Abstract

Each student has a unique set of learning needs, learning styles, and background of knowledge, concerns have been expressed about differentiated instruction. Differentiated instruction is a teaching strategy that modifies lessons to meet the needs of each individual student, improving learning and motivation. Traditional instruction frequently fails to meet the requirement for struggling and advanced learners because it tent to focus on ordinary students.  Using the framework proposed by Thomlinson (2014), this study evaluates the potential use of the textbook English on Sky to assist differentiated instruction as evidenced by the occurrence of differentiated instruction elements: content, process and product contained in the textbook. This descriptive qualitative study collected data through a three-type categorization of differentiated instruction from Thomlinson (2014) and an interview conducted to an English teacher using the textbook. The findings reveal that the textbook does not support any differentiated instruction content, process and product. The teacher also has adequate understanding about DI. The study leads to the conclusion that English on Sky does not have potential to assist differentiated instruction considering that the book was not written for an emancipated curriculum. To accommodate different students' interests and learning styles, it is recommended that teachers switch to textbooks that offer differentiated instruction in terms of content, process, and product.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aimed to find out whether the integrated KWL (Know-Want-Learn) strategy with Think Pair Share improves students' reading comprehension better than the Original KWL Strategy. This research employed a quantitative method. The study was conducted with first-grade students at SMPN 14 Bandar Lampung. Two classes were used: an experimental class, which was taught using the integrated KWL and Think Pair Share strategy, and a control class, which was taught using the original KWL strategy. The results of the post-test showed that the control group had a mean score of 70.32, whereas the experimental group had a higher mean score of 79.35. The t-test results for the post-test indicated a Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.003 (< 0.05), there is a statistically significant difference between the two groups after the treatment. The experimental group achieved better improvement in reading comprehension compared to the control group. These findings suggest that integrating the KWL strategy and Think Pair Share improves students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether the integrated Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) with Peer Assisted Learning Strategy (PALS) improves students' reading comprehension better than the Original DRTA. This research employed a quantitative method. The study was conducted with the first-grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Bandar Lampung. Two classes were used: an experimental class, which was taught using the integrated DRTA with PALS, and a control class, which was taught using the original DRTA. The results of the post-test showed that the control group had a mean score of 80.51, whereas the experimental group had a higher mean score of 83.94. The t-test results for the post-test indicated a Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.049 (< 0.05), there is a statistically significant difference between the two groups after the treatment. The experimental group achieved better improvement in students’ reading comprehension compared to the control group. Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of integrating the Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy with Wordwall as a game-based learning in improving students’ reading comprehension. A quantitative approach with a cluster random sampling was used. The research was grounded in the constructivist theory of language learning, which emphasized active involvement and contextualization in text understanding. The subjects were two randomly selected seventh-grade classes from SMP PGRI 2 Sukadana, with one serving as the experimental group that received the integrated LRD and Wordwall treatment, and the other as the control group that used the original LRD strategy. Data were collected using pretests and posttests and were analyzed through an independent t-test. The results indicated that the experimental group made considerably greater improvements in reading comprehension scores compared to the control group. The statistical analysis showed a significance level from the 2-tailed test that was less than 0. 05 (p 0.001) and also, t-value is higher than t-table with the significance level of higher than 0.05 confirmed the effectiveness of the LRD and Wordwall integration in enhancing vocabulary mastery, student engagement, and active classroom participation. These results supported the incorporation of interactive learning tools as a complement to original strategies in English language instruction. Keywords: Game-based learning, Listen-Read-Discuss, Wordwall, reading comprehension, vocabulary

Abstract

Writing proficiency is a crucial skill in language learning, yet many students struggled with structuring their ideas coherently. While various strategies had been explored to enhance writing skills, limited research had examined the integration of collaborative learning and visual aids, such as picture series, in small group discussions. This study investigated the effectiveness of scaffolded small group discussions and picture series in improving students' writing performance compared to the original small group discussion. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the study involved two groups of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 9 Bandar Lampung, with a pre-test and post-test administered to measure improvements. The quantitative data, analyzed using an Independent-Sample t-test in SPSS, revealed a significant improvement in students’ writing performance, particularly in rhetorical structure. The findings suggested that integrating scaffolded small group discussions with picture series provided a structured and collaborative learning environment that enhanced students' ability to organize their ideas coherently. This study contributed to the growing body of research on effective writing instruction and underscored the importance of collaborative and visual learning techniques in improving writing skills.

Abstract

This study investigates how task complexity affects students’ speaking performance based on their English proficiency levels. It was conducted at SMA N 9 Bandar Lampung in the 2024/2025 academic year with 31 eleventh-grade students, divided into low (n = 16) and high (n = 15) proficiency groups. Each student completed a simple and a complex speaking task. The tasks were based on task-based language teaching (TBLT) and aligned with the curriculum. Using Two-Way ANOVA, the results showed that both task complexity and proficiency level significantly influenced speaking performance (p<0.05). High proficiency students outperformed low proficiency students in all aspects: complexity (M = 3.85 vs. 2.97), accuracy (M = 4.12 vs. 3.21), and fluency (M = 4.08 vs. 3.05). A significant interaction was also found, meaning task complexity affected students differently depending on their proficiency. This study shows that speaking tasks should be adjusted to students’ proficiency levels to improve learning outcomes.
