Abstract

This study explores teachers' perceptions of using FluentU, a video-based language learning application, to enhance students' pronunciation skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. Recognizing that pronunciation plays a crucial role in communicative competence; the research addresses the gap in studies focusing specifically on digital platforms like FluentU. The study used a qualitative phenomenological design to gather data from eight secondary school teachers in Medan through closed-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that teachers generally hold positive perceptions of FluentU, with an average score of 31.65 and a percentage score of 79.125%, categorizing the effectiveness of application as "Good." Teachers noted FluentU's strengths in enhancing student motivation, suprasegmental pronunciation (intonation, rhythm), and phoneme recognition. However, they expressed reservations about using FluentU as the primary tool for pronunciation instruction, citing the need for more interactive feedback and advanced segmental practice. The study concludes that while FluentU is a valuable supplementary resource for improving pronunciation, a blended learning approach may be optimal. These insights contribute to the growing field of digital-assisted language learning, highlighting the potential of interactive multimedia tools in EFL pronunciation teaching.

Abstract

This study investigates English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ perceptions of the teaching styles of native English speaking teacher (NESTs). Using a qualitative phenomenological method, the study investigated students' experiences, preferences, and concerns while learning from native English-speaking lecturer. Data were gathered through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 28 fifth-year English language students at a university in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The findings demonstrate that, in general, students have various positive perceptions regarding native speaker teacher, particularly their participatory teaching techniques, structured assignments, effective classroom management, and strong communication abilities. Furthermore, students enjoy the affective qualities of teaching, such as passion, empathy, and drive, which help to create a positive learning environment. However, some students had difficulties due to cultural differences and a linguistic barrier. This study highlights the significance of communicative and learner-centered learning strategies in foreign language acquisition.  The findings suggest that pairing NEST teacher with non-native English teachers can result in a more balanced and effective language learning experience.  Although this study produced useful insights, its scope was confined to a single college, indicating the need for a larger study that covers other universities and varied language learning contexts.  Future research should look at the long-term impacts of NNEST training and ways for bridging cultural and language gaps in the English classroom.

Abstract

The TOEFL test is one of the graduation requirements at Universitas Syedza Saintika (UNSYKA), with a minimum score of 400 required for all study programs. However, some students have not yet been able to achieve this score. Preliminary research indicates that students in the Health Information Management Study Program at UNSYKA face difficulties in completing the Structure and Written Expression section of the TOEFL test. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the challenges students encounter, particularly from the material aspect. This research employs a descriptive method, with fifth-semester students from the Health Information Management Study Program in the 2021/2022 academic year as research subjects. Data were collected using two instruments: the researcher as the primary instrument and the Structure and Written Expression section of the TOEFL test. The findings revealed that 70.37% of students failed to achieve the university’s required minimum score of 400. Additionally, among the three sections of the TOEFL test, Structure and Written Expression proved to be the most challenging, with 44% of students obtaining the lowest scores in this section. Furthermore, among the eight material indicators tested, Inversion was found to be the most difficult, with a difficulty rate of 85.19%. Conjunctions ranked as the second most difficult indicator (80.22%), followed by Clauses and Phrases (64.07%). Basic Grammar Terminology was in fourth place (60.11%), followed by Expressions of Quantity (57.67%). Basic Sentence Patterns ranked sixth (57.02%). Abstract

The nursing profession in Indonesia is rapidly developing, with an increasing demand for skilled nurses who can provide high-quality patient care. As the healthcare industry becomes increasingly globalized, the ability to communicate effectively in English is becoming an essential skill for nurses. However, existing English language teaching materials for nursing do not adequately prepare nursing students and practicing nurses to face the challenges they will encounter in the global healthcare environment. To address this gap, it is necessary to develop new teaching materials specifically tailored to the needs of Indonesian nurses. Therefore, it is crucial to explore the English language needs for professional nurses in developing future English for nursing curricula and teaching materials that align with the demands of the workforce. This research has high urgency and novelty because it involves nursing students at University X in West Jakarta, Indonesia, and professional nurses who work using English as a medium, thereby connecting global needs with campus learning. The involvement of these professional nurses contributes to authentic English language input in the nursing context. Qualitative research using semi-structured interviews and questionnaires with open-ended questions will be used to collect data. The research results have implications for the development of teaching materials, curricula, and campus learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze middle school students' perceptions of using the Lemon8 application to enhance their English vocabulary mastery. Using a qualitative method with a case study approach, this research involved ten students who had used Lemon8 for one month. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using thematic analysis based on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, which emphasizes the role of social interaction in learning. The findings indicate that 80% of students found Lemon8 engaging, 70% considered the application effective in improving vocabulary, and 80% stated that it was easily accessible. However, several challenges were identified, such as its content being more focused on entertainment rather than education and the lack of practice and evaluation features to measure students’ vocabulary development. Additionally, technical challenges such as unstable internet connectivity and limited access to devices were also observed in this study. These findings suggest that Lemon8 has potential as an interactive learning tool to support English vocabulary mastery, but further development is needed to optimize its effectiveness in formal educational settings.

Abstract

Despite nationwide challenges in English language acquisition, students in geographically isolated regions like Bengkalis Island, Indonesia, face unique obstacles. Drawing upon the theoretical framework that posits the unique challenges of English teaching and learning in rural areas, this qualitative study delves into the specific challenges encountered by first-year students (n=537) at Politeknik Negeri Bengkalis, all of whom completed high school on the island. Through semi-structured interviews, the study explores these challenges and reveals common struggles with grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, similar to urban students. However, the influence of teacher competence and mother tongue interference emerge as potentially distinct challenges in this rural context. Understanding these unique obstacles can inform targeted interventions to enhance English language learning outcomes for students in isolated regions of Indonesia.

Abstract

Technological advancements significantly affect language learning making it more effective and accessible. The research aims to investigate students' perceptions on the use of the Padlet application in learning writing skills. The research used a qualitative case study approach method, involving 8th grade students of junior high schools in Medan. Data were collected using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, for questionnaires involving 31 students and interviews involving 5 students who had completed the questionnaires. Participants were selected using the purposive sampling method. The percentage results from the questionnaire provided insight into students' perceptions, the interviews added to the understanding of students' learning experiences in using Padlet. The results showed that most students gave positive perceptions of Padlet as a learning media tool to improve students' writing skills, namely, ease of access and usability, effectiveness in improving writing skills, motivation in improving writing skills, and challenges in using the Padlet application. Therefore, Padlet application is recommended as an effective writing learning media tool used in the classroom. However, it is suggested that further research can involve a larger number of participants so as to gain a more comprehensive insight into students' perceptions of using Padlet, further researchers can also focus more on other language skills.
