Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to explain the factors of the emergence of “pesantren sains/science pesantren” (Trensains) and their implications for the shift in the orientation of Islamic education in Indonesia. Existing pesantren studies have looked more at practical aspects, such as curriculum development and learning, but not yet at philosophical aspects, which have implications for a shift in the orientation of Islamic education. Design/methods/approach – Data was collected using interviews and documentation. The research, which utilized a phenomenological approach, was conducted at Sragen Muhammadiyah Trensains Senior High School in Central Java and Tebuireng Trensains Senior High School in East Java. The primary respondent was Agus Purwanto, the initiator, founder, and developer of a science boarding school, who had first-hand experience with the events that took place while he was a student at the Pesantren. Findings – The findings of this study suggest that Trensains is a new pesantren genre that was developed as a reaction to the lack of science and technology in the Islamic world due to the heavy jurisprudential emphasis on Islamic education. In the history of the curricula at pesantren, including philosophy as a topic is a novelty. Research implications/limitations – The emergence of Trensains has implications for a shift in the orientation of pesantren in Indonesia from a Sufistic-fiqh orientation to a scientific-philosophical orientation which is marked by the following changes: (1) in the function of transmission and transfer of Islamic knowledge (tafaqquh fī al-dīn) to the study of Islamic sciences general science; (2) from maintaining the Islamic tradition to cultivating the scientific tradition; and (3) from a reproduction of religionists to producers of scientists. However, some drawbacks need to be acknowledged. This study has not discussed Trensains as a whole, and its effectiveness in shaping the character of pesantren is unknown. Therefore, further research is needed to understand the impact and role of Trensains in the development of Islamic education in Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose – This qualitative study investigates the pivotal role of parents in the internalization of Islamic moderation values in child development, as well as the determinants of parental behavior, knowledge, and practices. Additionally, the research identifies implications for further studies and practical applications. Design/methodology/approach – The phenomenological methodology is employed to comprehend and describe these phenomena, delving into the essence of parents' experiences. Findings – The results demonstrate that parents are responsible for shaping children's behavior and instilling Islamic moderation values. Factors such as parental experience and education, profound understanding, quality aspects, and parenting methods by exemplary parents serve as determinants of parental behavior, knowledge, and practices in incorporating Islamic moderation values in child development. Overall, the findings suggest that among all modifiable factors influencing a child's development, the quality of care children receive is of utmost importance, warranting further academic investigation. Research implications/limitations – The study emphasizes the role of parents in the internalization of Islamic moderation values; however, it does not examine the long-term effects of such internalization on children's overall development and well-being. Practical implications – This research offers valuable insights for practitioners, highlighting that parenting, when carried out effectively, can be a highly fulfilling role, bringing immense joy, pride, and happiness to a parent's life.

Abstract

Purpose – This study explores the comprehension of students from Muhammadiyah higher education institutions concerning Indonesia's multiculturalism and its distinct ethnic, religious, racial, and intergroup diversities, termed SARA, esteemed as national assets. Design/methods/approach – Utilizing a qualitative approach, data was assimilated from a literature review, focused group discussions (FGD) of [specific number, if available], comprehensive observations at Ahmad Dahlan University in Yogyakarta, in-depth interviews with purposively selected informants, and examination of pertinent documents. Findings – Preliminary findings suggest an underdeveloped understanding of multiculturalism among the students, frequently leading to misconceptions. Rather than being viewed as an inclusive concept, multiculturalism is often perceived as threatening to certain religious adherents. Specifically, minority sects like Shia and Ahmadiyya are perceived with apprehension. This knowledge gap can be attributed to limited discourse by UAD lecturers, predominantly homogeneous student interactions, and a lack of engagement with multicultural literature. Research implications – The observations from this research underscore the need to enhance SARA-oriented educational strategies at higher learning institutions. Implementing comprehensive multicultural education can pave the way for mutual respect and appreciation of SARA diversity, especially within Muhammadiyah Higher Education Institutions (PTM). Notably, the research's scope is restricted to Ahmad Dahlan University, Yogyakarta, which might not necessarily represent other Muhammadiyah academic environments.

Abstract

Purpose – This research aims to explore a deep understanding of the internalization of the five principles of the Pesantren among all stakeholders, especially the students. Another goal is to explore the essence and implementation of the Panca Jiwa Pondok of the Pesantren that have been initiated by the founders of Pondok Pesantren Gontor in Ponorogo, East Java, and how Gontor alums and non-alumni boarding schools adopt this. Design/methods/approach – This research uses a qualitative method with an ethnomethodological approach. This method focuses on the resources, procedures, and practices that group or community members use to produce and recognize social realities that can be sensed. The research was conducted at Al Kamal Islamic Boarding School in Tambaksari Kuwarasan, Kebumen, Indonesia. Data was collected through natural interviews in daily life involving researchers in the pesantren environment. The data analysis process was conducted descriptively since the first data collection, so it did not wait for excessive data accumulation. Findings – This research reveals three main characteristics of the Panca Jiwa Pondok: strengthening of social piety, strengthening of intrapersonal aspects, and spirituality. The internalization process of "Panca Jiwa Pondok" to the students through stages: introduction, thinking, imitation, and internalization, as well as interpretation. Research implications – The findings of this study have important implications for educational institutions, both general and Islamic-based, regarding the implementation and strengthening of the five principles of the Pesantren in teaching and learning activities. This is expected to help students or students understand the essence of learning so that they can grow into individuals with strong character as learners.

Abstract

Purpose – This study used bibliometric techniques to evaluate pesantren's academic output. It aimed to decipher trends in pesantren study themes, collaborative authorship networks, the most prolific contributors, frequently cited papers, and prominent affiliations publishing pesantren-centric works from 1994 to 2022. Design/methods/approach – Utilizing Scopus as the primary data source with the keyword "pesantren," this study employed a five-stage investigative approach incorporating tools such as Mendeley Desktop, Publish or Perish, and VOSviewer. After rigorous data screening and revision, 154 documents were identified with 'pesantren' as the central theme in their title. Findings – Pesantren research's trajectory is discernible in three distinct phases: 1994–2008 represents the initiation phase, 2009–2017 marks the development phase, and 2018–2022 signifies the expansion phase. This research broadly classifies the themes into micro and macro topics. The micro dimension delves into the internal dynamics of pesantren, encompassing facets like the education system, prevailing values, traditions, roles of Kyai (pesantren leaders) and Santri (pesantren students), and core subject matters. Conversely, the macro dimension evaluates pesantren's responsiveness and role concerning external dynamics, including ecological shifts, democracy, digital and social media integration, technological advancements, political engagement, and challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. Research implications – The findings, derived from evaluative and relational techniques, hold significance for scholars in Islamic education. They offer insights that can guide future research efforts, allowing scholars to minimize subjectivity and causality biases in discerning the current state of pesantren studies. Institutions can also factor these findings into their strategic planning for Islamic educational research, especially those concentrating on pesantren. Notably, a limitation of this study is its exclusive reliance on the Scopus Core Collection. Future research endeavors can achieve a more comprehensive perspective by incorporating additional databases, such as WoS, ProQuest, and PubMed, for comparative analysis.
