Abstract

This research is motivated by concerns and also the number of natural disasters in Indonesia, including the North Sumatra region which is prone to various types of disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions. Community preparedness plays an important role in efforts to mitigate disaster risk and reduce its impact. This study aims to analyze the level of community preparedness in dealing with natural disasters in several vulnerable areas in North Sumatra and the factors that affect them. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection through interviews, observations, and documentation, with analysis using the theory of B Miles and Huberman. The results show that the level of community preparedness is in the category of "quite prepared", but there are still weaknesses in terms of technical knowledge about emergency response, the use of evacuation routes, and the lack of regular training from relevant institutions. Factors such as education, previous experience of disasters, and access to information have been proven to have a significant effect on community preparedness. Therefore, efforts to improve structured and community-based disaster education are needed to build community resilience to disasters in a sustainable manner. The implication is to provide information that the community is ready for disasters, but some are not, therefore the government has a role to always be ready so that the community is able to overcome natural disaster problems, especially in disaster-prone areas.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of holistic fitness—an integrated approach that includes physical, mental, and social readiness—in facing the selection and training process for civil service positions, particularly for prospective members of the TNI and Polri. The aim of this research is to examine efforts to optimize holistic fitness among the people of Medan as a strategy to enhance selection success rates and the effectiveness of official training programs. A descriptive qualitative method was used, with data collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires distributed to prospective selection participants and physical and mental trainers. The findings show that physical readiness must be supported by mental resilience and social skills in order for participants to navigate each stage of the selection process effectively. Among the Medan community, levels of physical and mental readiness were reported as ready and very ready at 85%, while social readiness reached 90%. However, challenges remain, particularly the low awareness among some community members regarding the importance of comprehensive preparation as a prerequisite for success in the selection process. Therefore, a systematic and continuous holistic fitness development program is needed, involving educational institutions, community leaders, and relevant agencies. The conclusion of this study is that optimizing holistic fitness is a strategic step in preparing the Medan community to face the selection and training process for civil service roles more effectively.

Abstract

This study evaluates the implementation of the street vendor (PKL) regulation policy in Padang City based on Regional Regulation No. 11 of 2005. The main focus is to assess the effectiveness of the policy and identify the factors that influence it. A descriptive qualitative approach was used, with data collected through interviews and field document analysis. The results indicate that the policy implementation has not been fully effective. Communication between related agencies and street vendors is still conducted informally and lacks comprehensive outreach, resulting in inconsistent and unclear information dissemination. The resources used for enforcement, particularly from the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP), are highly dependent on requests from the Department of Trade, leading to irregular implementation. The disposition or attitude of the enforcement personnel also affects policy outcomes in the field. Furthermore, the bureaucratic structure, which involves multiple agencies, creates coordination complexity that impacts the effectiveness of the enforcement. The conclusion of this study is that improvements are needed in communication, inter-agency coordination, and the implementation structure to ensure that the regulation of street vendors in Padang City becomes more effective and sustainable.

Abstract

This study is motivated by differences in the texture of sugar used in cake processing, particularly pandan sponge cake, where granulated sugar commonly used has a coarse texture and its impact on product quality has not been widely studied. The objective of the study is to analyze the effect of using granulated sugar versus powdered sugar on the quality of pandan sponge cake, covering aspects such as shape, volume, color, aroma, texture, and taste. This research is a true experimental study with three replications for each treatment. Data were collected through organoleptic tests using sensory evaluation methods by panelists to assess the cake quality based on predetermined indicators. Data analysis was conducted using the Independent Sample t-Test to determine significant differences between the two types of sugar. The results show that the use of powdered sugar significantly improves the volume, color, texture, and taste of pandan sponge cake compared to granulated sugar. These findings indicate that the choice of sugar type plays a crucial role in producing pandan sponge cake with superior sensory quality.

