Abstract

Upper limb injuries, particularly involving the arm and shoulder, are common among adolescents in high school settings. Proper first aid management, including the use of a sling (Mitella), is essential to prevent further damage, reduce pain, and support recovery. This study employed a pre–post-test design to evaluate the effectiveness of Mitella placement training among students at SMA 3 Kota Kediri. A total of 32 Grade 1 students were selected using purposive sampling. The training followed a structured Standard Operating Procedure, including theoretical explanation, demonstration, and supervised hands-on practice. Participants’ knowledge was assessed using a 7-item validated questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Mitella placement training significantly improved participants’ knowledge(p = 0.008). Most students demonstrated enhanced understanding after the training, indicating that the combination of theory, demonstration, and hands-on practice effectively strengthened their competence. Mitella placement training effectively enhances high school students’ knowledge. These findings support the implementation of practical first aid training programs in schools to improve adolescents’ preparedness and competence in managing upper limb injuries.

Abstract

Emergency and disaster situations demand rapid, accurate, and well-coordinated responses from healthcare professionals. Triage is a critical process for prioritizing patients based on severity, ensuring optimal use of limited medical resources. Nurses are often the first responders responsible for triage implementation, especially in community health centers (Puskesmas) in Indonesia. Knowledge of triage systems, particularly the Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment (START) method, is essential for achieving optimal patient outcomes. This study aimed to examine the relationship between nurses’ triage knowledge and length of service in community health centers, providing insights for targeted training and emergency preparedness strategies. A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted with 32 nurses from 19 community health centers in Cirebon, Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling. Triage knowledge was assessed using a validated 16-item questionnaire, with scores categorized into low, moderate, and high. Length of service was measured in years. Data were collected via an online session and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis with a significance level of p < 0.05. Most nurses demonstrated high triage knowledge (75%) with a mean score of 13.0 ± 2.74. Knowledge was highest in disaster definitions (93.8%) and START triage concepts (93.8%), while the most errors occurred in identifying green-labeled (68.8% incorrect) and white-labeled patients (59.4% incorrect). Pearson correlation showed a weak, non-significant positive relationship between length of service and triage knowledge (r = 0.083; p = 0.650). The findings indicate that length of service alone does not ensure higher triage knowledge, especially in community health centers with limited exposure to emergencies. Continuous professional development, scenario-based simulations, and structured training are essential to maintain and enhance nurses’ triage competence. These results can inform the development of targeted educational programs and policies to strengthen emergency preparedness in primary healthcare settings.

Abstract

Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality among the elderly. Preventive efforts focusing on increasing knowledge and awareness are essential to reduce stroke risk and improve quality of life. This study used a pre–post-test design with 62 elderly participants who regularly attended the Church Isa Al-Masih in Kediri City. The intervention consisted of stroke prevention education delivered through a standardized procedure (SOP) using leaflets and flipbooks. Knowledge was assessed with a 6-item questionnaire covering hypertension, causes of high blood pressure, normal blood pressure ranges, medication adherence, diet, and breathing relaxation techniques. Data were collected before and after the education and analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The Wilcoxon test indicated a significant increase in participants’ knowledge following the stroke prevention education (p < 0.05). Structured, interactive, and community-based education enhanced understanding of stroke risk factors, blood pressure management, medication adherence, diet, and relaxation techniques. Stroke prevention education is effective in enhancing knowledge among elderly individuals and may encourage preventive health behaviors. Community-based approaches can serve as a model for similar health promotion programs targeting older adults.

Abstract

Emergency situations and mass casualty incidents require nurses to make rapid, accurate, and evidence-based decisions, particularly in triage using the Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment (START) system. Nurses’ affective competence, including confidence, motivation, and emotional readiness, is crucial for effective triage. However, the relationship between length of service and affective competence remains underexplored in Indonesian community health centers. This cross-sectional study involved 27 nurses from 18 community health centers in Banten Province, Indonesia. A 15-item 4-point Likert questionnaire assessed affective competence in START triage, categorized into low, moderate, and high levels. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analyzed the relationship between length of service and affective competence, with significance set at p < 0.05. Respondents were nearly evenly distributed by gender (48.1% male, 51.9% female) with a mean age of 37.07 ± 7.01 years and mean work experience of 14.81 ± 7.40 years. Most nurses (70.8%) demonstrated high affective competence, 29.2% moderate, and none low. Participants reported high confidence in understanding, explaining, and applying START, although some experienced difficulty in real-life scenarios. Correlation analysis indicated no significant relationship between length of service and affective competence (r = -0.053, p = 0.793). Nurses’ affective competence appears more influenced by training and practical experience than years of service. Structured training programs are essential to enhance affective competence in START triage, regardless of professional tenure.

Abstract

The modern world faces a double burden of malnutrition, where a country experiences two nutritional problems, namely undernutrition and overnutrition. One of the common nutritional problems among adolescents is obesity. Obesity is thought to be caused by the habit of consuming sugary drinks. This study aims to identify the relationship between the habit of consuming sugary drinks and the incidence of obesity in adolescents. This research approach uses correlation analysis with a cross-sectional method. The sampling technique used total sampling, with a sample size of 94 junior high school students. The research variables were consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and the incidence of overweight. Data analysis was performed using Spearman's nonparametric statistical test. The results showed that most respondents (73.4%) were in the high consumption category. Based on the nutritional status of the respondents, only a few (22.3%) were obese. The correlation between sweetened beverage consumption and obesity had a p-value of 0.796 > 0.05, indicating no relationship between the two variables. The absence of a positive correlation between sweetened beverage consumption and obesity is likely due to various factors that influence Body Mass Index, glucostatic theory, and individual energy compensation mechanisms.

