Abstract

Tahta untuk Rakyat Throne for the People, which is the principle that the highly respected Hamengkubuwono IX lived by as a democratic and nationalist King of Kesultanan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, embodies the concept of the people, by the people, for the people. Under his rule, Kesultanan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat (Yogyakarta Sultanate in Indonesia) was committed to placing the people first. Nevertheless, the book Menanam adalah Melawan, or Planting is Resisting, challenges the very principle and questions the commitment of the present-day sultanate. The article explores the activist book, which contains the notes of an activist farmer who reflected on and wrote about his journeys and experiences as a farmer-turned-activist after the village where he farmed was claimed by the authorities, including the sultanate, and was planned to be made into a mining site. Faircloughs sociocultural linguistics frames the analysis, and more specifically through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The results indicate that at the micro level, Widodos writing uses emotive and technical language to construct a collective identity of marginalized farmers, opposing powerful entities like the sultanate and corporations. At the meso-level, the text challenges dominant power structures and neoliberal policies, advocating for social justice and a responsive monarchy, while emphasizing the need for transparency and genuine community partnership. The article indicates that the concern about the marginalized should take into account non-mainstream texts such as those produced by the marginalized so that social injustice can be minimized.

Abstract

This article explores the indigenization of English in Pakistan in Kanza Javeds English novel Ashes, Wine and Dust. This exploratory and interpretative research employed a close reading of the novel to analyse lexical borrowing in Pakistani English, utilising a note-taking technique to identify incorporated Urdu words, examining linguistic features such as semantic fields. The analysis following established frameworks that focus on lexical borrowing and variation as reflections of socio-linguistic practices. The research aimed to explore two key questions regarding lexical variation in this novel. First, the study examined how Javed incorporates various lexical borrowing in her novel. These include words related to food, living styles, clothing, forms of address and titles, religious terms, Indo-Pak history, traditional wedding events, ethnic identity, languages representing cultural identity, and places symbolizing cultural heritage. Each of these categories reflects the rich cultural and historical context of Pakistan. Second, the study analysed how these lexical variations reflect socio-linguistic practices in Pakistani English. The novel shows the use of code-switching and compounding, two prominent features of Pakistani English that highlight the engaging language use between Urdu and English, blending them to create a distinct linguistic identity. By integrating these cultural-specific words, the writer aims to enhance the authenticity of the story and connect with a broader audience. This shows how language variation reflects the socio-linguistic norms of Pakistani society.

Abstract

The ellipsis of the subject is used to make sentences more concise and effective. Subject ellipsis can occur in written and spoken languages. This research examines the ellipsis of subjects in the coordinative constructions of the Acehnese language. A qualitative approach was employed for this research, with data collected from three different locations in Pidie Regency, Aceh, Indonesia: Padang Tiji Sub-district (located in the westernmost area), Mutiara Timur Sub-district (located in the central area) and Tangse Sub-district (located in the easternmost area). The research data consists of both oral and written data obtained from informants. Data collection was conducted using the listening-engagement technique and free-engaged listening techniques. Data analysis was conducted using the distribution method with basic and advanced techniques. The research results revealed that the subject ellipsis occurred in the second clause. The ellipsis occurred if there was the same syntactic function as the ellipsis condition. If the subject was not identical, the ellipsis could not be made even if the syntactic function was similar. The ellipsis of the subject in the coordinative construction of the Acehnese language occurs in the coordinative construction of the Acehnese language expressing: 1) addition relationship, which is marked by the conjunction ngn/dan (and), lom (and/again/then), and sireuta (also), 2) contradictory relationship is expressed with the conjunctions malngkan (but), 3) oppositional relations is expressed with the conjunctions tapi (nonetheless), 4) optional relationship is marked by the conjunction of the atawa (or), and 5) supplementary relationships is marked by the conjunction of the teuma (then).

