chinese ethnic community of Bagansiapiapi, Riau. This annual ritual, celebrated on the 16th day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, serves as a tribute to ancestors who migrated to Bagansiapiapi in search of a better life. The ritual involves burning a replica of a barge to symbolize their commitment to settling in the new land, as well as to honor the sea gods Ki Hu Ong Ya and Tai Sun.This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using Feldman’s theory of art criticism, encompassing description, formal analysis, interpretation, and evaluation. Data collection methods include observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and the Mak Teduh community, and documentation review. The study applies source triangulation for data reliability and follows a systematic process of data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The findings reveal that the Barge Burning Ritual holds significant historical, religious, and cultural meanings. It reflects the Chinese community’s struggle, resilience, and devotion to their deities. The ritual is also believed to influence economic prosperity, as the direction in which the barge falls after burning is interpreted as a sign of fortune—whether from the land or the sea. Additionally, the ritual fosters communal solidarity and preserves ancestral heritage. However, differing religious perspectives within the broader community influence participation and perception of the event. In conclusion, the Barge Burning Ritual is a profound manifestation of cultural identity, spiritual belief, and historical commemoration. It serves as both a means of worship and a cultural spectacle that strengthens ethnic cohesion while contributing to the region’s cultural tourism. Future research could explore its socio-economic impact and its role in intercultural dialogue.
