Abstract

TEAP has been used as a part of requirement in various aspects of tertiary education, including as a part of the requirement for undertaking thesis examinations both for English and non-English study program students. However, there appears few studies investigating the students’ perceptions toward TEAP as a requirement for thesis examination. This study qualitative case study aims to know non-English students’ perception toward TEAP as one of the requirements for thesis examination as well as to know the challenges and difficulties they experience in taking TEAP. The study involves 11 non-English students of IKIP PGRI Pontianak who were selected using purposive sampling. The data were gathered through interviews and documents. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The research finding shows that TEAP is perceived to be an assessment for learning and a hinder to finish the study timely. The findings also show that, as a requirement for thesis examination was perceived to be useful for assessing students’ English academic proficiency and motivating them to improve their English academic skills. The research findings also show that the challenges and difficulties experienced by the students are lack of understanding TEAP system, lack of training, and hard to achieve the minimum TEAP score. This research highlights the usefulness of TEAP for non-English language students, the importance of considering and anticipating the challenges, and difficulties of taking TEAP, and the importance of preparing and offering sufficient training of TEAP and English courses.

Abstract

This study investigates whether implementing the PQRST technique can improve students' reading abilities at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pontianak. Through careful observation and measurement, it was noted that students' comprehension showed a substantial improvement. Specifically, their average score rose significantly from 25.6 to 89.7. This outcome strongly suggests that employing the PQRST technique is highly effective in enhancing students' reading comprehension levels. These findings underscore the technique's practical value in educational settings, emphasizing its potential to positively impact student learning outcomes and academic performance in reading comprehension at the junior high school level.Keyword: PQRST Technique, Reading Ability, Classroom Action Research

Abstract

True and false is the implementation of game that can be played in groups or individually which is students answer questions by answering True or False. This research aimed to determine the implementation of true and false game in English Village of Parit Baru and the effects of implementation true and false game in studi independen at English Village of Parit Baru. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The researcher used a interviews, questionnaire, observation and document as tools of data collection. The subject of this research was student at English Village of Parit Baru. The researcher used data reduction, data display and draw a conclusion to analyze the data. The results of this research showed that the implementation true and false game was successfully regarded. Although it has only been applied a few times and we don’t know the result of students learning outcomes accurately but we know that students are have fun, enjoy learning and increase students enthusiasm. This research has the potential to be further developed as a classroom action research.

Abstract

In the research titled "Students Perception Of English Club In Enhancing Communicative Skills At Sman 1 Mempawah Hilir In The Academic Year 2022/2023," the aim of this study is to determine the benefits of joining the English club and students' perceptions of the English club in improving their communication skills. In this research, the researcher employed two instruments to collect data: field notes and interviews. The study was conducted at SMAN 1 Mempawah Hilir and involved the extracurricular English club instructor, Yuli Nuranawati, S.Pd. The researcher collaborated with the extracurricular instructor in data collection, seeking assistance in observing English club students to avoid bias. Meanwhile, the interviews were conducted by the researcher. Six English club students were selected as interviewees. Based on the results of observations and interviews conducted by the researcher in collaboration with the extracurricular instructor, it was found that the English club had a positive impact on their communication skills. The researcher also discovered how the English club enhanced their communication abilities.

Abstract

Abstract  The purpose of this study is to find out how project based learning can help students improve their speaking skills. Classroom Action Research (CAR) was used to conduct this study. Students of SMPN 9 Jangkang who are in grade eight-b are the subjects of this study. This study used observation sheets and speaking tests to collect data. The data shows that project based learning improves students' speaking skills by helping them build sentences, speak fluently, share ideas confidently, and stay motivated while learning. In addition, it improves overall speaking ability by making lessons easier to understand. Keywords: project based learning, speaking skills, classroom action research.

