Studies in English Language and Education (SiELE) is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Department of English Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The journal presents research and development in the field of teaching and learning of English language, general linguistics and literature. Authors must register to this journal before submitting their work and they must follow the Author Guidelines of the journal. Submissions that do not adhere to the guidelines provided will be rejected. Please submit your article through the online submission of this journal. You may address further inquiries to the Editor at sielejournal@usk.ac.id. From 2014-2020, SiELE Journal published twice a year, in March and September. From 2021 onwards, it publishes three times a year in January, May, and September. The journals have a policy of “Zero Tolerance on Plagiarism”. Vocabulary has an important role in language learning at the college level, but in teaching practice, various obstacles are experienced by lecturers in implementing effective vocabulary learning. This study took place in Batam, Indonesia, and aims to investigate the English lecturers’ beliefs and practices in vocabulary learning; the phenomena of how they negotiate their teaching practices and what determines their choice of teaching methods when it comes to vocabulary learning. Five English lecturers from different universities were interviewed. The results of the interview were transcribed and analyzed based on the themes that appeared from data. The results showed that a requirement for practicality in class, curriculum, student atmosphere, and lecturers’ confidence in applying the right methods have effects on vocabulary learning. Lecturers have combined vocabulary learning with reading, writing, listening, and speaking in class. The main reference of a coursebook as the main guidance of the vocabulary learning varied between one class and another. All lecturers stated that they should find their own way to adopt external sources such as songs, vocabulary learning programs, and games to combine with their coursebook to beneficially meet the students’ preference. The new technology of teaching and learning is now part of classroom activities. Henceforth, this study concludes that the lecturers’ beliefs in the vocabulary learning approach are important. In practice, the lecturers need to combine them with various methods as the class situation do not always count on academic interests.

The public should be aware of the sudden change of life style of some people that makes their life completely different from their previous ones. All of us must be ready to face any circumstances from this manifestation in the future. The rich, wealthy and famous should be made aware that that type of life style is not wrong, but they should also be taught how to follow a normal way of life. Proper guidance and counselling on how to live normally needs to be provided with especially designed lectures and classes. Bringing these “students” to remote villages where the poor and the disadvantaged live may help them to understand the hardships of life around them. Having a short intern period within such a community will help them further understand the real life of the majority in their country. Furthermore, if they are always taught in an environment of luxury and are never faced with a normal education system and style of life, a major problem arises: if, in the future, our country is led by such graduates, who never went through our normal education system or lived a normal style of life, how can they understand and lead the majority in our country? This paper discusses this phenomenon.

Arranged marriages in Asia involve the consent and approval of family members. However, marriages that condone elopement are shared among the Sasak people in Lombok. The elopement entails taking away the bride from her home without knowing her parents, close relatives, or other family members. As such, events that occur after discovering the elopement are the focus of this study. Post-elopement rituals are held to assuage both sides of the families, where the Pembayun (or adat leaders) are nominated to represent the families. The Pembayun were found to be bound by sociopragmatics in their use of politeness strategies. The analysis of sociopragmatics is based on the politeness theories of Brown and Levinson (1987). A qualitative approach that involved interviews and video recordings were used to collect data from participants and non-participant observation. The study revealed that sociopragmatics play a significant role in Pembayun’s choice of politeness strategies such as social distance, power distribution, rank, situational, and cultural parameters. These factors determine the weightiness of the act and become the basis for politeness strategies in the deliverances of specific acts during the post-elopement rituals.

Flipped classroom model has received massive attention from many researchers due to its innovative instructional strategy that offers a new perspective to the traditional classroom. However, not many studies have focused on dual language learners (DLL) who face challenges in grasping second language skills and knowledge, due to the multiple linguistic systems that they have to manage. By marrying communicative language teaching (CLT) approach with flipped technique, the present study, therefore, aims to explore dual language learners’ perception towards flipped classroom model in learning English tenses as well as their learning progress using the method. The lessons were conducted using set of culturalised interactive materials. A number of 133 intermediate learners (age 18 to 25) from a vocational college in Malaysia were selected as the research participants and data were collected using one-group pre-test–post-test design, questionnaire and interview. Pre-test and post-test grammar questions were given before and after a six-week intervention program to identify the effectiveness of the materials and instruction. The findings indicated significant differences between the mean scores of the pre-test and post-test. The results also revealed learners’ positive responses and improvement in English grammar through flipped classroom and culturalised interactive materials. This research has suggested some significant impacts of flipped classroom practices using familiar objects and culturalised learning materials. Apart from acknowledging the advantages of flipped classroom model in learning English grammar, the present study also proposes some additional strategies to achieve an effective flipped classroom lesson for dual language learners in Malaysia.

The purpose of this research is to compile a teaching material in the form of critical reading modules that are effective, valid, and practical for English major students. Teaching materials developed are based on CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) learning and are oriented towards students’ critical thinking skills. CLIL not only emphasizes language skills but also on how learning content can provide a stimulus to think and understand the goals of learning. This study uses a Research and Development (RD) approach. The development model used is the ADDIE (Analyse, Design, Development, Implement, Evaluation). The results of the study show that the module that has been developed is valid, practical and effective. The validity of the module reaches a very good category based on the expert’s and validator’s evaluation. The practicability of the module is categorized as very good according to the students’ responses, observation on the implementation, and lecturer’s evaluation. The module effectivity reaches a very good category based on the students’ achievement on the tests.

