Abstract

Simo Bano’s The Sharia Inquiry, Religious Practice, and Muslim Family Law in Britain provides a comprehensive and thought-provoking analysis of the intersection between religious practice, legal pluralism, and family law within the British Muslim community. The book examines how Sharia councils, religious marriage practices, and British legal frameworks interact, particularly in the areas of marriage, divorce, and gender rights. Bano critically engages with the 2016 Sharia Inquiry initiated by then-Prime Minister Theresa May, led by Professor Mona Siddiqui, which investigated the misuse of Sharia law and its compatibility with domestic law in England and Wales.

Abstract

“Rules of the House: Family Law and Domestic Disputes in Colonial Korea” by Lim (2019), published by the University of California Press on November 13, 2018, provides a compelling examination of women's roles in civil courts during colonial Korea. The book focuses on the challenges women faced under Japanese family law, which was heavily influenced by patriarchal biases. Sungyun Lim, an Assistant Professor of Modern and Japanese History at the University of Colorado Boulder, argues that while Korean women struggled against patriarchal oppression, they were not passive victims. Instead, they proactively engaged with the Japanese colonial legal system to assert their rights. In turn, the Japanese used the rhetoric of progressive legal rights to further their colonial objectives. The book traces women’s civil disputes from the precolonial Choson dynasty, through the colonial era, and into the post-colonial reforms, offering a fresh perspective on Korean women’s legal struggles and their collaboration with the colonial state.

Abstract

The integration of audio-visual tools in modern classrooms has revolutionized traditional teaching methodologies, shifting from conventional chalkboard techniques to multimedia-based instruction. This study examines the impact of multimedia projectors on teaching effectiveness, student engagement, and learning outcomes compared to traditional methods. Utilizing a quantitative research design, data was collected from 500 secondary school teachers in District Kot Addu, South Pakistan, through a structured questionnaire. The analysis was conducted based on respondents' demographic characteristics to ensure a comprehensive evaluation. The findings reveal that multimedia projectors significantly enhance student engagement, comprehension, and retention of information. Teachers reported that the dynamic nature of audio-visual tools fosters an interactive learning environment, making complex concepts more accessible. However, the study also highlights challenges such as technical limitations, lack of training, and resistance to change, which hinder the seamless integration of these tools. Despite these obstacles, the research underscores the necessity of digital literacy in contemporary education, emphasizing the need for professional development programs to equip teachers with the necessary skills. Based on the findings, the study recommends targeted teacher training programs, improved access to multimedia resources, and strategic policy interventions to facilitate the adoption of technology in classrooms. By addressing these challenges, educational institutions can leverage audio-visual tools to create more engaging and effective learning experiences. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on educational technology and provides insights for policymakers, educators, and institutions aiming to enhance teaching practices in the digital era.

Abstract

Teacher performance plays a pivotal role in shaping the quality of education, as it directly influences student learning outcomes. Effective teachers demonstrate strong instructional skills, classroom management, and the ability to adapt to evolving educational needs. This study explores the impact of training and experience on teacher performance, emphasizing how professional development and hands-on practice contribute to enhanced teaching effectiveness. Through a literature review-based methodology, the study examines existing research on the correlation between training, experience, and teacher performance. Findings indicate that ongoing training equips teachers with modern pedagogical techniques and technological integration, while experience allows for improved adaptability, problem-solving, and classroom engagement. Additionally, the study highlights the role of school leadership in fostering a culture of continuous learning, ensuring that teachers receive the necessary support for professional growth. The results suggest that a structured approach to teacher development, combining training initiatives with practical experience, is essential for sustaining high teaching standards and improving student achievement. Future research should further investigate the optimal balance between training and experiential learning to maximize teacher effectiveness in diverse educational settings.

Abstract

This study critically examines the discrepancies between Imam Al-Darimi and his teacher, Imam Ibn Maeen, within the framework of Hadith criticism (ʿilm al-rijāl). Addressing the misconception that classical students passively transmitted their teachers' views, the research analyzes instances where Al-Darimi contested Ibn Maeen’s evaluations of narrators in his work Al-Tarikh. Employing an inductive-analytical methodology, the authors cataloged 31 critical discrepancies out of 975 examined narrations. These instances reveal Al-Darimi’s independent scholarly rigor, particularly in modifying Ibn Maeen’s critiques (jarḥ) or validations (taʿdīl) of narrators. Key findings underscore Al-Darimi’s mastery of Hadith criticism, his nuanced balance of respect and intellectual autonomy toward his teacher, and the broader implications for understanding classical Islamic scholarship. The study concludes that critical engagement, even with revered authorities, was integral to preserving the integrity of Hadith transmission. By contextualizing these discrepancies through principles of narrator evaluation, the research contributes to debates on scholarly authority, methodological diversity, and ethical critique in early Islamic jurisprudence.

Abstract

Conveying a written idea in other languages is really a challenge, especially for students. Not only does the challenge come from the grammar of the target language, but the vocabulary also takes a big deal. These things can result in unclear ideas and failure in written communication. This research aims to find out students’ problems in English writing. The data were taken from the writing of English Literature students of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan with samples from three classes. The types of writing were varied starting from essay, formal letter, and topic-based writing. The major finding shows that the students have problems in the subject and verb agreement where they have problems in classifying the subjects and verbs in compound and complex sentences. Besides, the structure of the sentences is sometimes incorrect, especially in forming long phrases. This research is expected to be able to make more students aware of the mistakes and give some clues for the teachers or lecturers related to some problems faced by students in composing a piece of writing.
