Abstract

The study conducted at the Practical Language Learning Center (PLLC) aimed to compare the effectiveness of two teaching methods for TOEFL preparation: the TMIP-Based Web in Teaching TOEFL method and a conventional approach or no specific intervention. A total of 58 students participated, with 25 assigned to the control class and 33 to the experimental class. TOEFL scores served as the measure of learning outcomes. Prior to analysis, Levene's test was used to assess variance equality between groups, followed by an independent samples t-test to compare mean scores. Results revealed a significant difference in mean TOEFL scores between the control (M = 66.96) and experimental (M = 81.58) groups, indicating superior performance in the experimental group. Statistical analyses, supported by SPSS output, affirmed the positive impact of the TMIP-Based Web in Teaching TOEFL method on students' TOEFL scores. The analysis of the SPSS output reveals a significant finding, where the obtained significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 is considerably less than the conventional threshold of 0.01. This result prompts the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho) and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (H1), indicating a substantial relationship between the TMIP-Based Web in Teaching TOEFL method and students' TOEFL scores. Furthermore, this conclusion is reinforced by both manual t-test analysis and SPSS assistance, both of which corroborate a statistically significant impact of the teaching method on students' TOEFL scores.

Abstract

AbstractThe aims are to analyze the culture categories and get the most dominant category presented in the textbook.  Qualitative research design, specifically content analysis of textbooks is employed in the study. The objective examination of the text data's content using a systematic coding process to identify themes or patterns is a research method known as qualitative content analysis (Hsieh and Shannon, 2005, p. 1278). The primary data source for this study is a junior high school English textbook for ninth graders called Interactive English. The researcher employs established categories to analyze the data, including food and drink, locations, art, ceremonies, social behavior, beliefs and values, history, and individuals. These categories were developed by Adoskou, Moran, Dweik, and Al-Sayed in 1990, 2001, and 2015. The textual and visual data are examined based on the cultural categories of source culture, target culture, and worldwide culture. According to the findings, source cultures are shown more frequently than target and other cultures.  It appears in 6 categories, which means that there are 2 categories that do not serve the source culture, namely; belief and value and arts categories. However the source culture is not dominated in each category, but for the percentage, it is the highest percentage of all (41,7%), international culture is 36,1 %, and target culture is 22,2%. The source culture also appears to be the most prevalent category in the interactive English textbook, with a significant number of entries in numerous categories, followed by the target culture and the international culture.   Keywords: international cultural, source cultural, target cultural, international cultural

Abstract

The English language teaching in Indonesia focuses on text or genre, making applying systemic functional linguistics important in writing. However, students struggle with grammar, vocabulary, and constructing words into syntactical construction. They only focus on composing a text, leading to meaningless clauses. The writer has identified the challenge of constructing clause complexes as the research problem. The research aims to identify the types of logico-semantic relations and analyze the logico-semantic relation of clauses frequently used in descriptive texts written by 10th-grade students in middle school. The data was analyzed by classifying the clauses and identifying the logico-semantic relations proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). According to the data analysis, the descriptive text contains logico-semantic relations of clauses such as expansion (elaboration, extension, and enhancement) and projection (idea). Expanding of elaboration and extension in parataxis is most commonly used in the text, accounting for 11% of the total occurrence. However, the text still requires improvement regarding making clause complexes and using conjunctions correctly.

Abstract

Sociolinguistic is an interdisciplinary field of science that studies language in relation to the use of that language in society. The process of communication in which two languages used together by the speakers, sociolinguistics experts call it code mixing. Code-mixing is the use of two or more languages to interact with speakers in situations that require mixing the code. This research aims to discover the types and reasons of code-mixing used in the Gita Savitri YouTube channel. In this study, the writer used qualitative research design in the descriptive form. The results reveal 164 data of code-mixing. The first video, with the title ”Jadi Kaum Open-Minded,” with a total of 92 data, contains intra sentential and intra-lexical code mixing; the second video, with the title “Pengen Jago Bahasa Inggris,” with a total 44 data code mixing, contains intra sentential and intra lexical code mixing. The last video the titled “Memahami Tone Policing: Taktik Membungkam Suara Yang Terpingirkan,” a total of 28 data containing intra-sentential and intra-lexical code mixing. The writer found the reasons for code mixing: talking about a particular topic, repetition used to clarify, and being emphatic about something in three videos. In summary, findings indicate that the three videos on Gita Savitri’s YouTube channel have a lot of code-mixing for viewers to know this phenomenon with the most significant number being in the video with the title “Jadi Kaum Open-Minded”.Keywords: analysis, code mixing, types of code mixing, reasons for code mixing