Abstract

The Effectiveness of Storytelling Technique in Public Speaking Subject of Second Semester Students (A Pre-Experimental research at the English Education Study Program Students of IKIP PGRI Pontianak). Supervised by Dr. Diah Astriyanti, M.Pd  and Maliqul Hafis, M.Pd. Language and Art University of Teacher Training and Education Institute of the Republic of Indonesia Teachers Association Universitas PGRI Pontianak 2024. This study aims to determine how well students in the second semester of public speaking employ the storytelling strategy University PGRI Pontianak. This study used pre-experimental research, in collecting the data, the researcher used the pre-test and post-test for tools of data collection with the use of test instructions of speaking. Second semester students majoring in English were population of this research with a total of 93 consisting of A Morning 26 students, B Morning 36 students, and A Afternoon 31 students. This research use cluster random sampling. A regional sampling method called cluster random sampling is used to choose samples when the subject of the study or the data source is relatively large. The researcher inspect the homogeneity sample with the same criteria and conducts the same batch, and same study program. The results of this research indicate that the storytelling method is effective and important for public speaking students. Students obtained an average score of 48.97 before the test and increased to 85.32 after using the storytelling method. Based on the table, the sig value. two tails is 0.01 and the sig value. two tails less than 0.05, which indicates that there is a significant difference between learning outcomes before and after the test. Therefore, it can be concluded that learning using the storytelling method is effective in increasing students' speaking ability scores. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted: the grades of second semester students at IKIP PGRI Pontianak change after using the storytelling method.

Abstract

This study investigates in depth the strategies used by senior high school students in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context to reduce speaking anxiety. Speaking anxiety is a common problem faced by many students, and this study aims to identify the main causes of such anxiety as well as effective strategies applied by students in the classroom. Through semi-structured interviews with a number of students, this study uncovered several key themes, including fear of communicating, fear of negative evaluation from teachers and peers, and various strategies used to overcome anxiety, such as thorough preparation before speaking, relaxation techniques to calm down, and social support from classmates. The findings from this study are expected to provide practical recommendations for educators, so that they can create a more supportive and inclusive learning environment, which in turn can help reduce students' speaking anxiety and increase their confidence in communicating in English. Abstract

The use of digital platforms in education has transformed a traditional learning to a more digital learning. Thus, teachers need to use and integrate technology into their teaching practice. This classroom action research was conducted to find out what happened to the classroom conditions when Quizizz was implemented in the classroom, and in what ways Quizizz could help improve students vocabulary mastery. The research was conducted in a junior high school Pontianak involving 35 students as the research participants. Data were collected through observation, field notes, and vocabulary tests. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while the qualitative data were analyzed by using three steps, data reduction, data display, and conclusion.   The research findings showed that Quizizz resulted in an improvement in students' vocabulary mastery and created more interesting and enthusiastic classroom conditions in the learning process. The findings showed that Quizizz could improve students vocabulary mastery and increased their motivation and enthusiasm to learn vocabulary through Quizizz. The findings reveal the importance of utilizing digital platforms such as Quizizz to support vocabulary mastery and suggest further investigation of its implementation in other aspects of language learning.   Keywords: Vocabulary Mastery, Quizizz, Classroom Action Research

Abstract

Grammatical errors in writing narrative texts in English are quite diverse and often occur in new or experienced writers. The purpose of this study was to analyze grammatical errors in writing narrative texts and find the main causes of eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Siantan often making grammatical errors when writing narrative texts. Many students often experience grammatical errors in their writing that can interfere with students' ability to write effectively. This study analyzed error data from narrative texts made by 28 students using a qualitative descriptive approach with a method of analyzing student assignments in writing narrative texts to collect data to see the location of grammatical errors that are often made when writing, then a number of students were interviewed to investigate the causes of the errors. the results of this study indicate that students when writing narrative texts make many errors in omission and the cause is because students often write narrative texts in English always write in the first language that is translated into English, this is what causes differences in the grammar of the translation and causes students to make grammatical errors in writing narrative texts. Abstract

This research aimed to find out how wordwall website can improve students' mastery of the simple present tense in the tenth grade of SMK Islam Insan Cendekia Mempawah. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) with two cycles, each consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting phases. The research subjects were 10 students from Software Engineering class. Data were collected through observation, field notes, and tests, and analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The findings revealed that the use of the Wordwall website significantly enhanced students' understanding and application of the simple present tense. Students' mean scores improved from 62.9 in Cycle 1 to 82.5 in Cycle 2. Additionally, the interactive activities provided by Wordwall, such as Unjumble, Complete the Sentences, and Gameshow Quiz, increased students' engagement and participation in the learning process. The classroom atmosphere also became more conducive to active learning, with reduced distractions and greater student focus. The research concluded that the Wordwall website is improving students' mastery of the simple present tense. It is recommended for educators to incorporate Wordwall website into their teaching strategies to enhance student motivation and learning outcomes.
