Abstract

A commuter marriage is a phenomenon in which a married couple maintains a long-distance relationship due to work demands, thereby facing emotional, relational, and practical consequences. Despite these pressures, some couples are able to maintain the resilience of their marriage. This study aims to understand the experiences of couples in commuter marriages as they navigate marital resilience, as well as how they interpret and practice patience and gratitude in maintaining that resilience. This study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design to explore the life experiences of couples in commuter marriages. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and in-depth interviews with 25 informants selected through purposive sampling, and were subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. The results indicate that, first, couples in commuter marriages maintain marital resilience through commitment, communication, trust, and social support. Second, patience and gratitude are interpreted as spiritual attitudes manifested in acceptance of God’s will, emotional regulation, prayer, drawing closer to God, and behaviors that nurture the relationship. These two values support the maintenance of marital resilience as a foundation of strength, a practice of worship, a mechanism for satisfaction and acceptance, and a spiritual protective factor.

Abstract

Research on educational leadership has largely been dominated by managerial and organizational perspectives, while the contribution of classical Muslim scholars to the development of Islamic educational leadership theory remains underexplored. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of educational leadership in Ibn Jama'ah's thought, reconstruct the educational leadership model embedded in his ideas, and examine its relevance to contemporary educational leadership theory and practice. This study employed a qualitative library research approach. Primary data were obtained from Tadzkirat al-Sāmi‘ wa al-Mutakallim fī Adab al-‘Ālim wa al-Muta‘allim, while secondary data were collected from relevant books and scholarly articles. Data were analyzed using content analysis through data reduction, categorization, interpretation, and conceptual synthesis. The findings reveal that, according to Ibn Jama'ah, teachers function as educational leaders responsible for fostering students' intellectual, moral, spiritual, and social development. The study reconstructs an educational leadership model consisting of three integrated dimensions: leadership based on adab and exemplary conduct, instructional leadership and intellectual development, and educational leadership for character development. This study contributes to the field of educational leadership by extending the concept of instructional leadership through the integration of ethical leadership, moral leadership, and the Islamic concept of murabbi into a holistic value-based model of Islamic educational leadership.

Abstract

This article examines Qiyās as a controversial style of Islamic legal reasoning through a thorough comparison of the ideas of the Shāfiʿī school and the Ẓāhirīs and its consequences for contemporary jurisprudence. It is based on the major usūl al‑fiqh sources and modern legal theory. It argues that the Shāfiʿī school’s conception of Qiyās is a systematic extension of textual rulings, based on a carefully defined ʿillah and a hierarchically ordered set of evidences, providing a systematic but flexible framework in dealing with new cases. Conversely, the categorical rejection of Qiyās by the Ẓāhirī school demonstrates a purposeful commitment to textual literalism, valuing certainty of scripture meaning over analogical extension, and considerably confining the scope of legal innovation. The primary findings are that these different views towards Qiyās lead to different models of legal rationality. The Shāfiʿī school's model includes reason within the limits of revelation, whereas the Ẓāhirī model restricts reasoning to the express phrasing of the texts. The contribution of this study to scholarship is twofold: it clarifies the conceptual trade-offs between doctrinal fidelity and normative adaptability; and it offers a theoretically informed bridge between classical usūl al-fiqh and the contemporary conversation on legal analogy, norm extension, and the responsiveness of Islamic law to the challenges of new issues.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the lexical meanings of the Qur’ānic terms khauf and khasyyah in the Arabic lexicographical tradition, examine their usage in Qur’ānic verses through the perspective of Tafsir Bayānī, and identify their similarities and differences through a comparative semantic analysis. This research employs a library research method using a semantic approach and the perspective of Tafsir Bayānī. The primary data consist of Qur’ānic verses containing the terms khauf and khasyyah, along with their interpretations in selected Qur’ānic commentaries, while the secondary data are drawn from Arabic lexicographical works and relevant scholarly literature. The data were analyzed using a descriptive-comparative method to explore the lexical meanings, contextual meanings, and semantic relationships of the two terms. The findings indicate that khauf refers to fear arising as a response to threats, punishment, or undesirable consequences, whereas khasyyah denotes fear rooted in knowledge, reverence, and awareness of Allah's greatness. The Tafsir Bayānī analysis demonstrates that the Qur’ān employs these two terms deliberately in accordance with their respective semantic contexts. Although both are commonly translated as "fear," khauf and khasyyah are not absolute synonyms and therefore cannot be used interchangeably in every Qur’ānic context. These findings highlight the precision of the Qur’ān's lexical choices as one of the manifestations of its linguistic inimitability.

Abstract

This study examines al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar’s methodology in presenting and evaluating hadiths deemed defective due to discrepancies in transmission (ikhtilāf al-riwāyah) in al-Iṣābah fī Tamyīz al-Ṣaḥābah, analyzing his critical judgments in light of established principles of hadith criticism. Although al-Iṣābah is primarily a biographical dictionary of the Companions and those mistakenly regarded as such, it contains more than one thousand hadiths identified by Ibn Ḥajar as defective. In this respect, the work deserves recognition as an important source in the science of ʿIlal al-Ḥadīth, although this aspect has received little scholarly attention. This study explores Ibn Ḥajar’s methodology in presenting hadiths affected by narratorial discrepancies, identifying their hidden defects, and preferring one narration over another. It also assesses his mastery of the science of ʿilal and the extent to which his methodology corresponds to that of the leading early hadith critics. The research employs a descriptive-analytical approach supported by an inductive examination of relevant hadith materials in al-Iṣābah. Selected narrations are analyzed according to established principles of hadith criticism, with attention to Ibn Ḥajar’s critical observations and judgments. The findings show that Ibn Ḥajar was a leading authority in the science of ʿilal and hadith criticism, that al-Iṣābah should be regarded as an important source for the study of hidden defects in hadith, and that his methodology closely resembles that of early critics such as Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, Abū Ḥātim, and al-Dāraquṭnī.
