Abstract

Arabic language learning using classical methods is part of the tradition of studying kitab kuning through sorogan and bandongan. This method preserves the integrity of the chain of knowledge transmission from teacher to santri. The challenges of modernization demand more adaptive and efficient methods; however, the classical approach remains superior in maintaining the depth of textual understanding and the validity of knowledge. This study aims to analyze the implementation of classical Arabic learning methods in understanding kitab kuning at Pondok Pesantren Assalafiyah Purworejo, identify supporting and inhibiting factors, and examine the urgency and relevance of these methods in the contemporary era. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical model based on field study. The results show that learning is carried out through a complementary combination of sorogan and bandongan, where sorogan emphasizes the readiness and responsibility of santri, while bandongan provides a basic understanding collectively. The continuity of the method is supported by the authority of the kiai, a structured learning environment, and the readiness of santri, but is constrained by limited time, the quality of instructors, and differences in santri ability. The urgency of this method lies in its ability to maintain the accuracy of text comprehension as well as the continuity of the pesantren’s scholarly tradition.

Abstract

Maharah Istima’ is the basis for Arabic language learning, but school practices are still conventional and have not been integrated with neurolinguistics and digital learning. This study develops an integrative model to optimize listening skills in 21st-century Islamic schools. This research is a conceptual study with a qualitative approach through library research. Data are sourced from relevant scientific literature and analyzed using thematic synthesis to formulate a systematic and applicable integrative model. The results of the study indicate that the development of effective Maharah Istima’ must integrate the stimulation of attention, working memory, and emotions as explained in neurolinguistic theory, with interactive multimedia strategies that align with the principles of Richard E. Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, Robert M. Gagné’s systematic learning framework through Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction, and Alan Baddeley’s Working Memory concept. The formulated integrative model includes the stages of sound recognition, contextual meaning, digital-based interactive reinforcement, and reflective evaluation. This integration enables learning that is more adaptive, interactive, and aligned with students’ cognitive architecture. This research contributes by developing an integrative conceptual framework based on neurolinguistics and digital learning as a practical guide for Arabic language teachers. This model bridges theory and practice and serves as a foundation for further empirical research that is more relevant to 21st-century needs.

Abstract

This study examines ecological subjectivity in Qāsim Ḥaddād’s poems through Lawrence Buell’s ecocritical framework. This study is driven by the escalating global ecological crisis rooted in anthropocentrism, a paradigm that positions nature merely as an object of human exploitation. This research aims to reveal how Ḥaddād reconstructs the relationship between humans and nature through the affirmation of nature’s subjectivity, while simultaneously deconstructing the anthropocentric worldview. Employing a descriptive-qualitative method with an ecocritical approach, the study analyzes representations of nature in four poems through four major categories of ecological subjectivity: agency, communication, volition, and ecological morality. The findings demonstrate that Ḥaddād represents nature not as a passive background, but as an active subject capable of acting, communicating, expressing volition, and embodying ethical values. Trees, forests, soil, and other natural entities are portrayed through symbolic and semiotic forms of communication that challenge the hierarchical separation between humans and nature. This study contributes to the development of Buell’s ecocriticism in the context of contemporary Arabic poetry and expands discussions on ecological subjectivity and anti-anthropocentric discourse in Arabic literary studies.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze in detail the process of conducting muhadharah, its role in fostering a linguistic environment, and its impact on improving the speaking skills of students at the Al-Humairo Dormitory of the Sunan Drajat Girls’ Islamic Boarding School in Lamongan. This study found that the limited practice of Arabic communication has led to low levels of confidence and fluency in speaking among the students. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of these lectures was able to create a participatory, contextual, and adaptive learning environment, thereby gradually improving the students’ confidence, self-assurance, and fluency in speaking, as well as fostering the habit of actively using Arabic in daily life. The novelty of this study lies in the positioning of muhadharah as a structured pedagogical strategy for fostering a language-rich environment, rather than merely an extracurricular activity; thus, this study contributes to environment-based Arabic language learning in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of Arabic writing skills (maharah kitabah) among students, characterised by errors in letter formation and word linking, as well as low participation in writing activities. The aim of this study is to analyse the relationship between students’ interest in learning and their Arabic writing skills, and to identify the strength of the relationship between these two variables. The study employed a quantitative approach of a correlational nature. The study population consisted of 40 Year 8 students at MTs An-Nur Hangtuah Kampar, Riau, with a sample of 39 students. Data were collected via a learning interest questionnaire and a writing skills test, then analysed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation test with the aid of SPSS. The results of the study indicate that students’ learning interest falls into the ‘good’ category (mean = 77.21), whilst writing skills fall into the ‘low’ category (mean = 55.26). The correlation test yielded a value of r = 0.065 with a significance level of 0.695 (p > 0.05), indicating no significant relationship. These findings suggest that writing skills are influenced not only by learning interest but also by other factors such as vocabulary mastery, language rules, practice intensity, and teaching methods.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation of media, intensifying the speed and competitiveness of online news production. In this context, news headlines are increasingly shaped by the need to remain concise, timely, and attention-grabbing, leading to various forms of lexical semantic change through processes of metaphorization, terminologization, and semantic recontextualization. This study aims to identify and analyze lexical semantic change in Arabic online news headlines within the context of digital media. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study examines 50 news headlines collected from Al Arabiya, RT Arabic, and Independent Arabia published between 2020 and 2026. The findings indicate that meaning transfer emerged as the most frequent category of lexical semantic change, followed by semantic narrowing through terminologization, while semantic extension occurred less frequently. The selected headlines from Al Arabiya demonstrate a tendency toward technocratic and economically oriented metaphorical framing, RT Arabic shows stronger evaluative and ideologically loaded metaphorical expressions, while Independent Arabia exhibits greater semantic stability through scientific and medical terminology. These findings suggest that the Covid-19 pandemic did not primarily generate entirely new lexical meanings, but rather accelerated pre-existing processes of semantic change within Arabic digital media discourse. The study contributes to Arabic lexical semantics by demonstrating how digital media reshapes lexical meaning through discursive adaptation in contemporary media environments.

