Abstract

Stunting remains a major health concern in low- and middle-income countries, including Indonesia, where complementary feeding practices are strongly influenced by culture, maternal knowledge, and environmental support. Local wisdom offers a culturally relevant approach for improving child nutrition and preventing stunting. This study aims to explore mothers’ experiences in preparing complementary foods using local wisdom and to analyze these practices through the Health Promotion Model. The researchers applied a qualitative phenomenological approach with ten mothers of undernourished children aged 6–24 months in coastal Banyuwangi. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using the Colaizzi method, guided by Health Promotion Model constructs. The analysis revealed five themes: cultural beliefs in food choices, maternal knowledge of nutrition, use of local ingredients, external support from health workers, and sustained maternal engagement in complementary feeding. The findings highlight that complementary feeding grounded in local wisdom can potentially support stunting prevention. Thus, strengthening maternal self-efficacy, addressing barriers, and enhancing social support are critical to improving feeding practices.

Abstract

Stunting can develop while fetus is still in womb and is only visible in infants at two years of age. Indonesia’s stunting rate reached 19.8% in 2024, which is still higher than government's target of below 14%. This study aims to identify maternal risk factors for stunting. This retrospective study applied a quantitative analysis approach. A total of 323 mothers participated in this study, and researchers used Early Detection of Low-Birth-Weight Risk Scorecard (EDBLWRSC) and Dhiana Setyorini Scorecard (DSSC) to collect data. The analyzed using Chi-square tests with an α of 0.05. The results revealed that stunting was associated with parity item of DSSC (ρ = 0.00) and a history of preeclampsia (ρ = 0.00). Meanwhile, obesity was associated with either outcome. Moreover, in EDBLWRSC, anemia was associated with stunting (ρ = 0.00), a history of low birth weight was associated with a higher incidence of low birth weight (ρ = 0.01). The maternal risk variable on DSSC and stunting (ρ = 0.00) had an OR of 2.2 and 3.3, respectively. The EDBLWRSC also revealed a relationship between maternal risk factors and stunting (ρ = 0.00). Therefore, some of maternal risk factors in DSSC and EDBLWRSC are associated with stunting.

Abstract

Self-management and the Health Belief Model (HBM) have been shown to improve blood pressure control and quality of life (QoL). However, the effectiveness of integration self-management with HBM for hypertension requires further clarification. This study examined the effect of integration self-management with HBM on blood pressure and QoL among individuals with uncontrolled hypertension. A total of 138 eligible participants were allocated into two groups: one receiving self-management integrated with HBM-based education (n = 69) and the other receiving regular education (n = 69). Independent t-tests, Chi-squared tests, and generalized estimating equation (GEE) were conducted. The findings showed a significant interaction between groups in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) after 12 weeks compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Importantly, there was a significant increase in QoL across physical, psychological, social relationships, and environmental domains. Specifically, the intervention group demonstrated significantly higher QoL scores than the control group over time (β = 22.756, 95% CI [20.623, 24.901], p < 0.001). The effectiveness of integration self-management with HBM significantly reduced blood pressure and increased QoL.

Abstract

Inadequate access to culturally sensitive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information increases adolescents’ vulnerability to misinformation, risky sexual behaviors, and underutilization of SRH services, particularly in sociocultural contexts where sexuality remains taboo. This study examines sexual and reproductive health literacy (SRHL), risky sexual behaviours and the socio-cultural and institutional factors shaping adolescent SRH experiences. A convergent parallel mixed-methods study was conducted among 994 adolescents aged 11-21 years in Pekanbaru, Indonesia (May-October 2025). Quantitative data were collected using demographic forms, a modified SRHL questionnaire, and a validated Adolescent Sexual Behavior Degree Index, while qualitative data were obtained through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with teachers, school counselors, healthcare providers, and community leaders. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and using chi-square tests, while qualitative data using Colaizzi’s thematic analysis. Most adolescents had inadequate SRHL (92.5%), and 53.3% reported high-risk sexual behaviours. No significant association was found (p = 0.083). Themes included adolescent vulnerability, limited school capacity to address complex adolescent issues; and gaps in educational strategies related to digital media influence, and cultural modernization. These findings highlight the need for culturally grounded, comprehensive SRH education and cross-sector collaboration, with nurses playing a key role in supporting informed adolescent health decision-making.