Writing is a means of communication to convey meaning as well as a medium for self-expression and self assessment and also for teacher-assessment. In the tertiary context, writing even has more complex meanings because of its social context and epistemological issues of knowledge. This study was conducted to identify errors and mistakes made in free-writing by students at STKIP Bina Bangsa Getsempena and to investigate the reasons they faced numerous difficulties in producing good free-writing as well as to investigate the students’ opinions towards the activity of writing in general and also the comments of their lecturers on their free-writing assignments. 18 free-writing assignments were collected from 18 students as samples for this study. A questionnaire was also distributed to strengthen the data obtained from the writings. The written assignments were then analyzed by using the form feedback framework, in terms of conventional grammatical errors, adapted from Ashwell (2000). The findings showed 6 categories of grammar that were often misused in the students’ free-writing, namely agreement/verb-tense, spelling, articles/determiners/plurals, lexical choice, pronoun and preposition/collocation. The results from the questionnaires revealed that the main obstacles faced by the students in producing free-writing were their lack of ideas/difficulties in organizing ideas as well as their problems with grammar.

Stance-marking of interaction is considered an important element for achieving effective communication in any academic discourse. Based on a descriptive-analytic approach, the present study addresses a two-fold objective: a) analyzing and comparing stance-marking of interaction across disciplines in the research articles written by Arab non-native speakers of English, and b) describing how researchers’ lack of using interactional linguistic markers in their research articles would constrain readers from interacting with the arguments and opinions they expressed in their academic articles. The corpus data comprised forty research articles selected randomly from two disciplines: sciences (ten engineering and ten medicine) and humanities (ten education and ten applied linguistics). The findings of the study showed an evident lack of stance-marking in research articles written in English by Arab researchers. A total of 307 occurrences of lack of stance markers were detected in the study corpus. Arab non-native researchers’ deficiency in employing stance markers in their research articles is likely to be attributed to their lack of knowledge and awareness about the effectiveness of stance-marking of interaction in academic writing. The results also show that science discipline articles have a higher frequency of lack of stance markers than humanities discipline articles. The difference between the two disciplines could be attributed to the distinctive persuasive nature of each discipline. The study concluded with some recommendations, including the inclusion of stance-marking of interaction in evaluating papers for publication and teaching academic writing to Arab non-native English postgraduate students.

The aims of this study are to find out (1) ICT (Information and Communications Technology) platform used by male and female students from Islamic universities in Indonesia, (2) their perception of using ICT, and (3) their barriers to using ICT in English language learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data was collected from an online questionnaire (Google Form) from students majoring in English from seven Islamic universities in Indonesia. There were 30 male students and 30 female students from every university who participated in this research, making a total of 210 student respondents. The data were analyzed quantitatively by using the SPSS computer program. First of all, female students used more various types of ICT platforms compared to male students. Second, the female students viewed ICT use more positively than male students in language learning. And lastly, even though the females deemed ICT more optimistically compared to male students, nevertheless the females encountered more barriers in using the ICT platforms compared to the male students in this study. Again, even though male students were more skillful in ICT literacy than female students, female students constructively regarded ICT use in language learning as more beneficial to them in terms of skill, knowledge, and motivational improvement.

The development of religious characters and local wisdom in an English textbook is an effort to develop students’ English competence without ignoring their religious values and culture in English communication. The purpose of this current study is to design an EFL teaching textbook based on religious characters and local wisdom that can be appropriately used for Islamic higher education at Universitas Islam Negeri Imam Bonjol Padang, Indonesia. Research and Development type was used to design the textbook in four stages, namely, need analysis, designing textbook, try-out, and textbook revision. The observation, questionnaires, and interviews were used to collect the data. The findings revealed that textbook development resulted in eight chapters with the various themes of religious characters and local wisdom. Each chapter consists of English skills including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. The results of the textbook validations from four English language experts and learners revealed that the score was 3.53 (88.5%) within the interval of 1 to 4 and it is sorted out into a ‘strongly agree’ category. The textbook based on religious characters and local wisdom provides the students with particular challenges to respond or communicate while exploring their local cultures and practices. To find out the effectiveness of that textbook, it is recommended that an experimental study should be conducted by future researchers.

Self-efficacy is one of the often-underestimated factors, which in fact, has an influence in determining human action. This study aims to find out the correlation between self-efficacy and the TOEFL performance of the students in two universities in Banda Aceh, namely Syiah Kuala University and Serambi Mekkah University. This study employed the correlational design to find out the correlation between the two main variables (self-efficacy and TOEFL performance). The sampling technique used in this study was the stratified sampling method with a total sample of 200 university students, both English, and Non-English majors. Furthermore, to collect the data, two instruments were used, namely the self-efficacy questionnaire and the TOEFL test. In analyzing the data, Pearson’s Correlation was used to find out the correlation. The result shows that there is a positive and low correlation between university students’ self-efficacy and their TOEFL performance (r=.249). Despite the correlation is low, self-efficacy is still considered to contribute to the TOEFL score. Therefore, it is suggested that TOEFL instructors consider the variable of self-efficacy in their teaching. Furthermore, it is expected that future research continues this study by enlarging the sample size in different levels of education and in different areas.