Abstract

Differentiated learning is an approach that tailors learning to students' readiness, interests, and learning profiles. This study aims to analyze its implementation in improving Arabic learning outcomes at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 2 Purworejo. Using qualitative methods, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model (data reduction, presentation, and conclusion). Data validity was maintained through triangulation of sources and methods, as well as member checks and discussions with peers. The results showed that the implementation of differentiated learning at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 2 Purworejo was successful and had a positive impact on student learning outcomes. The process included diagnostic assessment, teaching plan preparation, and implementation covering four elements: content, process, product, and learning environment. The material is tailored to students' understanding, teaching methods follow learning styles, and students are free to demonstrate their understanding through various forms of assignments. The application of these strategies has increased student activity, motivation to learn, and learning outcomes in Arabic. The novelty of this research lies in the mapping of the implementation of the stages of preparation, implementation, and assessment of differentiated learning in the four maharah (istimā’, kalām, qirā’ah, kitābah). Thus, differentiated learning can be an alternative effective learning strategy to improve Arabic learning outcomes in madrasah.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the social media-based self-speaking challenge in improving the Arabic speaking skills (mahārah al-kalām) of Arabic Language Education students. The background of this research lies in the fact that speaking is often the most challenging skill, due to both limited vocabulary and low self-confidence. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through video observation, comment analysis, and in-depth interviews. The findings reveal that the self-speaking challenge enhanced students’ fluency, vocabulary variation, and sentence structure mastery. Furthermore, the strategy significantly fostered self-confidence and reduced students’ anxiety or shyness in speaking Arabic in digital public spaces. Audience comments functioned both as motivational support and as peer linguistic feedback that strengthened the learning process. The novelty of this study lies in its identification of the dual function of audience comments as both affective support and linguistic peer feedback, a dimension that has received limited attention in previous studies on social media-based Arabic language learning. The study concludes that social media can serve as a dynamic pedagogical space, rather than merely an entertainment platform, with significant contributions to the development of Arabic speaking skills.

Abstract

Media refers to all forms and channels used to deliver messages or information as a communication tool in the teaching process to transfer knowledge from teachers to students, encouraging active participation in learning. The use of the book “Durus al-Lughah al-‘Arabiyyah” Part One is considered to support the development of reading skills among eighth-grade students. This study aims to determine the effect of using this book as a learning medium on students’ reading skills before and after treatment, and to measure the extent of its effectiveness among eighth-grade “B” students at Al-Misri Islamic Junior High School, Rambipuji, Jember. This research employed a quantitative experimental within a one-group pretest-posttest design approach using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The population consisted of 104 students, while the sample included all 27 students of class VIII “B” in the 2023/2024 academic year. Data were analyzed through simple linear regression and determination coefficient testing. The simple linear regression test showed a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating a significant effect of using the book as a learning medium on reading skills. The R-Square value reached 0.897, demonstrating that the medium contributed 89.7% to the improvement of reading ability. The findings indicate a statistically significant improvement after the intervention; however, further controlled studies are needed to establish causal effectiveness.
