Abstract

It cannot be hindered that needs analysis is a crucial element of English for Specific Purposes theory. Without it, effective communication in targeted domains cannot be achieved. Since ESP is linked to their field of study it presupposes that student chose to be extra curious in comprehending issues related to their domain of study or work, which should have a connection between components and English skills. This study examines students' requirements for learning English for specific purposes, encompassing their needs, preferences, and areas of deficiency, with a focus on multidimensional learning needs. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. This study employed several techniques to collect data, including conducting interviews with students enrolled in English for Business Management (ESP) courses during their second semester. The results of this research were analyzed using Hutchinson and Waters (1987) theory of needs analysis. Researchers found that students have a high need to learn English; they desire to improve their speaking skills for work, but there is a gap between their current proficiency level and what they need.   It is highly recommended for students who are planning to pursue a degree in management studies to possess an intermediate level of proficiency in the English language before starting their academic journey. Therefore, it is advisable for students in the management study program to have at least an intermediate level of English proficiency before commencing their studies. This strategy ensures their ability to address their English learning requirements effectively.

Abstract

This study employs a qualitative research design to examine the representation of masculinity in the film "Padman" through a semiotic analysis. Utilizing Barthes' semiotic framework, the research explores how denotative, connotative, and mythic elements construct the character of Lakshminkant, played by Akshay Kumar. The analysis reveals that Lakshminkant embodies a form of masculinity that diverges from traditional portrayals, emphasizing empathy, resilience, and innovation over physical strength and aggression. Visual cues such as his traditional attire and confident yet humble body language, alongside his engagement in physical labor, highlight his connection to rural roots and industrious nature. His focus on menstrual hygiene, a taboo subject in many parts of India, challenges patriarchal norms and promotes gender equality. The study finds that Lakshminkant's character redefines heroism by aligning it with perseverance, moral courage, and social innovation. This redefinition challenges hegemonic masculinity and offers a progressive model of manhood that values emotional and social intelligence. Additionally, the film's portrayal of Lakshminkant as a benevolent innovator underscores the potential of individuals to drive social change, suggesting that modernity can coexist with traditional values. Theoretical application of Barthes' semiotic framework proved effective in uncovering the layers of meaning within the film, providing a comprehensive understanding of its portrayal of masculinity. This research contributes to the discourse on gender roles in Indian cinema and highlights the importance of inclusive representations in promoting societal change.

Abstract

AbstractThe prominent role of textbooks as a learning media is frequently used by educators and learners alike to achieve specific learning objectives. By the standards set forth by the National Education Standards Agency (BSNP), books are deemed effective if they meet four criteria: content, presentation, language, and graphics. The elements identified in the study of multimodal discourse within semiotic systems: linguistic, visual, audio, gestural, and spatial modalities. The combination of two or more semiotic systems is defined as multimodal discourse; it facilitates learners' cognitive and creative development. This article explores the semiotic system potential by Anstey and Bull as textbook evaluation to meet the meaning-making in the EFL textbook, "English for Nusantara," published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. The objective of this research is to examine the concept of multimodal discourse as defined within the theoretical framework of Anstey and Bull's semiotic system theory. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative research with content analysis. The findings show that five different modes were used graded; visual 32%, gestural 23,9%, linguistics 22%, spatial 16,6%, and audio 5,4%. The textbook met the criteria for a quality educational resource, offering valuable cognitive implications for the user through its incorporation of multimodal text. It confirmed the importance of the semiotics system's potential modes in constructing meaning for both learners and educators. The meaning categorization involves: fostering the development of meaningful character traits, creating a sense of unity amidst the diversity of Pancasila, encouraging self-love, and cultivating heightened environmental awareness. Keywords: meaning-making, mode, semiotic system, textbook

Abstract

This study aims to discover the rhetorical moves used by students in the English Language Education Study Program at UNIKA Santu Paulus Ruteng when writing the introductory part of their theses, using the Create A Research Space (CARS) Model. A qualitative method was employed to describe and interpret the data. The data source for this research consisted of the introductions of ten students’ theses, collected through stratified random sampling. A checklist was used as the main instrument for data collection. In analyzing the data, the researcher followed specific steps, such as identifying sentences and expressions that indicate each move, interpreting the data, and drawing conclusions based on the results. The findings revealed that the students used various rhetorical moves in their thesis introductions. Most students applied nearly all the moves, although one thesis did not include move 2 at all. Additionally, it was found that some steps in move 2, particularly steps 2a (counter-claiming) and 2b (indicating a gap), were often skipped by the students. Step 2b was never applied in any of the theses. Keywords: Create a Research Space (CARS) Model, Rhetorical Moves, Thesis Introduction

Abstract

The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Coding-Based Learning Material (CBLM) using Scratch 3.0 in enhancing critical reading skills in a General English Program at a university language center in Bandung. With the need to develop 21st century skills, particularly critical reading skills and digital literacy, this study examines the role of CBLM in improving students engagement and reading comprehension. The research involved 12 Pre-Intermediate level students and one teacher, with participants attending 24 sessions. Data were collected through observation checklists, reading activities, and interviews with teacher to reduce bias. Analysis was conducted using thematic coding, drawing on Dual Coding Theory, which suggests that multimedia use enhances comprehension by activating both visual and verbal processing channels. Results indicate that CBLM with Scratch 3.0 positively influences students critical reading skills, enabling them to analyze and interpret text more effectively. Additionally, the interactive coding activities improved student motivation and interest in English learning. However, challenges emerged, particularly due to the novelty of Scracth 3.0 in language learning, necessitating further training and familiarization for both teachers and students. This study suggests that CBLM has potential as an engaging instructional tool for fostering critical reading skills, although future research should explore long-term impacts and strategies to support effective integration in language education.