Abstract

Young age sex education is often considered a taboo topic in Indonesian society, leading to a lack of understanding among adolescents. This can result in negative behaviors and risks such as sexual violence and unplanned pregnancy. This community service activity (PKM) aimed to provide accurate information and shape positive attitudes towards reproductive health among junior high school students. This service employed an educational, participatory, and applicative approach, consisting of three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The target participants were 30 students of class IX-6 at SMP Negeri 16 Medan, selected through purposive sampling. The intervention was conducted in two structured sessions using PowerPoint presentations, leaflets, and audiovisual media, covering the importance of sex education, reproductive organ function, ethics, norms, and how to avoid sexual deviations and violence. Evaluation was carried out using a pre-test and post-test knowledge questionnaire (10 items, KR-20=0.85) and observation. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a Paired Sample T-Test. The activity successfully achieved its participant target. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge, with the average pre-test score of 5.2 (Sufficient category) rising to 8.1 (Good category) in the post-test (p-value=0.001). Observation also indicated a positive shift in participants' attitudes and understanding, as they were able to explain the importance of sex education and ways to avoid sexual violence. Counseling on sex education for young adolescents is effective in increasing knowledge and shaping positive attitudes towards reproductive health. Sustainable, school-based educational interventions are recommended as a routine part of adolescent health promotion programs.

Abstract

Adolescent mental health is a critical issue that directly impacts emotional development, behavior, and academic achievement. High school adolescents are in a transitional phase that is vulnerable to psychosocial stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma, particularly due to academic pressures, social relationships, and developmental changes. Lack of knowledge and awareness about mental health leads to delays in recognizing symptoms and seeking help. This community service activity aims to increase adolescents' knowledge and understanding of mental health concepts, the types, signs, and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma, and to equip students with simple coping strategies for dealing with psychological problems. This activity uses a health education design with a pre-survey baseline approach and counseling intervention. The target group is 18 students at an integrated Islamic high school, with characteristics of adolescent age. The variables measured include levels of anxiety, depression, and psychological trauma. The instruments used in the initial screening were the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) for anxiety, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for depression, and the PC-PTSD-5/TESI to identify trauma risk. The intervention was carried out through mental health education and the practice of simple coping strategies, such as deep breathing techniques and stress management. Pre-survey results indicated that the majority of students experienced moderate to severe mental health problems. Anxiety levels were predominantly in the moderate (55.6%) and severe (38.9%) categories, while depression was in the moderate (50%) and severe (50%) categories. The risk of psychological trauma was predominantly in the moderate (72.2%) category, followed by severe trauma (22.2%). These findings indicate high mental health vulnerability among high school adolescents and the need for systematic promotive and preventive interventions. This community service activity concluded that mental health education, accompanied by initial screening and training in simple coping strategies, is a relevant and necessary effort to increase adolescents' awareness and ability to manage mental health issues. This program is expected to become a model for sustainable promotive-preventive interventions in school settings to optimally support adolescent mental health.

Abstract

The aging process brings physical and psychological changes that can impact on the mental health of the elderly. Anxiety is often triggered by the death of a loved one, which can lead to feelings of loneliness. Elderly individuals with high levels of religiosity exhibit better attitudes, are satisfied with their lives, and experience less loneliness. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between religiosity and psychological well-being among elderly individuals at the Tanjung Elderly Community Health Post (Posyandu Lansia) in Bendo Village. The study design employed a correlational cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used purposive sampling, selecting 60 respondents from a population of 75. The research instruments used a religiosity questionnaire and the Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scale. Statistical tests used Spearman's rho with a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that the majority (76.7%) of respondents had high levels of religiosity and the majority (65%) had high levels of psychological well-being. The analysis yielded a p-value of 0.000 ≤ 0.05 and a coefficient between variables of 0.669, indicating a high correlation between religiosity and psychological well-being in the elderly at the Tanjung Elderly Posyandu in Bendo Village. The higher the elderly's religiosity, the higher their psychological well-being. The concept of surrender and emotional and psychological calm that results from a positive interaction with God impacts both physical and mental health. A well-conditioned environment with spiritual activities can support seniors in living well.

Abstract

Cancer is a non-communicable disease that is the leading cause of death in the world, including Indonesia. One of the main treatments for cancer is chemotherapy, which although effective, often causes severe side effects, one of which is fatigue. Fatigue in cancer patients not only affects the physical, but also emotional and mental. In dealing with this condition, resilience plays an important role. Resilience can help patients survive, adapt, and stay enthusiastic about undergoing treatment. This study is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach, using The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) questionnaire on the resilience variable and the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) questionnaire on the Fatigue variable. The sampling technique is non-probability sampling by consecutive sampling. The number of samples is 132 respondents in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Baladhika Husada Hospital, Jember. Data analysis uses univariate analysis with the Spearman rank. The results of the study showed that respondents who had poor resilience and severe fatigue were 15 (11.4%), moderate resilience and moderate fatigue were 41 (31.1%), and good resilience and mild fatigue were 33 (25%). The results of the Spearman rank test analysis obtained a p value of 0.000 <α (0.05) and the contingency value was equal to -0.465, meaning a moderate relationship with a negative correlation direction. There is a significant relationship between resilience and fatigue in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Baladhika Husada Hospital, Jember.