Abstract

Ramadhan is a significant moment for Muslims to enhance religious practices, including tadarus (recitation) of the Qur’an. Masjid Darul Rahman Palangka Raya organized a tadarus mentoring program for young congregants as an effort to instill love for the Qur’an from an early age. The aim of this initiative is to improve children’s Qur’anic reading skills and instill spiritual values during the month of Ramadhan. The method used is service learning, implemented through three stages: pre-implementation (needs assessment and goal formulation), implementation (mentoring sessions), and post-implementation (evaluation and reflection). The results show an improvement in participants’ Qur’an reading ability and high enthusiasm among children in participating in the program. Additionally, a religious, enjoyable, and character-building learning environment was established. This program has the potential to serve as a model for mosque-based early childhood religious education that can be implemented sustainably.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of village government policies in supporting the development and empowerment of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) through the Village-Owned Enterprise (Badan Usaha Milik Desa/BUMDes) Bumi Pertiwi in Laut Dendang Village, Percut Sei Tuan Subdistrict, Deli Serdang Regency. The background of this study is the high number of UMKM actors in the village and the existence of village policies aimed at strengthening the local economic sector. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis. The results indicate that the implementation of BUMDes programs in supporting UMKM has not been optimal due to several obstacles, including delays in loan repayments caused by low borrower discipline, weak recipient selection systems, limited program outreach, and inadequate managerial and administrative capacity of BUMDes managers. These obstacles have affected the effectiveness of the program and led to declining community trust in BUMDes. Nevertheless, BUMDes still holds potential as an instrument for strengthening the village economy if accompanied by continuous capacity building, improved governance, strict selection systems, and enhanced human resource capacity. These findings contribute to the strengthening of community-based local economic institutions and support sustainable village development.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the critical role of correctional institutions (Lembaga Pemasyarakatan) in fostering the rehabilitation of inmates not only from a legal perspective but also in terms of psychological well-being. The aim of this research is to describe the implementation and impact of a counseling workshop on the psychological well-being of inmates at Lapas Kelas III Rangkasbitung. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The workshop was conducted in one day at the prison hall by students of the Nonformal Education and Guidance and Counseling Program at Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, consisting of four main sessions: material delivery, completion of the DASS questionnaire, art therapy through drawing activities, and a reflective spin wheels game. The findings indicate that the workshop enhanced inmates’ understanding of mental health and reduced levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. Moreover, inmates’ active participation had a positive effect on stress management, increased future-oriented hope, and strengthened motivation for personal transformation. These results suggest that counseling workshops are an effective and relevant psychological development strategy that should be implemented sustainably within correctional facilities to support the psychological well-being of inmates.

Abstract

The buffalo livestock population in Koto VII Subdistrict, Sijunjung Regency, has experienced a decline due to reduced grazing land and various other constraints hindering its development. This study aims to examine the population structure of buffalo livestock and identify the main challenges faced in its development. A census method was used, involving all 108 buffalo farmers in the area as respondents. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed descriptively using numerical tabulation and percentages. The results show a total buffalo population of 755, with a composition of 28% male and 72% female, and an age distribution indicating strong potential for population growth. However, several major constraints were identified, including reduced availability of grazing land due to land-use conversion (64%), low interest among younger generations in livestock farming (25%), and challenges in managing livestock diseases (11%). The findings conclude that while the current population structure in Koto VII Subdistrict supports development efforts, its sustainability heavily depends on the sustainable management of grazing land and increased youth participation in the livestock sector.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the persistently low literacy levels in correctional institutions, including at Lapas Kelas III Rangkasbitung, which poses a serious challenge to the social rehabilitation process of inmates. Many lack basic reading and writing skills, limiting their access to information and education. The aim of this research is to examine the implementation of literacy education programs as an effort to improve literacy among inmates. A qualitative approach was used, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of programs conducted by university students. The findings show that the literacy program was implemented in stages, starting with the introduction of alphabet letters, construction of syllables, and progressing to reading simple sentences using relevant reading materials. The learning process was adapted to individual abilities, employing a personalized approach with direct mentoring. The program demonstrated significant progress, evidenced by improved literacy skills among inmates, increased self-confidence, and enthusiasm for learning. These findings affirm that literacy education in correctional institutions plays a strategic role in fulfilling the fundamental right to education and serves as a means of rehabilitation and empowerment, fostering positive thinking and opening opportunities for social reintegration after incarceration.

Abstract

Inmates in correctional institutions represent a segment of society requiring continuous development to prepare for post-sentence social reintegration. This study aims to examine the implementation and outcomes of self-employment skills training through culinary workshops, specifically targeting inmates at Lembaga Pemasyarakatan Kelas III Rangkasbitung. The method used is participatory with a descriptive approach. The study involved 20 inmate informants, comprising 4 women and 16 men. Data analysis techniques included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The training program focused on the preparation of kimbab as a form of practical entrepreneurship development. The results indicate that the training positively impacted the improvement of inmates’ skills, as evidenced by the quality of the kimbab products and participants’ enthusiastic responses. Beyond technical success, the training fostered increased self-confidence, motivation for independent living, and readiness among inmates to contribute productively to society after release. These findings reinforce the urgency of developing practical skill-based training programs in correctional facilities as a sustainable strategy for empowerment and social reintegration.