Abstract

This study utilized Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), grounded in Van Dijks framework to investigate how online news articles from American and Indonesian outlets portrayed anti-vaccine views related to COVID-19. Through systematic online searches, the research examined the data through the lenses of macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. Eight articles were selected for this study: four from American sources and four from Indonesian sources. The selected articles were published during specific periods: February 2022 to February 2023 for the U.S., and January 2021 to January 2022 for Indonesia. These articles, ranging from 500 to 1500 words, focused on Anti-Vaccine COVID-19 topics. The findings revealed distinct thematic differences. The macrostructure analysis showed that American articles highlighted distrust in specific vaccines and opposition to mandates, fostering skepticism, while Indonesian articles examined a wider range of cultural, religious, and personal factors influencing vaccine hesitancy, including anti-vaccine sentiments among expatriates and athletes. The superstructure analysis indicated that American reports emphasized controversy, whereas Indonesian reports explored motivations more deeply. Additionally, linguistic choices in the microstructure influenced portrayals, with American articles using dysphemism and active voice to emphasize danger, while Indonesian articles employed strong language to convey diverse perspectives. Despite its emphasis on textual analysis, this study offered significant insights into the sophisticated discussions of anti-vaccine sentiments in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, as reflected in American and Indonesian online news.

Abstract

This study explores the ethnomulticultural content in Osing literature, highlighting how it expresses the Osing ethnic identity through its unique characteristics and traditions. Through a qualitative-interpretative-anthropological method, this study examined data in the form of words, sentences, and paragraphs extracted from two short stories. The short stories under investigation included a short story entitled Samar Wulu (Dusk; the time when the Sun is about to set) by Andika Fitriyah and Lintrik (Love Spell) by Dyah Agustin Wulandari. In this literary anthropology research, the data in the two short stories were analyzed based on their ethnomulticultural content. The ethnomulticultural analysis explored cultural phenomena and traditions, which included worldviews and local wisdom. The researchers conducted a three-stage reading process of the short stories for the representation of Osing cultural content: receptive reading, repeated readings to gather data on ethno-multicultural elements, and interpretive reading using a literary anthropology approach to analyze the worldview and local wisdom of the Osing community. The results revealed the significant role rituals play in expressing Osing cultural identity. Rituals like Kebo-Keboan, for overcoming plagues, and Lintrik, for warding off misfortune, are deeply rooted in Osing society and reflect themes of magic and tragedy. These rituals embody the Osing worldview, where harmony between the micro and macro cosmos is essential. The presence of magical realism in these rituals affirms the local identity of the Osing people in postcolonial society. The findings suggest potential avenues for integrating cultural insights into pedagogical approaches at the junior high school level.

Abstract

Aceh is a special autonomous province of Indonesia located on the northwest tip of Sumatra Island. Aceh had been in conflict with the Indonesian government for more than 3 decades before officially declaring peace in 2005. This study aims to shed light on the sociolinguistic situation in Aceh during the conflict and following the 2005 peace accord, as well as to provide a deeper understanding of the roots of Acehs rapid language shift. Based on focus groups with young people and young parents, as well as follow-up interviews with members of an earlier generation, the study revealed that the prolonged conflict between Aceh and Indonesia failed to lead to resistance. Instead of being a colonial language, Indonesian is an integral part of national identity. Even though there was still a stated pride and high level of ideological identification with Acehnese, a gradual shift away from Acehnese began during the conflict. Since the 1970s and 1980s, an emerging phenomenon of Indonesian intergenerational transmission has emerged. This linguistic phenomenon then became more and more common among Acehnese families in the 2000s and peaked after the tsunami and peace agreement. Prestige/modernity, education, and socioeconomic factors seem to be the primary drivers of the Acehnese-to-Indonesian language shift.

