Abstract

Many social media applications were established that increased tourists' dependability on social media for their travel decisions. However, one application led the Herd to bring the tourism industry back to its pedestal-the TikTok application. This descriptive research with a quantitative approach utilized snowball sampling with 400 TikTok users as respondents. The findings revealed that the TikTok application was a helpful platform for tourism destinations for either gaining information or affecting and helping with their travel decisions. Likewise, this application is an effective means to promote the Philippines' tourism industry and reach larger audiences. It influenced them to travel. Also, it is well known for its engaging and addictive nature because of its tailored feeds of amusing videos paired with music and sound effects. The analysis explores the reasons and social explanations for tourists' interaction with travel videos on the short-form video-sharing platform TikTok to comprehend how involvement with the TikTok application affects the tourism sector. However, the TikTok application positively impacts the tourism industry. It allows the users to be knowledgeable about tourism information, and it also showcases the tourism destination in the comfort of their homes through the screen of their mobile phones. Thus, the TikTok application is a powerful marketing tool, making it an excellent platform for attracting new tourists.

Abstract

Foreign language anxiety is a psychological factor that significantly influences the process of acquiring a foreign language. This anxiety often manifests as feelings of incompetence triggered by concerns about being monitored, judged, or compared to others. This study on the anxiety experienced by students learning German at Bali Tourism Polytechnic (BiTP) employs a qualitative approach using case study and phenomenological methods. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory classroom observations, and related documents. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis methods. The research findings indicate that students experience various types of anxiety, such as state anxiety, situation-specific anxiety, anxiety in testing situations, facilitating anxiety, and debilitating anxiety. The levels of anxiety experienced by the students were mostly low to moderate. Foreign language anxiety has negative impacts, such as decreased performance, avoidance of language-use situations, and reduced motivation. However, anxiety can also have positive effects when managed well, such as serving as motivation to study harder. To minimize anxiety, instructors can provide positive feedback, prepare adequate materials and exercises, use collaborative and supportive teaching methods, and encourage students to focus on the learning process and their personal development.

Abstract

The linguistic landscape, defined as the visibility and representation of languages in public spaces, mirrors societal multilingualism and cultural dynamics. This study delves into the intricate interplay of language and society within the tourism village landscape of Pentingsari in Yogyakarta. It employed qualitative methods, including ethnographic observation, document analysis, and interviews, to decipher the layers of meaning embedded in the linguistic landscape. Ethnographic observation involves systematic documentation of linguistic elements encountered in public spaces, including signs, advertisements, and graffiti. Document analysis further scrutinized these linguistic artefacts' textual and visual features, identifying patterns and themes within the linguistic landscape of the village. It found that the linguistic landscape of Pentingsari Tourism Village was characterized by multilingual and codeswitching phenomena, evidenced by the utilization of various languages, including Indonesian, Javanese, Arabic, and English. In addition, it also showed that the phenomena were not primarily due to its status as a tourism village, but rather, it served the needs of the local community.

Abstract

The interplay between culture and language is a central theme in anthropological linguistics. Culture encompasses values, beliefs, norms, and traditions passed down through generations, and language plays a fundamental role in expressing and preserving these cultural elements. This paper explores the reciprocal relationship between language and culture, illustrating how language not only reflects but also shapes the social and cultural realities of a community. By examining various examples, such as the use of honorifics in Japanese culture and the transmission of oral traditions in indigenous communities, the study highlights the role of language as a medium for cultural continuity. Additionally, it delves into how cultural changes, such as technological advancements, lead to the evolution of language, especially in the development of new vocabulary. Through this analysis, the paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how language and culture mutually influence each other, facilitating the ongoing process of cultural preservation and transformation.

West Sumatra holds significant potential for the development of historical tourism, with regions such as Bukittinggi, Padang, Payakumbuh, Batusangkar, Sawahlunto, Padang Panjang, Pariaman, and Bonjol showcasing a rich historical legacy from prehistoric times through the colonial era and the independence movement. This study employs a qualitative research approach combined with a descriptive method to explore the potential and marketing strategies of historical tourism in the area. The qualitative approach allows for a deep understanding of the region’s social and material realities, while the descriptive method systematically illustrates current events, conditions, and opportunities within the historical tourism sector. The research highlights the importance of local stories and narratives in enriching the visitor experience and differentiating West Sumatra as a historical tourism destination. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the critical role of collaboration between government bodies, local communities, and tourism practitioners in achieving sustainable tourism development. Integrating both visible and intangible resources, especially human capital, is crucial for crafting a compelling and resilient tourism strategy. Overall, West Sumatra’s rich historical assets present a substantial opportunity for economic growth and cultural preservation through thoughtfully developed historical tourism initiatives.

Abstract

This article discusses the complex relationship between language and philosophy, focusing on the weaknesses of language and the role of analytic philosophy in epistemology. The main problems raised include the ambiguity of language, its limitations in conveying abstract concepts, and its impact on philosophical thought. This research uses a qualitative method through content analysis and literature studies of the works of philosophers such as Wittgenstein, Russell, and Gettier, as well as a hermeneutic approach to interpreting texts contextually. It aims to examine how language affects philosophical understanding and how analytic philosophy seeks to address the weaknesses of language through logical and semantic analysis. The results show that language, although vital in communication and the construction of reality has limitations such as ambiguity and dependence on context. Analytic philosophy plays a role in clarifying meaning, analyzing concepts, and overcoming misunderstandings through an epistemological approach. This article suggests the need for further research on language in the context of digital technologies and the integration of language philosophy into the educational curriculum to enrich cross-disciplinary understanding. Implicitly, collaborations with cognitive sciences and sociology can provide new insights into the dynamics of language and thought.

Abstract

It is generally agreed that oral communication skill is given more priority in teaching ESP for tourism compared with written one, and so is it in Poltekpar Bali (Bali Tourism Polytechnic) that educates and trains students to work or become entrepreneurs in the fields of tourism. Therefore, oral assessment becomes crucial. However, conducting this using the most common technique (i.e. one-by-one interview) takes plenty of time. This study was to find out an efficient technique for assessing oral communication skill in ESP class at Poltekpar Bali. It was an empirical classroom action research that was based on a collection of experiences and observations continuously reviewed and developed by the teachers. It was found that group oral test was an efficient technique, in which a group of students of 4 to 6 was provided with a card containing a situation relevant to their vocational subjects. They had to discuss it for about 10 minutes. Through unobtrusive listening to the discussion, the teacher carried out the assessment. This article shows how to design ‘situation cards’ and provides several examples of the cards. It also describes the procedures to be followed in handling the test, including the stages before, during, and after the implementation. Furthermore, it suggests some tips when the discussion during the test is stuck or does not work.

Data from a sample of 41 respondents were collected within the research period from August to December 2019 to be used in the analysis of causal relationships. In this research model, tourism experience economy and tourist engagement are posited as second-order constructs that theoretically would affect the overall satisfaction as an antecedent of creating incentive for word of mouth (WOM). In the structural model analysis, the results found were that of tourism experience economy construct has significant effect to overall satisfaction with a coefficient value of 0.666; and overall tourist satisfaction also has significant, positive effect to the foreign tourists' incentive to share word of mouth (WOM) in Pinge Tourism Village, with path coefficient value of 0.497.
