Abstract

Islamic universities have been accused of being the milieu of the growing movement of radicalism along with the new facts about the involvement of two state Islamic universities among 10 state universities involved in radicalism. The campus management has responded to the movement by developing a religious curriculum and interreligious-based learning to improve religious literacy competence. This paper aims to evaluative the practice of religious curriculum and literacy as a strategy in improving counterradicalism in campus. The interviews, observations, and data analysis resulted in the finding that the religious curriculum development with open minded principles, religious universality, local wisdom, and humanism values in the learning activities in either classroom and or places of worship of other religions can foster good counterradicalism and interfaith literacy and eliminate the evolution of radical attitudes among students. This paper suggested that the learning of religious education in campuses and schools include observation to the areas of interreligious activities and religious literacy studies to improve students' understanding of religious values among religious communities, so tolerance and counterradicalism can be fostered.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal the discriminatory experiences encountered by Shia youths in educational institutions and their strategies for constructing their identities, both in Islamic religious education classes and in the public spaces of educational institutions. This article is the result of a qualitative-descriptive study of five Shia youths in Jember who were recruited using the chain-referral sampling method. Data collected by life-story interviews were analyzed using interactive model (Miles, et al). This article finds that Shia youths encounter discriminatory experiences because they are required by Islamic Religious Education teachers to recite prayers such as qunut, even though they claim to be members of Muhammadiyah. The two Shia youths who imitated members of Muhammadiyah intended to avoid the practice of Nahdlatul Ulama-style prayers preferred by their Islamic Religious Education teachers. In addition, Shia youth generally do not dare to reveal their identity as adherents of Shia. A Shia youth claims to be a traditional Muslim or follower of Islam to avoid discrimination from his friends. It was also dicovered that Shia youths pretend to perform prayers according to the Sunni schools while secretly performing Shia prayers to fight for their right to worship. Mimicry performed by minority Shia youths confirms Homi K. Bhabha's image of mimicry because Shia youths use the Sunni Muslim's identity space. However, they secretly try to maintain their primordial identity as Shias so that minority Shia youths use an identity that is almost the same as that of Sunni Muslim, “but not completely the same”.

By using three different procedures and data sources, the veracity of the data is tested. The study's findings demonstrate that: First, early childhood care can be provided using either an authoritative parenting style, which limits children's independence while granting them authority, or a permissive parenting style, which pampers them. Second, using technology as media is one way that parents today are instilling Islamic education values which includes aspects of aqidah, worship (ibadah), and morals (akhlak) in their children. Third, gadgets have a negative impact on early childhood including cyberbullying, pornography, blasphemy and speaking impolitely in cyberspace, then children think instantly, are less active, addicted to gadgets and result in a consumptive lifestyle.