Abstract

The study described teachers speech performance using textual and non-textual elements in language teaching-learning. The linguistic element is the text of the language landscape of Toba Caldera Geosites. This research was conducted from the philosophical perspective of empiricism that is relevant to the phenomenological paradigm, with the type of interpretative and constructive phenomenology underlying the qualitative design. The qualitative design model applied in this research was phenomenology, aiming to understand and describe individuals subjective experiences and perspectives. The data were collected through in-depth interviews, focused group discussions, and direct participatory observation. The procedure covered (1) establishing the objectives of the study and bracketing, (2) locating participants or informants, (3) data collection, (4) transcription and data analysis, (5) coding and categorization, (6) phenomenological reduction, (7) descriptive and theoretical write-up, (8) interpretation and synthesis, (9) construction and reconstruction, (10) verification and validity, and (11) formulating the findings. The results revealed that teachers should master and be able to practice a combination of text, co-text, and context simultaneously to improve speech performance in language teaching. A text includes verbal skills, co-text includes non-textual and paratextual skills, and context includes situational, cultural, social, ideological, and situational skills. In language teaching-learning, teachers should effectively and informatively master speech performance by using appropriate texts, co-texts, and contexts. The study of speech performance in language teaching-learning offers a valuable understanding of the complexities of effective communication in an educational environment.

Abstract

This research investigated the representation of Rohingya refugees stranded in Aceh province in the Indonesian news media during the four-year crisis between 2020 and 2023. The study aimed to examine how Rohingya refugees were represented in the media during the crisis using the Critical Discourse Analysis and the Discourse Historical Approach (DHA). The research employed a mixed method analysis to analyse the corpus data of 46,769 words extracted from 62 news articles published in two mainstream Indonesian publications, namely the regional Serambi Indonesia and the national Jakarta Post, between June 24, 2020, and March 27, 2023. Using corpus linguistics and Van Dijks CDA, the research uncovered four prominent argumentation strategies used in the media to portray the refugee crisis. Serambi Indonesia and the Jakarta Post utilised the Humanitarianism and Administration argumentation the most, concentrating on precarious conditions and efforts to handle the influx of refugees. Nevertheless, the local daily Serambi Indonesia used some Threat/Danger argumentation, portraying refugees as dangers and threats to local safety. The study further reveals how the medias alignment with the government agenda is decisive for the press to construct public narratives. The narrative is expected to influence peoples attitudes and behaviours toward refugees in the province of Aceh.

Abstract

The research aimed to extract semantic fields from Arabic online news and advance Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications in understanding and managing news information effectively. It provides a comprehensive approach to processing and analyzing large volumes of Arabic news data by integrating semantic field analysis, NLP, and computational linguistics. Using quantitative methods, Arabic news articles were collected and processed with Python, a popular programming language in data analysis, and applied various NLP techniques and machine learning models to accurately extract semantic fields. The primary objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of different classification models in categorizing Arabic news and to identify the most suitable model for semantic field extraction. The research evaluated five classification models: Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting. Among these, SVM achieves the highest overall accuracy of 90%. Specifically, SVM demonstrated exceptional performance in categorizing sports-related news, with a 99% probability and an F1-Score of 98%. However, it faced challenges in categorizing health and science news, achieving a lower F1-Score of 79%. Overall, the study demonstrated the effectiveness of computational methods, particularly SVM, in classifying Arabic news and extracting semantic fields, thereby advancing NLP and computational linguistics. The findings highlighted the potential of SVM for accurate news analysis and the need for further enhancement of NLP techniques to address multilingual and domain-specific challenges.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of Themed English Teaching Materials, specifically integrating Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) within a TAGANA (short for Taruna Siaga Bencana, or Disaster Preparedness and Response Volunteer Team) theme to bolster junior high school students motivation and proficiency in English. Addressing the need for innovative educational methods in English teaching, this research fills an existing gap by developing and assessing TAGANA-themed materials that incorporate a HOTS-PBL approach. The study carefully selected 24 English teachers from Bengkulu, Indonesia, using purposive sampling to ensure diverse representation in qualifications, experience, and teaching methods. This study evaluates the materials content validity and instructional efficacy using the five-stage ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. The results show that incorporating HOTS and PBL into thematic teaching materials greatly enhances students English proficiency and motivation, especially with themes like TAGANA. Expert validation affirmed the strong content validity of the materials, and data from both the experimental and control groups demonstrated significant improvements in learning outcomes. The integration of HOTS and PBL into thematic teaching materials provides valuable insights into global educational practises. By fostering students higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills and incorporating the theme of TAGANA, this approach offers a progressive methodology for English education. This model makes significant contributions to educational practises globally.
